August Gardening Jobs August is the month that you can really reap the rewards of all your hard work throughout the season. Your crops are all nearing harvest, your lawn is lush and your plants are looking fantastic. If we have the long summer that we all dream of, you cannot water your garden enough. Water twice daily to keep up with your plants needs, use a soaker hose or sprinkler to help. If you've only got time to water once, it is best done in the evening so less water ...is lost to evaporation, it will also prevent the leaves scorching. In addition, make sure that you're keeping up with feeds so your plants get the right nutrients they need. Harvest It's harvest time all over your garden, everything from potatoes through to plums are all ready to pick. That's not to say that fruits will not keep coming, continue using a high potash feed to get the most from your crops. Harvest your crops regularly to create room and nutrients for new crops. Leaving mature crops on your plants can prevent late crops. Take a look at our jam recipe if you find you've got too much fruit! Pests You may not be the only thing enjoying you garden a this time of year, slugs and bugs will all feast on your garden. Most pests can be treated with all round pesticide such as Provado 1L (£4.99), however vine weevils and slugs require specific pesticides. If you're creating an organic garden then traditional pesticides may not be an option for you. Solabiol Rose Bug Killer 1L (£6.49) can be used on most plants and is certified organic by Organic Farmers & Growers. It has 100% natural ingredients and boasts a 97% recycled bottle. Holiday Time It's also holiday time for a lot of gardeners, but don't forget about your gardens that you've work so hard for all year. Scheurich Copa (£4.99) and Bordy (£5.99) are watering cones that will keep your plants watered whilst you are away. Hozelock have water systems that are simple to set up and with a timer (starting from £33.99) you can go on your holidays worry free. For those, who love their tech as much as their garden, the Hozelock Cloud Controller (Oaktree's Price £134.99 RRP £194.99) is a must have! You can control your garden watering from anywhere in the world with a simple app. Create your own watering schedules, with reminders of local weather reports so you can adapt to any weather from anywhere.

Dealing With Pests During the summer months, you will find that your garden will become over-run with bugs and pests if you don't keep on top of them. As with all chemicals, follow the specific instructions detailed on the product. Your garden is home to all sorts of creepy crawlies. Some will not do any harm to your plants, however others will devastate your flower beds almost overnight! Use Provado 1L (£4.99) to conquer the most common bugs including Lily Beetle, Caterpil...lars, Black Fly and many more. It is safe to be used on fruit and vegetables and with regular use, will also prevent further attacks. Resolva Bug Killer 1L (£4.99) will control over 17 pests and even prevents Pea Moth and Carrot Fly when applied at the right time. You might find that your plants in pots are wilting for now reason, despite watering and feeding them. Vine Weevils will be munching their way through the roots of your prized plants. Tip plants out of their pots and look for 'C' shaped creamy maggots amongst the roots. You will need to use Bug Clear Vine Weevil Killer 480ml (£7.79). Although specifically developed for roses, Rose Clear Ultra 1L (£6.49) can be used on most plants in the garden. As well as controlling aphids, it also contains a fungicide to fight blackspot, powdery mildew and rust. Resolva's Rose 3 in 1(£4.99) offers similar action against aphids, rust and blackspot. For the organic approach there is Solabiol's Rose Bug Killer 1L (£6.49). Using naturally occurring active ingredients, it protects against aphids and scale and it is safe to use on houseplants and ornamental garden plants. It is also certified for organic use by the Organic Farmer's and Growers. Slugs. The biggest problem that all gardeners will face. They will damage your plants and crops and leave a slimy trail of destruction behind them. At Oaktree Garden Centre we have an extensive range of slug killers and repellents. Eraza 800g (£6.49) uses ingredients so that it is shower proof making it the longest lasting. However it cannot be used around pets or children as it is very poisonous. Slug Clear Ultra 685g (£6.49) is similar to Eraza, you will need to reapply after rain fall. Slug Clear Ultra can be used around fruits and vegetables, however you must ensure that you thoroughly wash your crops before eating. Unfortunately, there isn't a slug killer currently on the market that is safe to use around children and pets. Slug Stop 3kg (£4.99) creates a natural barrier around plants and is suitable for organic growing. Whilst not killing the slugs, it will feel like they are walking over Lego and will prevent them trying again. Slug Gone 1L (£2.99) is another natural barrier made from British Wool, and again makes it very difficult for slugs to move. This product is also Soil Association approved.

July Garden Jobs Getting the Best July is really about making sure that your garden is as tidy as possible ready for you to enjoy in August. Plants such as Penstemon, Hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums can all be cut back to encourage a second rush of colour and flower. This will keep your garden looking fresh as new growth comes through. The same applies for any hanging basket plants; if you cut back leggy growth it will renew your display. As with any plant, ensure that you fe...ed them well after pruning to give the new growth a kick start. Your climbers will have put on an incredible amount of growth recently and will probably have wild tendrils all over the place. Keep these in check by tying them back with some twine or wire. Dead-heading is a vital part of keeping any garden looking at its best. It will keep plants looking attractive and encourage more blooms whether in beds and borders, containers or hanging baskets. All bedding plants and perennials can be treated this way, some plants such as Sweet Peas need deadheading daily. Early planted tomato plants should be beginning to produce crops now. Ensure that they are well fed, and that any leaves under the lowest fruits are pinched out. This will allow the plant to concentrate on ripening the fruits and also to allow circulation around the plant to prevent disease. With all crops you should be regularly feeding them once a week to produce the best flavour. Look for anything with a high potash concentration such as Gro-Sure's Big Tom 1.25L (£3.99). Plant Feeding Feeding your plants will encourage steady growth throughout the season. By far the easiest method is a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro Pour & Feed 1L (£3.99); alternatively, you can use a granular or a slow release feed to achieve the same results. With all plants the most important thing is to water them regularly. If we have a particularly hot spell, you will need to water twice a day, this includes the plants in your greenhouse and your lawn. Try to avoid watering in the hottest parts of the day and stick to early morning and late evening for your plants to get the most benefit.

Wow. First visit but not the last. Travelled over from Basingstoke and so worth the time and effort. Huge selection of plants, shrubs etc. Garden furniture and barbeque selection amazing. Everything you need for the garden all under one roof (thankfully as it was raining rather heavily when we first arrived). Didn't use cafė on this visit but will next time. Cant wait to visit at Christmas.

We visited on bank holiday Monday with my two elderly parents and my one year old Grandson at around 1.30pm. We had a fabulous lunch, chicken tikka masala, bacon and egg roll, tuna salad and the most wonderful kids meal box, we were able to choose from a variety of items which made it easy as I could pick the food he likes. The highchairs are really good with a choice of two types, suitable for babies and toddlers. The staff were great, very polite service and very helpful when describing the children's food choice. I have passed this place many times but never stopped, I will be going again very soon (great post lunch shopping too)

We visited Oaktree for Santa’s Grotto with my 8 & 4 year old daughters. All I can say is they absolutely loved it and Santa was brilliant, cracking jokes (as my 4 year old has always been scared of Santa’s beard) however he put her at ease and she finally sat with him and she came away from there no longer afraid. I just want to say how brilliant the whole thing is set up from beginning to end. Thank you to all the staff for making my both my girls so very happy.

Merry Christmas

Visited yesterday for the first time. It was my birthday, and the all day breakfast was recommended by a family member. All I can say, it was a great start to the day. The food was lovely, the staff were brilliant, especially Sarah that works in the cafe... we were a bit fussy with our choices for breakfast, but noting was too much trouble for her, and she was very pleasant and friendly. Then we spent a while having a good look round the garden centre, my daughter particularly enjoyed the comfortable garden furniture and the fish.

User

The best winter wonderland / breakfast with Father Christmas experience around.

We will be back next year for more Christmas magic!

Only discovered this Garden Centre by chance when looking for Fish pond supplies early this Summer. Been numerous times since. I live a ways north of Slough and used to stick to South Bucks and Slough for fish and gardening supplies. It is proving to be well worth the extra miles travelling to visit a Garden Centre as awesome as Oaktree. Well stocked, managed, and laid out. I would almost say it was a work of art. Quite possibly the nicest store I have ever been to. Love it !

User

Oak tree is a brilliant garden centre. The choice of plants etc is endless and very reasonably priced. We visited for the first time a few weeks ago and had the cream tea for two. Excellent value for money. We visited again yesterday and had the vegetarian breakfast. Also very good value for money. Only downside for us yesterday was that we made a special trip to purchase a Christmas tree and both choices were not available. Hard to believe they have sold out and should probably be removed from display or notice attached to state this. Won't stop us from visiting again though.

User

Lovely garden center and nursery. Lots of plants, shrubs, herbs and garden pots and tools to enhance any garden. Add to this a well run, clean restaurant with a good varied menu to choose from, and really friendly, helpful staff. We will certainly be returning to this lovely place.

User

Love this Garden Centre ! Really great staff and good selection

User

Just wanted to say thank you for yet another amazingingly magical Christmas experience... everything is perfect -the decoration, the staff, the present, Father Christmas and of course the price. User

Great service and delivery staff were fantastic, Garden furniture delivered, assembled and all rubbish removed. Sales staff was also very knowledgeable

User

Fantastic visit to Oaktree to see Santa on Saturday, staff went out of their way to give my elderly Nan a present from Santa himself, it really made her day.. 3 young grandchildren really enjoyed the experience. We go every year and have always really enjoyed it

User

Fantastic trip to see santa yesterday! Brilliant value for money and so magical and believable for the kids (and mini and dad) 😂 The staff were fantastic, great set up loved it! We will be booking again next year!

User

Discovered Oaktree through recommendations for places to see Santa and it was an excellent visit. There were plenty of festive helpers in the car park and garden centre. The Santa’s grotto experience was amazing - working our way through an enchanted forest up to Mrs Christmas’ kitchen we got to decorate biscuits before going through to meet the reindeer and do some crafts before meeting Santa. He was great with our not very chatty 4 yr old and scared 2 yr old and gave them both a lovely soft teddy. I particularly loved it when an elf got down to chat to my youngest and called a reindeer over to say hello to her, so cute! The hot drink after was very welcomed in the cold weather.

The cafe is great too. You reserve your table first which is super handy with kids in tow. Yummy food and it has a lovely area tucked around the side with a Children’s play area. They have a fantastic range of Christmas decorations and trees as well.

User

Brilliant place. Excellent place. Great food and lovely staff.

Highly recommend

User

Best garden centre I've ever visited and the food in cafe is wonderful-in fact I go there just for their veggie pasties although am disappointed sometimes as they sell out of these quickly-chips are to die for. Beautiful plants -laid out in spectacular style -recently bought 2 bamboos there that were excellent price.

User

Amazing experience seeing Santa yesterday (Sun 26th Nov) and all his hard working elves, not forgetting the lovely Mrs Santa too! Super soft plush Christmas Bear given as a gift and lots of time to chat to the lovely Santa (I wanted to take him home with us lol) my two daughters and I LOVED it and would highly recommend going.
