We visited today for the 1st time and it was a special occasion as it was my Mother-in-law's 80th Birthday.

Everythybg was lovely and the little extras such as putting candles in the cake we surprised her with and singing happy birthday meant so much.

We will definitely be returning, thank you so much xx

User

There was a large group of us who ate here last night. The staff all round from the waitress to the chef were very good. We had very quick service and nothing was too much trouble. The meals came out very quickly and everyone enjoyed their meal. I will definitely be recommending this restaurant and will be going back soon.

Thank you to all staff who worked last night.

User

Just wanted to say a huge thank you, we visited last night for the second time, the service was amazing, and the food was fabulous!!! But the assistant manager now he deserves a medal!! I was very poorly and ended up collapsing outside the front door trying to get air, he went above and beyond, stopping people from coming in, through the entrance where I was being assisted to by a paramedic, and stopping people gawping at me, he was kind and patient and showed true compassion!!! We will be back because I love this place but next time without the drama thank you and your staff for everything you are all angels xxx

Just thought would pop in as in the area on a bank holiday monday, no wait for the table as we missed the busy afternoon so was seated straight away and we had toad in the hole and steak and ale pie, food arrived within 15 mins and was excellent, piping hot and plentiful.

Nicely decorated and relaxed atmosphere and helpfull staff.

Would highly recommend if in the area.

User

I came last night for a meal with my husband and a couple of friends and we all had 3 courses and drinks and it was all fantastic! We didn’t wait long for anything and it was all cooked to perfection The Princess Charlotte is a lovely pub/restaurant with not only wonderful food but great service and a great atmosphere! I highly recommend you go

User

Have been here several times with various family members and husband. Our first visit was during heavy snow, place was packed, my husband and I shared the whole rotisserie chicken, it was delicious, prompt service and was very pleased. 2nd visit was with my daughter who ordered chicken and steak, unfortunately she said chicken was grilled rather than rotisserie and the steak was bland, my husband and I returned with the in laws, all very pleased with food and service. Visited again last night with other daughter and boyfriend, I opted for sirloin steak, cooked perfectly and very tasty, the other 3 meals were all enjoyed. Will return again, great parking, close to where we live and a great reasonably priced meal with plenty of choice

User

First time visiting the restaurant, and we was all pleasantly surprised with the amazing service and food.

We was served by a young lady who seemed very happy to be working, and was very polite whilst having a laugh too. The service was outstanding.

The food was amazing, by far better any other restaurant that I have ever been to! We had 4 meals and all was very hot and tasty!

Will be coming back, and will 100% recommend it to others!

User

posh pub grub. waitress scared me by holding drinks tray at a 45 degree angle I thought the drinks were going to fall off over me. peppercorn sauce for steak didn't come out then when we asked for it it was bought out luke warm/cold. had to keep calling waiter over for more drinks. overall a very good night and we want to go back again.

User

Visited with a group of friends . Very busy and noisy. Food was lovely . My only complaint was that everything was very rushed the waitress was very pushy in getting us to order and couldn’t wait to give us the bill arrived at 8.00 and they wanted to give us the bill at 9.30 ! We were there for a catch up and a few drinks didn’t want to be rushed

User

Nice location, great parking, easy access, friendly staff.

My grumble is I’m a gravy girl, wherever we eat, I opt for the gravy choice. Checked out the menu, found the braised steak, mash and veg all served in a giant Yorkshire pud-perfect..... not available I opted for the only other dish, steak pie and mash, with a side of cauliflower cheese.

The starters came, all delicious, plenty of food, hot and tasty, and were cleared away.

All the main meals then came after about 20 minutes had passed, however I was told the cauliflower cheese would be ‘some time’. When my meal arrived the slice of pie was so hard and overheated I could pick it up, I beckoned the waitress, apologised for complaining but....(that’s what we Brits do!) and began tapping the meat of my my pie with a fork, dry chunks flew off but the pie still remained intact, held between finger and thumb, and was rock hard

The young waitress did apologise and took it straight back to the kitchen, saying it ‘wasn’t usually nice anyway’, then returned to see if I would like another meal. She also said the manager would be over to apologise personally.

By this time the rest of my party were tucking into their own meals, all delicious and perfect so I asked what was ready and she said the chicken, so I opted for chicken and sweet potato fries, lovely chicken, dry old chips. A few minutes after all this the cauliflower cheese arrived too. I’m guessing it had been forgotten as the cauliflower was virtually raw with a cheese sauce on top, could be wrong, but I only ate a small amount.

Over all 5 of the party had a delicious meal, mine was a disaster.

The staff were great although the manager never apologised and we were still charged for the steak pie as my replacement meal was £1 dearer- thanks for the gesture

Will I return? Maybe, not for a while though.

Will I recommend it? Probably, everyone else’s meal was fine.

User

Visited today for the first and last time

looks very inviting from outside and just as nice inside , but that’s as far as it goes for good things to say.

We was first served by a very lovely lady , that was then followed by several different servers ( 5 or 6 i think ) .

3 of us had Sunday roast and 4th was a child’s meal.

Unfortunately the food is tasteless and can only be described as reheated microwave meals. Beef was awful , sent back the first plate it was that bad.

The extra we ordered of cauliflower cheese was watery and wasn’t till we was nearly finished eating that one of the many servers bought over a spoon for serving.

It took ages to get someone’s attention so we could order dessert. The young man then went away and had a chat with several other staff before they decide who should take the order.

Very strange experience and will not be returning.

User

Visited last night and the venue is gorgeous, staff lovely and drinks presented well! We ordered our food thinking it would be just as good, however when receiving our mains we asked for mayo which was extremely thick and i could barely dip my chip in it (they’re prepped beforehand and cling filmed as we found out later on). Also, my ‘classic cheese burger.. served with coleslaw, gherkins, burger sauce, lettuce and onions’ was literally a very thin piece of meat with a slice of cheese and a piece of lettuce, not to mention my burger was also so over cooked that I could barely get my teeth round the edges! My other half had the hunters chicken and said it was average, however there was nowhere near enough food for the £10/£11 that we paid! We complained about the burger and were informed that staff hours had been cut so they were short on chefs (hence the amount of complaints and free food they had to give away last night), members of the front of house team were having to make the desserts (which were lovely). Most of the staff looked very young and it’s unfair to put that amount of stress on them. I would return if it was based on service as the girl who served us was lovely, gave us free desserts and chatted to us but food wise we will definitely not be returning until this issue is sorted. May I add we were amongst 3 other tables that complained about their food..

User

We had a table booked for my mates birthday. Arrived at 7.30, our food didn’t come out until 8.40, when it did come out side dishes and bits were missing, when we asked about them they said they had ran out, but didn’t offer anything to replace the missing bits, we had to ask for salad to replace the missing bits. I had a steak medium rare and it was chewy and not pleasant at all. The peppercorn sauce was vile did not taste anything like peppercorn sauce. Onion rings were well over cooked, like chewing on old boot leather! When it came to ordering deserts they were much nicer, but the kitchen managed to burn one of ours the first time, they did take it off the bill but that came out after everything else. The staff were very unprofessional, took us 10 minutes to get someone’s attention to ask for the bill, because they were having a chat in the corner. We didn’t get out of the place until 10.15 and this was a weeknight. Definitely won’t be going back! Don’t bother!

User

Very disappointed with service at Princess Charlotte Stanway Colchester today. Went there with friends today 2nd June 2018 at 5.30pm. We did not have table booked so they said to us that they are full (even though there were empty tables) and offered us to eat outside. The tables outside were bolted to the floor and it was 7 of us which was difficult as we could not move the tables together. On the other side of the pub there were 2 bigger tables with benches & there were families with kids eating there. They told to us that they will be leaving in 20 minutes so we can take their table after they will finish, which were absolutely fine with us. We went indoors & got few drinks, we were there for 1h in total. There were 8 empty tables near the bar with salt & pepper shakers on each table! We’ve been told that they don’t serve food in that area & called it ‘’drinks only area’’, which does not explain why it was salt & pepper shakers on the tables..?! We waited for the family with kids who finished their meal outside & after they left we took their table just to be told we are not allowed to order any food as it was ‘’Smoking area for drinks only’’, but the family with 2 kids was there eating before us & they have been served with no problem! Restaurant manager was very rude, and refused to serve us. Maybe she was racist because few of us spoke foreign language? This is very sad if that’s the case. We had 5 adults & 2 kids there and this is very poor service. We took the photos of the table with food plates & salt & pepper shakers as the prove that people before us has been served there. Restaurant manager did not have any logical explanation of why the previous family with kids has been served. Then in the end she left with the words: ‘’I’m not going to serve you’’. People like that should never work as a managers as it’s very bad & damaging reputation to the company. We have no intentions of going there ever again.

User

The staff are extremely rude, ignored us the whole time we were there and our waitress decided to talk about us to colleagues in front of our faces. Very very poor customer service, will definitely not be returning!!

User

Shocking meal last night , chicken wings covered in the most in edible foul ‘buffalo sauce’ which I wouldn’t feed to my dog. All you could taste was a massive punch of vinegar and an almost bin like smell to the rest of it , disgusting.

The main then came up and my chicken Breast was missing the skin and looked like it had been beaten up. This was paired with the most tasteless boot leather like piece of steak I’ve ever eaten.

Add to that an attitude given to me when bringing up these issues by the highly unprofessional and college age staff. Safe to say won’t be coming back

User

Ordered Spaghetti Bolognese and garlic bread, no garlic on Bread because they had run out wasn't informed prior, received toast (dry), got scampi and chips with no sides for £9.50 the scampi wasnt whole tail (same crap they sell in Asda recovered meat) really disappointed with our experience as the starters are amazing, manager was more than happy to take onboard our feedback. Will be coming back when they have new menu or decent produce....

User

Met by head waitress to be told full, so she said the tables over there are available for food. All tables were full apart from three. We went to sit at empty tables and told you can’t sit there, they are not for diners. What a load of cobblers. Went to Millers steak house down the road and had a lovely meal. Don’t mind a place being full but it’s how you tell people and what you offer to do.

User

Just had lunch here. Though several tables inside were free, the manager told us they were booked and we would have to eat outside. I specifically said that would not be suitable as I did not want to sit with smokers but she assured me that smoking was only on the other side far away from diners. Within minutes of placing our order a group sat down on the next table and lit up. We moved to another table but could still smell it. Then another group came and sat down just having drinks and lit up too. My son went to complain and the manager said she would send a waitress out to ask them to stop but could do nothing if they didn't. She came out but said nothing.

Two things .... if you can't manage, don't take the salary and don't ask your staff to do anything you couldn't do yourself.

The training is obviously poor because she could easily have offered us a table inside. And her explanation that they were all pre-booked was a total fabrication because when we finished our meal there were five empty tables .

The food was poor and our special requests were totally ignored.

I am not making this complaint to get a free voucher because you couldn't pay me to eat there again.

If the manager cannot walk up to a diner and say politely that this is a non-smoking area, then what would happen if someone lit up inside? Or a fight started? Or someone refused to pay?

I rarely complain because keeping the public happy can be hard, but this is total neglect to fulfil her job description.
