Migration Museum

About Migration Museum

We're creating a Migration Museum for Britain, exploring how the movement of people to and from the UK across the ages has shaped us - as individuals and as a nation. The Migration Museum at The Workshop is now closed. Opening in Lewisham in Feb 2020

Migration Museum Description

We are creating a national Migration Museum for Britain, a permanent visitor attraction that goes to the heart of who we are, where we came from and where we are going – as
individuals, as communities, and as a nation.

Since 2013, the Migration Museum has offered a programme of exhibitions, events and education workshops exploring the central role that migration has played in shaping who we are today.

From February 14 2020, we'll be staging exhibitions,
events and education workshops from our new venue in the heart of Lewisham Shopping Centre.

Hi, our website is currently offline due to technical difficulties. We are working to fix it and hope to be back online soon. In the meantime, our Facebook pages are still active and our museum will be open to the public as usual from 11am–5pm tomorrow (Wednesday 1 August). Many apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Join us and Historic England for a joint free late opening exploring themes of memorialisation.
Historic England is launching an exhibition, Immortalised, which explores the ways people and events have been commemorated in England, by the statues, the plaques, shrines and murals that mark heroic, quirky, inspirational and challenging lives. The themes of memorialisation, commemoration and representation are reflected in the Migration Museum’s current exhibition No Turning Ba...ck: Seven Migration Moments that Changed Britain. The exhibition examines seven moments throughout history that have had a major impact on the movement of people to and from these shores through art, photography, personal objects and stories.
As well as an opportunity to view both exhibitions and chat to the Migration Museum and Historic England teams, visitors will have the chance to:
Participate in a special guided tour of the Migration Museum’s No Turning Back (tour timings to be confirmed closer to the event).
Take part in a curator-led guided tour of the Immortalised exhibition (tour timings to be confirmed closer to the event).
Chat to a ‘Pop-up Prof’ about the themes of memorialisation and commemoration explored in both exhibitions. ‘Pop up Profs’ is a series run by the Migration Museum where leading academics are on hand to have an informal chat about exhibition themes over a drink or a cuppa. No advance booking is required
Participate in a ‘making’ workshop, in which visitors can create their own memorial using craft materials supplied.
Grab a drink from the Migration Museum’s donation bar

Reminder: Special Late Opening tomorrow evening, featuring a display of drawings by Sophie Herxheimer. Join us for a drink, chat and look around our exhibitions!

Proud to be cheering on the #ThreeLions tonight! 6 of the England football team's semi-final starting line-up are 1st- or 2nd-generation immigrants. Without them, we’d be down to just 5 men. And if you trace back the family histories of every England player, you'll find migration stories. Good luck lads! #ENGCRO #Itscominghome

Please note that we will be closed tomorrow, 11 July, for a private event.

Join us and artist Sophie Herxheimer on Thursday 26 July for a special late opening celebrating her Neighbourhood of Stories display at the Migration Museum at The Workshop.
Neighbourhood of Stories is a selection of drawings by Sophie Herxheimer made live using ink and brush in collaboration with members of the public, listening to and drawing stories about food, home, and the journeys we make to get there.
Each story drawing takes about 10-15 minutes to make, and the narrat...or remains present and engaged during its realisation. Once the ink is dry the narrator is given a same size photocopy of the drawing to take away. Sometimes the process is intense and cathartic and sometimes more mundane, but every story is addressed with the same search for a synthesis between voice and experience, image and text. A search that has tipped Herxheimer further into her own poetry, as well as her own wonderful city.
Sophie will be talking about the project and the drawings on display.
Attendees will also have the chance to view our No Turning Back: Seven Migration Moments that Changed Britain exhibition, grab a drink and chat with members of the Migration Museum team.
Please invite family, friends and colleagues who may be interested – we look forward to seeing you.
A selection of drawings from Neighbourhood of Stories is on display in the entrance corridor and along the balcony outside the Migration Museum at The Workshop from Thursday 5 July until Sunday 2 September.

A Polaroid for a Refugee is a project depicting points of transition in the lives of individual refugees. We hosted a display of images from the project at the Migration Museum in June. In case you missed it, check out this guest blog by photographer Giovanna Del Sarto featuring images and stories.

Not the most hi-tech exhibition - probably due to its temporary location - but really interesting. Instead of just listing historical immigration, it isn't afraid of dealing with contemporary issues. Difficult stuff to talk about but our in-house guide was amazing!

My friend and I were particularly affected by the origami boat installation and the word 'neighbour' amid mothers, sons, sisters and friends. Also loved seeing the 'jungle books' library tent - such a hope-filled space! Thank you for providing this opportunity to come and hear individuals stories of migration. Love the map - has inspired me to learn more about my own migration history. Thanks for the invitation @[511435380:Anthea]!

Fantastic small museum. Deserves to be a permanent fixture in London and could easily be ten times the size! I particularly liked reading the personal stories and questions that visitors has left behind. Well worth the visit.

Fantastic museum!! Really friendly and knowledgeable staff.. wouldn’t hesitate to recommend! Such an important subject to be documented and discussed!

Fantastic exhibition that invites migration contributions from visitors to add to the story of what makes London such a great place
