The Battle of Maldon took place on 11th August 991 and the events of the battle were immortalised by the Old English poem. Byrhtnoth, the Ealdorman of Essex, died during the battle, and his statue can be seen in Promenade Park. http://ow.ly/ZhgR30llQwX
