Fishing for Bonefish I often see various species of Triggerfish feeding in the shadows with their tails up on the surface. They are so named as they escape predators by diving into a crevice, raising their first dorsal spine, then locking it erect with a "trigger" device in the 2nd spine, lower their pelvis becoming firmly wedged in. Powerful jaws and sharp teeth enable them to eat invertebrates like sea urchins. Pictured here is a Ocean triggerfish caught by my father on a s...hrimp fly putting up a very good fight like a big bonefish, much darker in the water. They seem to be able to change their colour as this one went a very pale blue-grey once lifted out of the water, it happy swan off once put back!

I am always looking at marine life on the sandy flats and seagrass beds whilst fishing for Bonefish. I sometimes see Queen Conch, a the large marine snail of the Caribbean Sea. Whilst the inside of their shells are bright pinky orange, pictured here on my round porcelain plate, along with a photograph of one I have turned upside down, the outside is sandy coloured blending into their surroundings, so they are quite hard to see. They feed on plants and algal matter, the female... lays her sticky eggs on the sand, where they quickly become covered with sand and other material, offering them camouflage and protection from predators. The oldest individuals have been estimated to reach ages of 40 years!
