Ever wondered what screening programmes the NHS offers? Imperial College medical students Mary Kelada and Sachini Ranasinghe have designed an infographic that explains the NHS screening programmes available for females in England. Screening plays an essential role in detecting diseases early, allowing treatment to start before the complications of a disease become more established.

Well done to everyone who completed their A-levels and gained a university place in 2018. Don't forget to get your Meningitis ACWY vaccine and make sure you are up to date with your MMR and other vaccines before you start your university course.

Vaccines do work. Polio is a potentially serious illness that can cause paralysis and death. The introduction of the polio vaccine in 1956 has led to the eradication of polio in England and Wales, saving many live and preventing patients from suffering the complications of polio. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-4456059 0

People travelling to Russia for the World Cup this summer should ensure they are up-to-date with their MMR immunisation to minimise the risk of contracting measles. Many European countries - including Russia - are experiencing outbreaks of measles.

England is currently experiencing an outbreak of measles, with around 440 laboratory confirmed cases between January to May 2018. The outbreak is linked to ongoing outbreaks in Europe. Most cases are unimmunised teenagers and young adults. Children and young adults who did not receive MMR vaccine when they were younger, and people from under-vaccinated communities, are particularly at high risk.
Measles is a highly infectious illness that can sometimes cause serious complica...tions such as pneumonia and encephalitis, and which can occasionally be fatal. Anyone who missed out on their Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine or is unsure if they had 2 doses should therefore ensure they are fully immunised.
The outbreak also reinforces the importance of parents to ensure their children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, the first at around 12 months of age and the second around 3-4 years of age.

We are very pleased to report that one of our GPs, Dr Azeem Majeed, won the 2017 Lambeth CCG Award for Outstanding Contribution to Primary Care. Dr Majeed joined Dr Curran and Partners in 1999. Dr Majeed is also Professor of Primary Care and Head of the Department of Primary Care & Public Health at Imperial College London. Lambeth CCG noted that Dr Majeed has made a huge contribution to primary care research knowledge as well as provide high quality kind care to his patients. Dr Majeed was recognised recently in Pulse magazine as one of the 50 most influential GPs in the UK.

We were very pleased to learn that one of our GPs, Dr Azeem Majeed, was selected by the professional GP magazine Pulse as one the UK's 50 most influential GPs. Pulse commented that Dr Majeed was nominated by GP colleagues for making ‘huge contributions’ to general practice and public health, and being a ‘champion for GP recruitment’. Dr Majeed was noted to be ‘hugely influential’ because he is ‘a voice of reason’ speaking ‘in the language of evidence’. http://www.pulsetoday.co.uk/…/-dr-azeem -ma…/20035048.article

Dr Majeed wrote recently in the British Medical Journal about the implications of shortages of GPs in the NHS in England. Some points from the editorial: 1. The Department of Health has underestimated the scale of GP shortages in England. 2. There are not enough GPs working in the NHS to continue to provide services in the way we do now. 3. Link funding for clinical services more closely to NHS activity. 4. Transfer some of the work done by GPs to other health professionals. 5. Reduce the amount of administrative work done by GPs. 6. Remove barriers to the recruitment and retention of GPs, for example, by addressing indemnity costs and improving the provision of childcare. http://www.bmj.com/content/358/bmj.j3191< br>
