Visiting this weekend? The main entrance is closed while we give the terracotta facade some TLC. Notice that the tiles inside and out include design elements drawn from natural history. The eastern side shows extinct species, while the western displays living zoological species.
But there is an exception. The coelacanth fish (pictured, top), can be found on the east side in the Minerals gallery. It was thought to be extinct until one was found in 1938.

Sir Richard Owen, first Superintendent of the Museum, was born #OTD in 1804.
Nobody knew what a dinosaur was until he grouped together three prehistoric reptiles with a collection of features in common and coined a term to describe them in 1842. ¤”¢

Alfred Waterhouse, born #OTD in 1830, was the architect who designed the Museum using a mix of Gothic Revival and twelfth-century Romanesque-style architecture, in line with Museum founder Sir Richard OwenŌĆÖs vision of creating a ŌĆścathedral to natureŌĆÖ.

User

Did you know the MuseumŌĆÖs architect Alfred Waterhouse used terracotta for the building as it was more resistant to Victorian LondonŌĆÖs harsh climate?
To keep the Museum looking as good as it did when it opened in 1881, the Cromwell Road entrance will be closed 19-26 July while we give our facade some TLC.

We had an amazing time up in London last week, the main reason for our visit was to enjoy the Natural History Museum and it did not disappoint!

Loved the roaring, moving T.Rex.

We got there around 9:30am and didnŌĆÖt have to wait long to get in, the afternoon queue was a much longer wait.

I also want to thank the online shop from the bottom of my heart for sending my son the T.Rex chomper as his broke the day after buying it. We received it in the post today. One happy son xxx

User

The Venom exhibition was really interesting, at the very least I learned the difference between venom and poison!

If you visited every day for a year you wouldn't run out of areas of interest

User

Such the uniquest thing I have ever seen. Subjects and stuff was incredible! No cost, everything for free, super service... I'm loving it.

User

Simply fantastic!

Yes we queued for 40 mins to get in at 2pm on a Saturday (which tbh I thought was good), myself, my mother and my two sons LOVED it.

Ran to the dinosaur exhibit, and was taken aback at how amazing it was. One of the best places in the uk.

Would go back tomorrow if we could.

Definitely returning!!

User

My daughter and I visited specifically to see the "Life in the Dark" exhibition. We really enjoyed the layout and enjoyed the multi-sensory exhibits, except the smell of bat guano!

Very informative and imaginatively presented. Thanks to all involved!

User

Loved this museum. We took our 3 year old today as we wanted to show her the dinosaur section. We thought she might have been too young. The dinosaur section was a great hit and we loved the bird section too. We spent so long looking at these two sections we will have to return to see the rest. I cannot recommend taking little kids to this wonderful museum enough

User

Just got back from the Dinosnore sleep over event. Absolutely loved it, the staff were amazing, the activities we're great.... Just a fantastic experience.....can't recommend it enough....

User

ItŌĆÖs just an amazing place to visit and for nothing what more do you want

User

I took the kids and my grand kids and we all had a great time....so much to see and do...we spent approximately 5hours inside but the time went really quickly.....All I can say is if you want somewhere to go with the kids the Natural History Museum is the place.... we will definately go back as we didnt see everything...kids can't wait neither can I.

User

I been yesterday with my toddler and was amazing! The stegosaurous in the entrance was fantastic to him! But we didn't see the big one only the whale! At the end was a nice "historic" experience.

User

Great day out, had to queue to get in for 45 mins but so worth it. Still my favourite museum.

User

First time visiting this brilliant place. .what a wonderful day out. ..food very reasonable in price. ..staff helpful and friendly. .would highly recommend visiting. .

User

Brilliant, staff were great, very informative. They clearly enjoy the job. My kids both loved it. We were there for around 3 hrs and did not get around it all. Definitely looking to go back and see the rest.

User

Another amazing visit yesterday and had a wonderful time seeing all of the beautiful butterflies- this is one of my most favourite places to visit when coming to London. ItŌĆÖs the first place I go every time before seeing other attractions.

User

Absolutely loved! First time for my 3yr old! Couldn't get her out of museum... And guys who was doing building dinosaurs was THE best! And on every corner is helpful staff who makes sure u didn't miss a thing and makes it like not 1754 time asked or answered question! 5 stars to staff

User

A great place to visit not been in sometime ideal family day out. Lots to see and do will take grandchildren next time. Can't believe it's still free entry.

User

Had a wonderful day there with my 11 and 9 year old daughters. Queue was an hour long so went and bought tickets for the Butterflies which gave us a fast track pass - definitely worth it! Impressive to see all the animals and skeletons. The Human biology section was a bit tired looking probably from lots of little hands pressing buttons. Was impressed with the minerals section, who knew that rocks could be so fascinating! My daughters loved the escalator going through the middle of the earth into the red zone. Would recommend to anyone.

User

Amazing building fantastic exhibits - not a 5 down to the fact that thereŌĆÖs too much single use plastic in the restaurants they need to sort that issue out disappointing they havenŌĆÖt resolved this yet

User

ItŌĆÖs a good place to be but needs to be more organised as you get lost from one place to the other. It should be sequenced where you can run through all the area seamlessly. Other then that a beautiful place to visit and me and my wife Monika Shahab had a lovely day. On the side note please install more air conditioning unit it was so suffocating inside and we couldnŌĆÖt breath most of the time.
