Radway Cinema, Sidmouth

About Radway Cinema, Sidmouth

The Radway is a traditional single screen cinema in Sidmouth, Devon.

Radway Cinema, Sidmouth Description

The Radway opened in 1928 and was planned to operate primarily as a theatre. The current ticket desk, a store on the floor above and a part of the projection room on the second floor are all located within the shaft of a lift which took patrons to the balcony foyer and also up again to a cafe and bar.

As a live theatre it quickly failed and was soon altered to better accommodate cinema use.

The open staircase from the ground floor lobby is an attractive feature, taking patrons to a cafe-bar and on into the balcony. During the 1960’s a modernisation programme was carried out, the down side of this was the destruction of original light fittings etc, but one benefit was the fitting of a sweeping, curved curtain track across the earlier proscenium which provides a colourful visual focal-point during intervals.

Whilst the building enjoyed a very thorough refurbishment in 1999 care was taken to do this as sympathetically as possible in order to retain its early 30’s charm. Fortunately period light fittings had been stored at another cinema following alterations in the 1970’s: these were re-glazed & wired and fit the style of this building perfectly. At this time seating capacity was reduced (a total of 720 was claimed on opening in 1928) and this allowed for most of the balcony armchair seating to be arranged in pairs separated by tables.

The cinema has a refined neo-classical facade with early art-deco embellishments.

We had a lot of requests for this one, but we have managed to secure 2 shows of:
They Shall Not Grow Old
On the centenary of the end of First World War, Academy Award-winner Peter Jackson presents the World Premiere of an extraordinary new work showing the Great War as you have never seen it.
... This unique film brings into high definition the human face of the First World War as part of a special London Film Festival presentation alongside a live Q&A with director Peter Jackson hosted by Mark Kermode.
Using state of the art technology to restore original archival footage which is more than a 100-years old, Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there.
Driven by a personal interest in the First World War, Jackson set out to bring to life the day-to-day experience of its soldiers. After months immersed in the BBC and Imperial War Museums’ archives, narratives and strategies on how to tell this story began to emerge for Jackson.
Using the voices of the men involved, the film explores the reality of war on the front line; their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate; slept and formed friendships, as well what their lives were like away from the trenches during their periods of downtime.
Jackson and his team have used cutting edge techniques to make the images of a hundred years ago appear as if they were shot yesterday. The transformation from black and white footage to colourised footage can be seen throughout the film revealing never before seen details.
Reaching into the mists of time, Jackson aims to give these men voices, investigate the hopes and fears of the veterans, the humility and humanity that represented a generation changed forever by a global war.
Playing: Saturday 10th November 2:30pm
Sunday 11th November 12:15pm

Great Cinema, although it retains its traditional feel it is very tidy and well decorated. Seats comfortable and well spaced. Sound/ screen view superb. Prices for both tickets and snacks is good. Service is nice and friendly. Cant think why you would need to trek into busy Exeter for an overpriced Vue that has mostly poor screens and bad seating!!!

First visit to this cinema watched a good film but loved the whole experience. Seating comfortable and lots of room (we were upstairs) there was a place to leave your drink next to your seat whilst you are watching the film. There was a good selection of drinks and snacks to purchase before the film. We were in the upper circle not many seats which was nice so advisable to book beforehand. We waited outside and were then shown to our seats by a very pleasant member of staff. Initial welcome and purchase of tickets was good very pleasant staff upstairs we purchased both drinks alcoholic and hot drinks. The toilet facilities were excellent very clean and the rest room had seating available. On leaving the cinema we were wished a Happy New Year which I didn’t expect. Would certainly return to this venue.

Visited for the first time, nice prefilm drinks and you can take them in with you. Leg room was a bit on the tight side, but comfortable seating, I had a bottle of tribute and was a little surprised to be asked if I wanted a glass, did he really think I was going to drink from the bottle.

My husband and I came down for a few days holidaý from London, and we are use to lots of choices of cinemas and films. We really enjoyed this cinema. It was small, friendly, comfortable and excellent sound, and alot cheaper. The only issue is there was only one choice, but suited us fine, because that's what we wanted to see. Which was Beauty and the Beast, which was very good
