Paul Churchward Tunbridge Wells Professional Guitar Tuition Description

I am currently the resident guitar tutor at The Mead School Tunbridge Wells and Langton Green Primary School Tunbridge Wells and I am fully CRB checked.
I began my one to one private tutoring business in 2001 with the goal of creating a fun, inspiring, friendly and comprehensive guitar experience tailor-made to each individuals taste and ability by a qualified passionate tutor.
My students range between the ages of six to fifty plus from beginners to advanced, covering a variety of styles from blues to jazz and rock to funk on both acoustic and electric guitars and classical to flamenco styles on nylon stringed guitar. I also teach bass guitar in which I cover similar styles.
My teaching approach is first to inspire and broaden my students music experience by introducing them to new musical styles mixed with the contemporary music they hear and experience in their own lives.
Application is a huge part of my approach and my aim is for students to have a very hands-on playing experience in my lessons. My teaching approach can be split it to five key areas:
Performance - this develops their song portfolio, introduces new techniques and helps them understand dynamics and timing.
Theory - which develops scale knowledge, chords, harmonic structures, reading music, intervals, and arpeggios etc.
Techniques - Where they push how fast and fluently they can play scales and chord progressions to a metronome therefore studying tempo and playing with a beat to improving their ability incrementally.
Creativity – This is where the students apply what they have learnt in the theory and techniques areas and study the art of improvisation.
Composition – This is similar to improvisation but the approach has more development in compositional structure and techniques like melodic development and harmonic texture awareness. We also study compositions and improvisations by other players in the last two areas as case studies for leaning and developing music appreciation.
For those students who wish to take grades I follow the R. G. T grades from the London College Of Music in Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass and Classical Guitar.
It is a goal of mine as a tutor to help bridge the gap from what students learn about music in school and what they learn in guitar lessons. It is very common for the two to seem separate and as a guitar player this can be especially common.
I aid my students in their GCSE /A level studies helping them build up their performance / composition portfolios and helping them with the theory required at those levels.
I teach from a music production studio in which I use the recording facilities to help develop the students playing and also teach music production techniques to those students who show an interest in that area.
I am here to help you realise your guitar aspirations. To create a fun learning environment in which you can become the player you want to be.
