Newington Green Meeting House: Revolutionary Ideas Since 1708 Description
New Unity, a non-religious church in north London, has received initial funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a major project to renovate its historic building on Newington Green. The project will also include a programme of events and activities for adults, families and schools to discover the fascinating stories of people connected with the church.
Founded in 1708, the Newington Green building is one of England’s oldest Unitarian churches, with a 300-year history of radical social reform. Today, New Unity is proud to champion the continuing spirit of dissent, activism, freedom and equality.
From July 2017 to March 2018 we'll be running some pilot events to find out how people would like to engage with the building and its stories. These will include music performances, comedy evenings, talks and lectures.
These events will explore some of the fascinating stories of figures associated with the building, including Mary Wollstonecraft, the ‘Mother’ of contemporary feminism; the Rev Richard Price, an intellectual radical who campaigned for civil rights; and Benjamin Franklin, one of the USA's Founding Fathers.
