Missing People Description
The charityŌĆÖs mission is to offer a lifeline to missing people and their families left behind, and publicity plays a big part in that. We have more than 170, 000 followers on social media, and we share missing appeals via these channels every day.
We work quickly to get publicity out because we know that public awareness helps find people who are missing and make them safe. It gives hope to the family that something is being done. Members of the public reacting to the publicity and calling our helpline with information about sightings helps us, and the police, find missing people.
Sometimes members of the public contact us on social media asking us to retweet or share missing appeals that we have not originated. We cannot act on these requests immediately because:
1. We have to check that the appeal is genuine and not a hoax (there have been cases of this in the past).
2. We have to check with both the police and family members of that missing person that itŌĆÖs safe to proceed with publicity. Sometimes there may be reasons why doing publicity would be wrong and worse, publicity may put already vulnerable people at more risk eg someone fleeing years of domestic violence might see a newspaper appeal for themselves and feel driven ŌĆśundergroundŌĆÖ.
3. We have to consider the situation of the missing person. We aim that if someone saw publicity of themselves theyŌĆÖd feel able to contact us in confidence for help. We consider how they would feel ŌĆō reading about themselves. We also consider how hard it could be for someone who has been missing to then ŌĆśwalk back into their lifeŌĆÖ, knowing that publicity about them has been distributed throughout the local area or been featured in the national media. We donŌĆÖt want to make it any harder.

ItŌĆÖs imperative that the public trusts what we say and that means we publish only what we know to be true, not what we believe to be true. We need to make sure that any publicity; posters, media appeals, tweets, will help someone to safety. Trust in the organisation is dependent on getting this right.

ŌĆ£Going missing is a red flag moment. It is a warning sign of crisis in someoneŌĆÖs life that should trigger support. Vulnerable people should not just be found and forgotten. The evidence is that the police are firefighting this problem almost single handed. But this is a not predominantly a police problem, it is a health problem and mental health services need to step up before more lives are lost."

Kevin Ainley went missing in June 2004 while working and living in the Playa de las Americas area of the Spanish island of Tenerife. Kevin, who had previously lived in Fleetwood and Wakefield in the UK, was 24 years old at the time of his disappearance.

An amazing charity who do so much for so many people. I dread to think where I'd be right without the love and support of the staff, volunteers and other famies I've met through events.
The outcome of my experience of missing was always going to be what it was but the hope and support was and continues to be unwavering.
We're often asked would you recommend "XYZ" to a friend and in the case of missing people it's a Yes! (& have have already done so on numerous occasions) - keep up the good work!
