While gigging on the scene for around 18 months, London's only palindromic hard-bop sextet Jessop Jessop Jessop, are fast making a name for themselves as one of the most swinging up-and-coming bands in town. They met at music college, with the entire line-up consisting of students or ex-students at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama or The Royal Academy of Music, and since then have been playing regularly at clubs in London and other venues and festivals across the count...ry. Their repertoire is derived from the great groups of the 50s/60s Blue Note-era recordings including Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, the ensembles of Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley and Curtis Fuller to name a few. Jessop Jessop Jessop's dedication to swinging hard and each player's personal identity produces music steeped in tradition yet fresh for the modern audience. On 28th August they will once again be playing at The Pizza Express Dean Street, this time celebrating the compositions and recordings of the late, seminal composer and pianist Cedar Walton.

"The best live vocalist I’ve heard in a long time" Jamie Cullum
With over 15 years in the music industry under her belt, Annabel Williams has provided skilful backing vocals to some of the biggest names in music. Yet it was her performance at the 2013 London Jazz Festival’s Jazz Voice, at a sold-out Barbican, that saw her explode into the public consciousness as a solo artist. Her roaring renditions of Etta James’ ‘I Would Rather Go Blind’ & Chaka Khan’s ‘You’ve Got the Love’, received standing ovations and rave reviews.
Throughout her extensive career, Williams has provided backing vocals to major artists, from Al Jarreau to CeeLo Green; Nicole Scherzinger to Dame Cleo Laine and Rumer to Michael Bolton. Her rich experience and vocal stamina has caused her to become one of the most in demand vocal coaches in the country. Her celebrity artist clients have included Katy Perry, Amy Winehouse, Ellie Goulding, Stooshe and Alison Moyet.
In 2012 she became the official vocal coach for the X Factor, continuing then as official vocal coach for Britain’s Got Talent from 2013. As a solo artist, Williams can frequently be seen performing at London’s most celebrated venues, from the Hideaway to the 606 Club. She appears regularly at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, as a feature guest vocalist on the sell-out shows of both the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion and Natalie Williams’ hugely popular Soul Family Sundays; receiving standing ovations for her deeply moving, gutsy performances.

The Ali Maas and Micky Moody collaboration began in 2014 as a songwriting venture which has since evolved into the album Black & Chrome. It is more than a coincidence that one of Ali’s early influences as a singer was David Coverdale at the time when Micky was guitarist with the original Whitesnake. The results of this union, however, are not based on any form of classic rock, but more from a shared admiration of blues, soul, Americana, swampy rhythms and captivating melodies....
"A Class Act" - Blues in Britain
"Fab band with Ali Maas leading a great groovy set of blues and soul" - UK Bob (Radio WRFG Atlanta USA )
Aside from his well-documented time with Whitesnake, Micky was also a member of Juicy Lucy, Snafu, Frankie Miller’s Full House, Roger Chapman and the Shortlist, The Moody Marsden Band, The Company of Snakes, M3 and Snakecharmer. He has also been a very active session musician, author and creator of library music.
Ali has always specialized in writing original material with thought provoking lyrics and inventive melodies. After an initial period of studio work, and live session singing, she progressed onto the indie rock scene as lead singer and writer for the critically acclaimed band McQueen. During this time, Ali also developed her skills as an artist and currently runs her own one-woman enterprise, making mixed media artwork and leather work for the interior design industry. Her first love is, and always has been, music. Black & Chrome is now on worldwide released.

The Filthy Six are the most exciting, authentic Soul Jazz outfit in the UK today and have established themselves as one of the most electric live acts on the scene. Their soaring horns, blistering guitar and gut-wrenching Hammond are fuelled by one of the hardest grooving rhythm sections around, producing a hip-shakingly powerful mixture of jazz, funk and boogaloo totally in keeping with the finest traditions of the Blue Note sound.
"Impressive Soul Jazz sounds... A groove mo...nster!" - Craig Charles (Funk & Soul Show BBC 6Music)
“Vintage gems… consummate musicianship, groove, style and panache… overwhelming motoric jazzers! " ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Blues & Soul Magazine
Led by trumpeter Nick Etwell (Tom Jones, Mavis Staples, Foo Fighters) this crack unit of erudite musical gunslingers have worked with some of the biggest names in music including Amy Winehouse, Beck, David Axelrod, Mark Ronson, Jill Scott, Jack White, Dionne Warwick, Mumford & Sons, Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Ronnie Spector, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Antibalas, Spiritualized and the Atomic Bomb Band to name but a few. These instrumental groove merchants fuse boundless energy and incredible musicianship to create tight, funky music that moves the mind, body and soul whilst simultaneously tearing the roof off every venue they play. Their third studio album - More Filth (Acid Jazz Records) - has taken the band out on the road in the UK, Europe and the USA, receiving airplay on BBC 6Music (Huey Morgan, Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show), BBC Radio London and Jazz FM. The album is undoubtedly their filthiest yet, jam packed full of Soul Jazz workouts and heavy funk grooves scientifically engineered to have you moving and grooving so hard you'll burn holes in not 1 but 2 pairs of boots and a large chunk of that dance floor too. Bad. Ass. The end of 2017 also saw the Filth’s track 'Mr Morris' feature on The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club Vol 5 compilation, out now on Freestyle Records. Let’s see what 2018 brings…
“Extremely funky. Intricate guitars, perfect brass breaks and groovy Hammond, all moving along to a beat that should see the dance floor breaking into a sweat without question.” Scootering Magazine

The intimate setting was perfect as we were treated to the smooth romantic 1980s Jazz-funk from the album's we all had.....as well as the floor-filling grooves. First class

Great evening with my wife and sister. The act was really good and excellent wait service plus you know what you are getting food wise which was enjoyable even if not part of my diet!!

Not a large space so probably not good for large groups but very good for an intimate evening or few friends. Will be back at some point 😀

User

Great afternoon yesterday with partners family seeing Blue Harlem. Atmosphere., staff and service all spot on. Great group, great afternoon. Definately worth a visit if you are into jazz. Little hidden gem.

User

Great Venue (Holborn) and band (Simply Dan) who played a superb set.

Food and service also very good.

User

Ate great food, saw a legend (Rusty Egan who was behind some of the music that has inspired and delighted me since I was 15 years old), talk about his extraordinary life, heard some great music, in a small and intimate venue. A very different experience to your average gig. I'm so glad I went. Highly recommended.

User

Amazing night listening to incredibly talented jazz musicians, Bob Baldwin, Nils and Westley Joseph. Customer service and attentiveness from the waiters, 1st class. Amazing food, the best gluten free chocolate brownie I've ever tasted. The coconut sorbet was delicious too. We sat right next to the stage and the guys were so interactive and friendly. Wonderful night celebrating my forthcoming birthday on Tuesday. Loving my Alley Cats CD, Nils. Thank you Pizza Express Live we will definitely be back. #pizzaexpresslive #amazingjazz #greatnightout

A fantastic evening out with friends watching the Will Vinson Quartet play world class music in Soho to an attentive audience of all ages. Fast and friendly service too! Thank you for bringing outstanding musicians to the stage over the years and more exciting acts to come by the looks of it! Highly recommended.

User

I really enjoyed the show I saw, but found the sound iffy, and noise of chairs scraping across the floor above our heads distracting and annoying. Please could you add nylon discs to their feet to remove this annoyance. With regards to the sound, while I know it's a very tough space to work in, the levels seemed set and then left, and thus the nuances between Mr Okin's vocal trumpeting and his far louder singing were unbalanced, with the singing sounding shouty at times.

Food and service were good, and my request to change tables handled with aplomb.

User

The music was excellent however the place and the food were a let down. It was so squashed and the tables so small that it was really not comfortable. When my food arrived, the sauce was warm and the fish was stone cold, I am not sure that it had been defrosted properly. My husbands pizza was also cold. We complained and they put the pizza back in the oven while they presumably microwaved my pasta. The pizza was therefore hard and overcooked so we asked for another. My brownie was bland and chewy and very reminiscent of gluten free brownies I bought in Sainsbury. If it wasn't for the wonderful singing from Sarah Munro I would have given the place no stars at all.

User

The food and drink prices are somewhat eye-watering so tap water only next time but at least the evening of Nerdity made up for that...

User

1) although we arrived as a group of 7 we were imediately told to sit on diff tables due to pre booking arrangements. Some of the party were told to wait over one side as their names were not on the list which they clearly were. After waiting 35 mins we were seated. We ordered drinks, i waited 40 minutes for mine of which my husband enquired 4 times before it eventually arrived. Despite other people arriving and having drinks immediately. I came to see my son play, i heard him but was seated behind a huge pillar. Therefore could not see him. The drinks were extortionate. 3 people, 2 beers, 2 gin and tonics and a rum and coke. £59.00. To make matters worse a £7 service charge was added. Unfortunately all the above spoilt what was a great evening. I will never come back here and i hope other guests/visitors are treated with respect and good manners. DREADFUL.
