11 March is the date for the first Budget of the new Conservative government. Whilst the media remains focused on Brexit, Chancellor Sajid Javid is expected to take full advantage of his domestic carte blanche for radical reform of taxes and public spending.
Find out what eye-catching changes the economists are predicting that might affect you in The Telegraph.

At Perrys, we are serious about being as environmentally friendly as we possibly can. Eighteen months ago we swapped our Perrys' plastic bags (used for client records) to reusable cotton bags. After learning that this may not have been the best eco-option, we really tested the market to see if we could do better.
Using the fantastic blog below by Small footprints big adventures as our guide, we researched the top four materials based on UK market availability and durabili...ty. The conclusion was our existing bags came out best for ultimate durability, keeping the environment as exceptional as our team!
We can all do more to make our planet a better place.

Does your company utilise 'off-payroll' workers? You may refer to them as freelancers, contractors or consultants, but whatever you call them, from April 2020 the law surrounding them changes. It will be down to companies who employ contractors to assess their status, rather than the workers themselves, and those companies may be liable if they get it wrong.
If you haven’t yet heard of IR35, this controversial tax rule, it’s time to start learning. We can help. Read our blog here:

A new survey of 800 landlords by Simply Business has shown the key areas where buy-to-let investment is likely to grow in 2020. 🏘️
According to the study, London and Manchester came out top as the cities where landlords expect the buy-to-let market to be most robust this year. Combined, the two cities received over a third of votes when asked which city represents the best investment opportunity.

Wondering whether property is worth investing in? Wonder no longer; a recent article from Rightmove demonstrates clear signs that the housing market is most definitely on the rise.
Some interesting tidbits are:
🏠 2.3% surge in the price of property coming to market, the largest monthly rise they have ever recorded at this time of year... 🏠 7.4% growth in number of sales agreed in the month after the General Election 🏠 High demand to get onto the housing ladder means that first-time buyers are facing all-time highs in the price of properties with two bedrooms or less

The vast majority of companies, regardless of their size, budget for at least some client or customer entertainment. These days tickets to sporting events or the occasional dinner are not unusual experiences to offer, but we are often asked if this type of expense is tax deductible.
We've written a blog about just that. Read more here:

We're sending a very loud 'Congratulations!' to Nicole Taylor, the exceptional Kent-based cross country runner, who we are proud to sponsor.
Nicole was recently awarded the Tonbridge Athletics Club's Presidents Cup, which was given in recognition of her 10 years with the club and her phenomenal success so far. To put it into perspective, last year Team GB's Tom Bosworth GB Race Walker won it!
It's yet another indication of the huge effort that she puts into her sport, and s...o we are extremely proud of her win.

On 24 January, HMRC reported that three million people had yet to complete their Self Assessment Tax Return. It is highly likely that many of those will not complete in time, and will incur penalties as a result.
In this article from The Guardian, some of the most bizarre excuses given for non-compliance are listed. Our favourite excuse for missing the deadline is 'My mother-in-law is a witch and put a curse on me'!

If you've been following us for a while you'll know that we are very much invested in trying to raise as much money as possible for local charitable causes.
Our main event of the year is the Perrys Golf Day, where teams come along for a round of golf followed by dinner, all enjoyed in the beautiful Kent countryside. Clearly it is all about raising as much money as possible and last year we achieved a fantastic total of £8,500 for Family Matters UK Charity.
If you are interested in bringing a team along to this year's event on Friday 12 June, you can find out more here: https://perrysaccountants.co.uk/charity-g olf-day

There's just one week until the deadline for completion of Self Assessment Tax Returns. 😟
Last year 750,000 individuals missed that deadline, incurring a penalty charge as a result. Don't be a 2020 statistic, get your forms filled in soon.

Christmas seems like such a distant memory, but we finished it off in style with our annual quiz competition.
We're really pleased to announce that the winner of a stunning hamper was Janine V from Bromley. Congratulations, and we very much hope you enjoy your prize!

The tax return season is well and truly here, along with a timely reminder from Which? Money of the increase in scamming activity by fraudsters posing as HMRC.
On this call you will hear an actual attempt to defraud an individual, along with advice from Which? on how to spot a dodgy call.
If you are in any doubt please remember, HMRC will never contact you spontaneously and will also never threaten you with arrest.

Not only is today Blue Monday, known as the most miserable day of the year, but it is also now termed Brew Monday, which we much prefer!
Brew Monday is an idea introduced by the Samaritans. It is a day to reach out to friends, family or colleagues who might be feeling lonely, isolated or depressed. If you know someone in this position, why not pick up the phone or drop in to see them, treat them to a cuppa and some of your time? ☕

January is not everyone's favourite month, but after the excesses of Christmas and the New Year it's good to get out, blow away the cobwebs and get some exercise. It is also Walk Your Dog Month, so what better way to rack up some cardio than a trip out with the pooch?
Here are a couple of photos of our team's dogs, two enjoying the stunning Kent countryside and another duo sheltering from Storm Brendan!

Following our recent survey about buy-to-let investments, we decided to drill down into the London property market as we have a substantial presence there, with offices in Mayfair and Threadneedle Street.
We asked Londoners why they might decide on buy-to-let as an investment tool, what their motivation was for this and the type of property they would choose. Read how they responded to these and other related questions here: https://perrysaccountants.co.uk/ne…/lon doner-view-buy-to-let

She's back!
It's been a while since we updated everyone on the progress of Nicole Taylor, an exceptional Kent-based distance runner who we are very proud to sponsor. After suffering some niggling injuries in the autumn we are delighted to confirm that she is now competing again.
Just before Christmas Nicole took part in the South of Thames 7 mile cross country event and the Sussex Championships 10km cross country course, finishing 1st lady in both. What a way to come back! She has big plans for regional and national races throughout 2020 and we will let you know how she gets on. Well done Nicole and keep on running!
