About Merlin'S Cave

The home of premium d’rinking and d’ining in the heart of Chalfont St Giles.

Located opposite the village green and with a garden that nestles between the River Misbourne and the Parish church, you will be hard-pushed to find a better location to relax, unwind with friends or colleagues during the week, or a weekend treat with those close to you.

With an all-fresh-food restaurant (captained by Head Chef Peter who has cooked for royalty in his previous life); and a uniquely-designed bar (serving hand-crafted beers and Mission wines from New Zealand), we are always here for you.

We don't really know why Merlin's Cave is our name. It might be that John Milton once drank in this 17th century beer house and named us after a local landmark, or that there is magic and mystery in this old building and its open fires, chalk, candle wax, oak and ochre. Either way, Nick and the team look forward to welcoming you to our very own "Paradise Found"!

Today’s dreamy specials... 🌤

We had been out for a walk in the rain, and needed a nice lunch before driving back home. We were made welcome and our waitress Olivia was very attentive. Our meal was tasty and filling, and dessert was a yummy bonus.

Next time we are in Chalfont St Giles we will definitely pop in again.

User

Very cool place to visit. Be prepared to step in water all worth it.

User

Really lovely dinner to celebrate one of our daughters birthday. Service was great and so friendly and warm, food delicious and atmosphere buzzy. The Merlins has really upped their game and we love going there. So lucky to have a good pub/restaurant on our doorstep again.

User

Pre-booked a table for a mixed aged family group of 10 @ 19:00 which was a must as the restaurant itself soon became rather bizzy & I should of imagined that others had pre-booked too... as for the restaurant itself .... amazing as soon as you walk through the door...with lots of quirky decor that catches the eye... (brill).. the staff were accommodating too, to the top level..& pleasing . All orders taken (even all food on the menu could be half portions for the littlens) & served with no complications & no rush to vacate .Compliments to the chef's as the food was/is the tops...we will be back for sure... thanks to all for a fab accommodating dine experience.

User

Popped in for a quick lunch with my sister and nephew despite not having a booking. The staff couldn't do enough to welcome us and our waitress Amber was so cheery and polite - she waited patiently whilst my nephew dictated his demands and she did it all with a smile! Great food and lovely surroundings!

User

Our waitress was brilliant and the food was tasty, but the kitchen let down the experience a bit.

All credit to the manager who very quickly fixed the problem and sent out a round of Champagne to make up for the error.

Shame that the kitchen's 'attitude' tarnished what would otherwise have been a 5* experience, however, we won't let that stop us from coming again.

EDIT: I have changed some of this post and put this up to a 5* from my original 4* as the manager once again showed exceptional service by responding to this post in the way he did. Turned a negative into a positive! I look forward to enjoying the same great service when we come again.

My husband took me and my family here for my birthday, although my husband and son had been on a previous occasion it was the first time they had been back since it has been refurbished. We were all so impressed with the service as well as the food, it was hot and fresh, we weren't kept waiting, the member of staff who served us constantly kept checking that we had everything we needed and we didn't feel rushed, I can't recommend Merlins Cave highly enough and can't wait to go back again soon.

User

Like the pub bit over priced for wine food a bit cold but nice some staff could do with some more experience. It wasn't busy but ad to wait long time but would come again.

User

I was presently surprised at the quality of the food it was very very nice and the Tamsyn was a lovely hostess whilst we enjoyed our meal. Great food great service and love the new look too. Best pub/restaurant I've been to in ages!! 5*

User

Great food, excellent service and friendly staff. 5 from me.

User

Celebrated 3 Birthdays last night. Great food and perfect service from Vil overall was our first visit and we were all impressed and will return again. PS amazing Chips best I have ever had.

User

Absolutely lovely food. There was a bit of wait as it was very busy but absolutely worth it. Will most definitely recommend to others. Thank you for the great table service too!

We were away during the opening week and popped in for a drink and a nose around on Monday evening. Firstly the decor is, in my opinion, simply amazing. An eclectic and unusual mix that you'd never think to include in the same environment but it works very well. Having had a lovely couple of glasses of wine in the bat area we decided to stay for an evening meal. Sadly this is where it needs a little improvement. Our chips were warm and limp and the crumbles were served cold in the middle. This just should not happen - it wasn't very busy that evening and there's little excuse. However the staff were charming and attentive and in fairness the crumbles were replaced immediately with new piping hot puddings and the cost deducted from the bill. Hopefully these are just teething problems that will improve in the near future and it hasn't put us off going back again. This place has huge potential and will undoubtedly become an asset to the village. I look forward to being able to give it a five star rating!!!!

My family had booked for Sunday lunch today (11th Feb 2018) and travelled from South London to meet my daughter. We managed to get there way too early for our allotted lunch spot. I anticipated a long wait but was told, our table was ready as soon as we'd like it and no problem with us being early.

The manager was excellent - any person that gives me a sample of ales on sale is a good un, in my book - and was friendly and welcoming.

The food was lovely, we opted for the roast lunches, all served with veg and a massive Yorkshire pud. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of cauliflower cheese with a roast, but I enjoyed the portion I had with my meal.

The food could've been a few degrees hotter, but it was perfectly acceptable.

There was a good choice of desserts on offer; which were well received by us all - I opted for the cheeseboard, which had a blue, a brie and a cheddar; all of which were of a decent size and quality, accompanied by a pleasant chutney, two small bunches of grapes and crackers - with the promise of more should I want them. I'm a little fussy, when it comes to my cheeseboards and so I was very pleased with the quality and presentation of this one!

Our waitress was friendly and smiley and didn't rush us or pressure us to order.

The drinks aren't cheap but an overall bill of a shade under £120 for four of us, isn't outrageous.

All in all, I would recommend a visit, it was a pleasure to see all the staff seemingly happy in their work and having time to natter with customers whilst taking their orders.

We will return!

User

Great food.

Had to go and find a dessert menu oursrelves and place the order at the bar as the waitress seemed to disapear after our main course.

User

Food was great but service was slow & it took 3 attempts at getting the right measure of wine for 1 diner - would definitely like to try it again to see if was just a one-off but am not local and was visiting my sister who lives in the village.

User

The food was good but the service was very slow and we had to ask for assistance every time we wanted drinks or to order. Initially sat at the table for 25 minutes before we got to order first drinks and ask for menus. There were 10 of us and after two bottles of wine we were told it has run out - for such a big group it would have been professional to have checked that from ordering.

User

My Husband & I had lunch here last week, we enjoyed it, so after a day out with our Son & Grandaughters age 3 & 5 we thought we would return again for lunch later in the week. We asked for the kids Menu & told they don't do a kids Menu but they could do an Adult serve for half price. We got a serve of fish & chips for the 5 year old.....Fortunately she wouldn't eat it because I had the fish & chips, in two mouthfuls of the fish I had 6 bones......thank God my Grandaughter didn't eat hers.

Don't think we'll come back, as not kid friendly!!!

User

After all the effort to make the place such a nice and interesting venue it is totally let down by the food. Went there last night with my 18 year old daughter, we had to send her chicken meal back and my steak was rubbish, must add I did not complain about my steak. Place is cold because they have not got the right heating out the back, food is over priced and despite best efforts it does not feel as though anyone is genuinely attentive to you. Didn't tip and that is so very rare for me. Sort it out, get a decent menu and motivated staff or sell it to me.
