Marble Hill House

About Marble Hill House

A day out at Marble Hill is a real treat as this beautiful Palladian villa is set in 66 acres of outstanding riverside parkland near Richmond in West London.

Marble Hill was built for the remarkable Henrietta Howard, mistress of King George II when he was Prince of Wales, and friend and confidante of some of the cleverest men in England. The house and gardens were intended as an Arcadian retreat from crowded 18th-century London. Its grand interiors have been exquisitely restored and recreated and include a fine collection of early Georgian paintings. There can be few places in England which better recall the atmosphere of fashionable Georgian life.

When tea was first in vogue it was so popular that servants often helped themselves to this expensive luxury. The solution? Tea allowances for all servants. That was just one fascinating fact from our old fashioned afternoon tea for seniors. Thanks to all to came along for tea in vintage china, cakes and a talk on the history of tea.

We decided to visit Marble Hill House for a Saturday afternoon outing as it was just a short train ride for us. The House is 10 minutes walk from St. Margaret's station and is set within a 66 acre park which, when we visited, was quite busy with locals walking their dogs. Marble Hill House was built between 1724 and 1729 as a home and artistic salon to Henrietta Howard, who became the mistress of the Prince of Wales, later George II.

Access was by guided tour on weekends only, although there are plans to extend this in the future. Our guide, a pleasant Dutch woman called Saskia, gave a lengthy and interesting talk about the history of the house and showed us around the three floors and dozen or so rooms. The tour lasted about 75 minutes, but became a little rushed at the end in order to accommodate the next group.

The house is currently run by English Heritage, who are slowly restoring it to its former glory with the addition of period paintings furniture and furnishings. Unfortunately, because many of the items are on loan from other establishments, no interior photography is allowed.

We had about 12 people in our tour, which was maybe a little too many, as the delays moving between the rooms probably accounted for the rushed ending. I do not think that it is a suitable tour for children (there were two on our tour) as they would quickly become bored and irritable. It would also be respectful if you listen to the guide rather than conduct your own competing conversation, as some of our tour chose to do - very annoying!

In the grounds of the house there is a simple, but pleasant cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, and their rhubarb tart was quite delicious.
