‪This amazing photograph taken from Whitcliffe overlooking the beautiful town of Ludlow shows a new bench that commemorates the heroes that fought for, and died for, our liberty in the world wars. A truly beautiful tribute to those who will never be forgotten. ‬

https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/…/charl es-i-king-and-collec… I am delighted at finally getting to see the King Charles I and his art exhibition at the Royal Academy today! If I was a knight of the Order of the Garter, I would wear my eight-pointed star!

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0… there still time for you to bid on this lovely matching Kangxi cup and saucer. They are over 300 years old and would be a worthy addition to any collection.

And here’s my two penny worth. In my humble opinion the portrait by Peter Paul Rubens is of Horace Vere of Tilbury (1565-1635). The eyes and nose are very similar and the time frame is also spot on for when Rubens was in England. In the Apsley House portrait the sitter looks older, his beard thinner in his senior years.

‘The room itself, intended purely for receptions and specially built to entertain the Princess of Wales, is in line with the pavilions and garden houses, the tempietti and mausolea, of which Giibbs with his intensive Italian knowledge was so adept an exponent. In such erections he was freer than in other houses to exploit the more fanciful aspects of Baroque taste. We therefore have no work of his that is a more brilliant example of his ‘Italian’ and eclectic style. The brick... exterior is simple, and in-Palladian in the manner of Vanbrugh or Archer. The Domed interior, with its pedimented doors and circular recesses for “bustos”, with Corinthian pilasters and a lavish profusion of stucco by Artari and Bagutti, is a magnificent, accomplished, essentially Baroque essay in the diverting aspect of Gibbs’ wide-ranging achievement’
Bryan Little on James Gibbs at the Octagon Room at Orleans House ('The Life and Work of James Gibbs, 1682-1754', B. T. Batsford Ltd, 1955, p.51).

My dream PhD theses would be called the following:
'A comparative study of Masonic influences in the architecture, art and garden design at Lord Burlington's Chiswick House, London, and Frank Worthington Simon's Manitoba Legislative Building in Winnipeg'

http://www.rickypound.london/chiswick_hou se_masonic_jacobit… 2017 is a very special year for Freemasonry as it marks the tricentenary of the formation of English Grand Lodge in 1717. To celebrate Masonic events will be taking place across the world. As a special 'treat' for you and your lodge why not book a Masonic tour with me, Ricky Pound, of Chiswick House and Gardens? Designed by Lord Burlington in 1727, Chiswick House is a world famous piece of Palladian architecture. Th...e interior design was largely executed by William Kent, the most sought after talent of the early Georgian period. Within the rooms of Chiswick, Lord Burlington and Kent designed ceiling paintings which were full of Masonic symbolism which could be understood by fellow brothers of the Craft. Come and share the secrets of Chiswick House. I can promise you a truest enlightening and exhilarating experience!

Why did the Jacobite rebellion fail, and was it doomed from the start? What would have happened if Bonnie Prince Charlie had not turned back at Derby and marched on to London? These and other questions will be asked today at a talk by Dr Jacqueline Riding at Orleans House Gallery. For today the King shall enjoy his own again!

Last chance to see the 'Capability 300' exhibition at Richmond Museum which ends this month. The exhibition has some lovely coloured period engravings of Sion House, Garrick's Temple, Hampton Court gardens, Kew Gardens and terrific photographs of Stowe gardens, among others. I have also lent some 18th century Chinese porcelain featuring garden scenes, the type of gardens and scenes appreciated and advocated by Brown's rival and critic, William Chambers. The exhibition is well worth a view. Details below: http://www.museumofrichmond.com/

Memorial medal in commemoration of the execution by beheading of King Charles I, a figure whose death royalists compared to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. They believed him resurrected through his son, Charles II, restored as King of Great Britain 'by the grace of God' amongst scenes of triumphal restitution in 1660
