User

What could be better than on a warm early Summer day, to stroll along the banks of the canal and drink coffee and to eat delicious cakes?? We will definitely be returning if only for another slice of yummy cake

User

Went to Paper Mill Lock for lunch yesterday with family. Tearoom was really busy. Cheese and Ham toasties and cold drinks were lovely. We went on the last boat ride which was cool and breezy on the river. A very enjoyable afternoon.

User

We love coming here as a family. The food is great and the setting is tranquil.

My little boy who has just turned 3 asks me every day if we can go to paper mill lock for cake!!!

User

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable family boat trip today. The delicious cakes and tea afterwards were great!

User

Very tranquil , pretty , lovely walks either way of the papermill lock , lovely gentle river cruise on the cavelle , very reasonable price for almost an hours ride, beautiful scenery. The tea room is beautiful inside and out , lovely lunch of sandwiches with trimmings and home made cake and tea , totally reccomend it , oh and dogs allowed too xx

User

Very nice tea room and cream tea. We'll worth a visit

User

The premises are clean and the produce is all fresh, it is an ideal place to rest for tea and cake etc.

It would be nice is there was a few more Sun parasols especially when the sun is full blare.

The staff were friendly, quick and efficient, just one moan the young lady serving needs to try and smile a bit more, she reminded me of a RSM on the parade ground very firm.

User

The best Ploughmans around, cakes to die for too! Making this our regular Saturday afternoon treat after a little stroll with the dogs along the river.

User

Such a lovely tea room we did a bit of kayaking and then popped in for a lovely cuppa and a treat .great place to try out

User

Lovely place fir a chill out

User

Lovley food and grate long walks it's a must place to take the family

User

Lovely tea rooms, prices a bit high but to be expected somewhere so beautiful

User

Lovely stop after a beautiful walk in the sun! The toasties and ploughman's were lovely, we'll be back to sample some of the cakes soon 😁

User

Lovely place , good views, good walks and finish yr day off in the cafe for nice food and drinks

User

Lovely peaceful spot. Bit of a queue but when food ordered it's made really quickly. Quiche ploughman's is excellent and the carrot and banana cake is yummy .

User

Lovely location, yummy selection of gorgeous cakes and a nice stroll along the river to walk them off. (The savoury foods being served did look really good too!) A gorgeous sunny day so busy, but the service was as quick and efficient as it could be in the circumstances. Certainly worth a visit. My only thought was that as it was such a warm day, albeit fairly early in the season (weekend before Easter) it was a pity the barge couldn't have been put into action quickly or at short notice for trips up the river as I think it would have been very popular and potentially lucrative too!

User

Lovely little tea room, very scenic. We had lunch on a busy Sunday just as it started to rain so it was completely full up. We had a slight wait for our lunch but it was lovely and service very efficient even though it was busy.

User

Lovely little tea room and gorgeous cakes. Was lonely to sit out there next to the river. We didn’t leave enough time to go for a walk but looking at the other reviews that’s another reason to come back xx

User

Lovely cakes

User

Just popped in by chance as usually very busy, but it was just right being a Thursday. Had a lovely cheese ploughman’s much with loads of cheese,in fact far too much I had to take most of it home, I just wish there had been a bit more bread with so much cheese, but I really enjoyed it and wld go back for more. My son and hubby had toasties and hubby had a cream tea too. There were so many cakes to choose from too but that ploughman’s left me kicking and was just enough. Can’t wait to go again x

User

I go here quite often after a tip off from an old work colleague several years go now. A keen cyclist, I have often cycled the length of the canal from Springfield Basin to Heybridge Basin and Paper Mill Lock is the ideal halfway stop off for bite to eat and something to drink in a relaxed and beautiful setting. The service is always effcient with food arriving not long after you've sat down with your drinks. I can recommend the hearty ploughmans (my favourite), cream teas and soup. The tearooms are often frequented by dog-walkers, cyclists, ramblers and motorcyclists. On a hot, sunny day, expect the car park to be full and the roads leading up to it full with cars. Finding a seat may be challenging but the service will still be spot on. Get there early or later in the day to avoid the crowds.

User

Huge ploughmans at a reasonable price , riverboats a plenty and right next to the riverside. Luckily with Warm weather quite possibly might make this a favourite spot of mine. Wouldn’t mind cycling out this way soon.

User

Have been going here for years I love it there and find it very therapeutic when I am stressed and the food is lovely

User

Had sandwiches and cake for our lunch - ample filling in the sandwich and the cakes were amazing - all this in very picturesque surroundings (we went for a walk after our food).

Staff at the Tea Room were very friendly and helpful.

Will definitely be going again xXx

User

Good food good service

User

Fantastic afternoon, super slick efficient but family friendly service!!

Felt like we were in a family Kitchen with top quality food

User

Fab place to go. Gorgeous cream teas. Lovely walks for dogs. Easy parking and quiet a piece of England from the old days

User

Brilliant the young lady was very good and knowledgable as well worth every penny

User

A lovely little tea-rooms with sandwiches/ploughman’s/toasties/cakes etc. Such a great location by the canal and lock. Wonderful walks too. Absolutely worth a visit any time of year!

User

A hidden gem.. beautiful location.

Tea room is lovely, food was nice.

Really enjoyed our boat trip on Caffel today. It's so relaxing, and calm just watching the ducks

User

A favorite place to walk the dog and enjoy the river. Lovely views and a great tea room. Also boat trips in the better weather. Great place to unwind and get some fresh air.

User

The walks along the river are superb, sitting by the Lock watching the boats is very tranquil, the food is really good no matter what you eat, plenty of choice. My only problem is the complete lack of rubbish/waste bins, especially along the towpaths for those with dogs. Almost everyone had 'poo' bags but not a single bin to be seen. Shame really, that's the only spoiler of the day.

User

The tea room is very good. Cakes are delicious and very reasonable in price

User

Nice tea and cakes. Fabulous location br River Chelmer. Quick service. Teacups could be bigger

User

I've been there many times with my husband love the tea room, canal , walking by the canal . The food & cakes is to die for. Customers & staff are always pleasant. My only criticism is the ploughmans could do with being more chilled.

User

Had a nice hot chocolate there with my mum and dad good price very friendly staff as well.good walks for dogs as well.

User

Great place to visit, lovely cakes and a good selection of lunch foods and snacks.

Can get busy so be prepared.

User

Good food with a lovely view of the lock and boats. Can get extremely busy on sunny days. Accessible by road or by foot via the canal side footpaths from Chelmsford or Maldon. One of my favourite places to have lunch.
