To celebrate #LocalHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting some of the ways we collect and tell local stories here at the Museum. This week we’re focusing on #Film 🎬
We’ve made films for many of our exhibitions over the years on topics such as shopping, allotments and even the 2012 Olympics. Many of our films feature oral histories – personal stories and memories of Redbridge’s residents.
You can access many of the films we have produced online on our Vimeo page. This clip is from our film about the history of the Kelvin Hughes factory in Hainault which made navigational equipment for land, sea and air for 95 years. Watch the full film on vimeo.com/redbridgemuseum

To celebrate #LocalHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting some of the ways we collect and tell local stories here at the Museum. This week we’re focusing on #Photography.
Husband and wife Fred and Daisy James of Wanstead and Woodford shared a passion for photography together. They were active members of two photographic societies, lectured on photography, and entered and even judged photography competitions!
The couple’s interest did not fade even during World War Two when, as Air ...Raid Precaution Wardens for Aldersbrook, Fred photographed them both along with their fellow wardens to accompany a poem he’d written about experiences of the Blitz. Fred’s humorous outlook and cheery attitude is reflected in the poem and seems to have kept them going even at a dark time.
Never Too Late
1. One little Warden / Takes a hefty sniff, / “Blimey! Ain’t it awful? What a rotten whiff!!” 2. Two Little Wardens / Seem to be in doubt / If you think what I think, / Call the others out! 3. Four Little Wardens / Looking grave, alas. / “Jerry’s been and done it - /It’s Persistent Gas! 4. Four Air Raid Wardens / Say “Let’s to our tasks; /Swing our little rattles – What about our Masks? 5. Four Fearsome Wardens: / - What an ugly crew! – Make one say with justice / “Send them to the Zoo!” 6. Four Crumpled Wardens / Moralise our rhyme. / Put you gas mask on – but / PUT IT ON IN TIME!

This week we visited Woodford County High School For Girls for the final session of our #WonderWomen project.
After viewing the footage from the oral history interviews the girls carried out in April, they wrote and recorded their own voiceovers & wrote a music brief.
The Year 9 Time Travellers have been working really hard on this project and we can't wait to see the final film! 🎬

To celebrate #LocalHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting some of the ways we collect and tell local stories here at the Museum. This week we’re focusing on #Archives.
Archives are historic records that are used for researching the past. They can look like pretty much anything – letters, tickets, receipts, maps, building plans, photos, books & more. Archives are sorted in collections depending on the person or organisation who they originally belonged to.
Pictured here are some of ...the items in the (huge) archive collection of the Ilford Scottish Association, a social club for the Scottish community living in Ilford in the 20th century. The group had a very busy social calendar of events from Scottish celebrations like Burns’ Night and the Hogmanay Ball to their Annual Dinner and Dance and monthly Whist Drives.
[1. Tickets to Burns’ Night celebrations; 2. Programmes for the Annual Concert; 3. Newspaper clippings about the club’s events; 4. Photographs taken at various events; 5. Minute books for Annual General Meetings]
You can access these archives and more by appointment through our Heritage Service. Email info.heritage@visionrcl.org.uk or call 020 8708 2422.

To celebrate #LocalHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting some of the ways we collect and tell local stories here at the Museum. This week we’re focusing on #Objects.
Many of the household objects that you see in the Museum may once have belonged to Gladys Harrison. Born in 1912, Gladys lived most of her life in the same house in Manor Park. She collected lots of different items, from Edwardian toys and food tins to #WW2 ration books and her brother Ron’s souvenirs of war. The Museum now holds her collection which represents 100 years of everyday life.
Pictured here are some of the objects we hold belonging to Gladys – you can see there’s quite a variety!
