A poem I wrote for a retirement.
As a jam-packed, frolic-filled career Is coming to an end. We are gathered here, one and all... For a very special friend.
A nurse who's traveled country wide, North, South, East and West. Who quickly made herself a name As being up there with the best.
Dundonald was where it all began. To Holles Street, then Letterkenny. Then finally here to Aberfoyle Where she touched the hearts of many.
Never one for lying down, Nor one for a hiatus, In Holles Street she fast achieved Near legendary status.
She should've been awarded there. She should've stood proud on a rostrum. Receiving thanks for being great And a 'Fountain of Colostrum'.
A nurse who'd skip the breakfast To do the make-up and the hair. With the style of Audrey Hepburn And the vocal cords of Cher.
When she's around it's never dull. To produce a laugh, she'll never fail. Like when emerging from the ladies loo With an impressive Andrex tail.
A heart of gold and full of chat, She doesn't discriminate Because EVERY patient that she sees Will keep the next one late.
The I-Pad comes in fully charged And it's always within reach, To show photos of the grandchildren, Roughly eighty-odd of each.
Now, go and enjoy your golden years, And let Michael spoil you rotten. But always remember, you're smile and wit, Will never be forgotten.
The mirror in the treatment room Won't get half as much attention. But be sure that there'll be smiles all round Every time your name is mentioned.
So here's to Joan. You've been a star. Take a bow and strike a pose. And let us bid a fond farewell To our Letterkenny Rose
