As well as being able to refer you to specialist centres should your pet need it, we can also provide the services of visiting vet specialists in-house.
So, no need to travel to a referral centre - be seen by a clinical expert at your local surgery (consultation/test fees will apply).

Friday Fun - what do you reckon the cat is thinking in this image?!

We offer free puppy or kitten checks with our nurses - it helps get them used to coming into the surgery with all the different sights, textures, and smells.
Great for discussing flea and worming, neutering, dietary and training advice.
Plus, we love any excuse for a cuddle! It works well as part of their socialisation and getting them used to being handled too.
... These clinics are only suitable for healthy puppies and kittens. If they are showing any signs of illness, a vet appointment will be required.

We are looking for a motivated RVN to come and join our fantastic nursing team. You will be joining our growing team located in a beautiful part of Essex within easy reach of London, Cambridge and Stansted Airport. You will be primarily based at our new Bocking surgery but may have to provide some cover at our other 2 branches in Stansted and Dunmow, or at our Saffron Walden veterinary hospital.
We provide our own in house emergency cover which is run by our dedicated night t...eam. We encourage a healthy work life balance, and are looking for a part time nurse to cover either 2 or 3 days a week with no OOH or weekends.
The ideal candidate will have good all round experience and work well independently. This is a truly hands on position where you will get to utilise your nursing skills, whether it be running your own clinics or providing high levels of care.
CPD is funded and encouraged. Accommodation may be available if required. Pay will be dependent on experience.

We have been customers of Mercer and Hughes for over 30 years with a number of different pets. They have always provided excellent care for our animals and given us as owners, honest information and support where needed. I highly recommend anyone to this Veterinary practise.



Tonight we completed our stage 2 puppy pre school with our new Puppy Digby. It was a fun and informative 2 weeks. Vet nurse Carolyn gave great advise and tips and made us all feel welcome and comfortable with her calm approach. It was a great social activity for both Digby to meet other pups and for us to meet other friendly owners and compare notes. The behind the scenes tour of the lovely modern surgery in Great Dunmow allowed you to see where your pets are cared for once out of the consulting rooms. Would love to do more training events with Carolyn and Mercer & Hughes if the opportunity came up. Highly recommend the Puppy pre school.

We had puppy socialisation classes with our little Cockerpoo Reuben a couple of months ago now (sadly it wouldn't let me post a review on here sooner!!!) Carolyn was amazing, so much patience and was able to answer any questions we threw at her!!! (There were a lot as we are first time puppy parents!!!) highly recommend going, it was also lovely to meet the other pups and their owners too! Was a really lovely group! Thank you.

We always had very good service with them. Very kind to our cats (and to us too) :-D

Very professional yet compassionate staff. Wouldn't consider anyone else since we've met staff at both Great Dunmow and Saffron Walden.

This evening was our 2nd and final puppy class for Bryn our Border Collie puppy, given by vet nurse Carolyn. Really enjoyed the classes. It was nice meeting other puppy owners going through the same things as yourself and seeing the different breeds of puppies. Big and small. Carolyn was there to give advice and answer our questions. She obviously loves animals and made a great fuss of each puppy, making us owners very proud of our fur babies! I would definitely recommend the classes. We each came away with a brilliant goodie bag and certificate too! Thank you Carolyn and reception staff.

Thank you to everyone who looked after billy bunny over the last week. Sadly had put to sleep tonight but the vets were great with all the treatment and care they gave him. Best vets in saffron Walden. Very understanding vets. And lovely how they brought tissues to us.Thank you from the Mccorkell family x

Thank you so much for your kind sensitivity and thoughts both in the surgery just before Christmas and after receiving a bereavement card today. Sorry I can't name the vet who dealt with our cat as cannot remember her name but she was excellent and the supporting vet nurse also as thoughtful and caring too.

Thank you so much for looking after Watson, he loves coming to see you all, he gets such a warm friendly welcome that doesn't even realise he is at the Vets.

Our puppy attended the recent Mercer and Hughes puppy party. It was absolutely fantastic, not only great fun for the puppies to play together but also Jackie was extremely informative and so lovely. We will miss this on Thursday nights going forward. We highly recommend all new puppy owners to attend!

M&H Dunmow is a fantastic vets. Thank you so much for all your support with Reggie, from when we initially saw the vet (on all of reggies visits), brought him in for his op (the nurse whos name I dont know sorry, but she will know who she is was absolutly fantastic, made me feel like she really cared for my pet and that he was in safe hands, and then when we brought him back showed that she really does care, and was sad with us.) and for the very thoughtful card we recieved yesteraday. You were all amazing when we lost Reggie and made the process so much easier. It means a lot to have a vet you can trust. Thank you again, Clare and Scott

Just completed our puppy preschool with Storm Trooper it was very useful and full of good ideas and factual bits about puppies ie feeding , training , worming , teeth cleaning etc ,lots of other useful bits of information .. Definitely recommend if you have a new puppy.

I like the staff and super efficient service. The only problem is that there is no e-mail address or messaging option :). Could I ask a question here?

I cannot write in words how supportive Lucy at Stagnated has been whilst having to deal with saying goodbye to our cat Tash - very supportive, professional and caring. Excellent.

Ant and I want to publicly thank the nurses and Ilse at SW M&H for their kindness on 31st June when our wonderful 13.5 year old Swiss Shepherd (Boomer) died. They brought us tea and tissues, helped us with gentleness and patience, and completely understood that we needed time and space to deal with what had happened. Thank you all.

What excellent service. I called for a vet to come out to my horse on a non urgent visit and he was here within a couple of hours. My horse was thoroughly checked over and blood tested,urine sample checked and results phoned to me all on the same day. It doesn't get much better than that!!!!! Thanks very much (Mr Flood)

Just enjoyed a very informative couple of evenings at the Puppy pre-school in Dunmow. There was lots of information on puppy care, (teeth, claws, parasites etc!) in a friendly environment which provided safe socialization for the puppies. We got treated to a "Behind the Scenes" guided tour too!

We came away with lots of tips and ideas about future health care and training and it was lovely to meet other enthusiastic puppy owners!

For £10 it was excellent value. The puppy party bag containing a "Shake a Pheasant" was a real hit! Thanks Carolyn for giving up your 2 evenings to teach us.
