River Cottage

About River Cottage

River Cottage HQ, found in Devon, UK, is home to an award winning Cookery School, unique dining experiences, memorable events and weddings. Our 17th century farmhouse is now open available for guests to stay in on a B& B or exclusive use basis.

River Cottage Description

River Cottage has given millions of TV viewers a taste for great cooking since 1998, when Hugh first brought his famous food ethos to Channel 4.

Our hard-hitting campaigns have changed the eating habits of a nation and improved the welfare and sustainability of animals and fish.

These days River Cottage splits neatly into three. Our River Cottage HQ, found on the Devon and Dorset border, is home to everything we do and is the base for our Cookery and Chefs' School, unique dining experiences, memorable events and weddings. Our 17th Century farmhouse, renovated in 2019, is available to stay in on a B& B or exclusive use basis.

There are three River Cottage Kitchens, our award-winning restaurants and deli's based in the South West where we combine our philosophy with the finest producers in Axminster, Winchester and Bristol.

Then there is the online community, crammed with amazing people who have created the most knowledgeable centre for cooks, gardeners, smallholders and campaigners on the web, and we're proud of that. It's yours, not ours, and it's open to everyone to share their ideas, recipes and stories.

It's our greatest delight to share our passion for food integrity and consumption of local, seasonal produce with tens of thousands of people every year.

And what a feast it was. @honeyandco showcased the mastery of middle eastern cuisine over the @kadai fire pit. As the sun set, guests at our long table, feasted on burnt aubergine and pickled peach salad, followed by lamb with Carlin-pea salad and cauliflower shawarma. Big up thanks to @salcombegin for the cocktails and the support of Ben Bulger

Wonderful 2 days of family fun, fantastic food. The sun shone perfectly on this weekend’s event which made it all the more perfect for visitors and artisans. Thank you Hugh for putting this together. Faerie and bubble man went down a storm. Loved the duck hearding, beautiful gardens and entertaining tours. dollyhotdogs was well received, I have a mini cleaver made from recycled Land Rover leaf springs, a few too many local ciders 👍

We just had the most enjoyable, inspirational day learning to cook fish. Head Chef made us all feel relaxed and made our mouths water before we even started.

We couldn't believe how many delicious dishes we made, including muscles, squid, whiting, brill and all in several ways.

Our only disappointment was we rushed off and didn't have the strawberry sorbet.

The setting is everything you could imagine from the tv series and the staff all clearly love their jobs and help you relax and feel welcome.

Definitely good value too.

Good on you Hugh.

We'll Be back for more!

Charles and David.

We attended the River Cottage Fair and had a wonderful day out. There were lots of stalls with free tastings. A great array of produce to buy. Lots of free activities for children too.Thank you River Cottage for a super day out x

User

Visited for lunch with friends on a bank holiday. Not at all busy which was strange. The menu is fabulous, not expensive and our food was delicious.

User

This was our first experience and we loved every minute from start to finish. The food, service and hospitality was outstanding. Hugh was brilliant and despite a few giddy people asking silly questions and filming him on their phones while he was trying to speak it was superb. The drinks were a bit expensive but hey, how often do you get to eat at River Cottage with Hugh himself introducing the menu! We love the whole ethos of River Cottage and thank Hugh for being so inspirational

We will return

Thanks Gill for a great course “wood fired cookery course” was amazing loved the feast at the end. Well looked after and really informative... see you on my next course!

User

Thank you for the most amazing Friday night feast which my daughter and I took part in this weekend. The whole experience has given us many special memories from the tractor ride down to the farm, the welcome in the yurt, the exploring of the farm and nosying in the kitchens, meeting all the other guests and of course the amazing food served over the course of the evening.Being able to go into the kitchen as the chefs were cooking and chatting to them was amazing. I have to say that all the staff showed what a magnificent team they were, obviously very happy working in this unique environment and I cannot praise them enough. Too far to travel there and back the same day we combined our treat for my 70th birthday with a stay in Exeter so the whole three days was superb with River Cottage being the highlight. The visit will never be forgotten and we will be back sometime in the future. Thank you again - and don't forget to give Lisa a special treat, I still feel guilty at calling her 'one eye Jack!'

My husband and I attended the River Cottage experience day yesterday, and loved every minute of it! The food was plentiful and delicious. The cookery lessons were fun and informative. The staff were friendly and helpful. A very sociable, enjoyable day. We would love to do another course in the future.

I’ve previously had the best Sunday lunch - ever - at River Cottage but they surpassed their own incredibly high standards for the wedding of our friends James and Kate. The food was sublime, the drinks amazing and the staff were fun, efficient and made a special day even better. Their thoughtfulness on every front in that beautiful setting made it a day to remember forever.

User

I was lucky enough to get a fish cookery course for my 40th. What a fabulous experience, from the moment we arrived and met by the fabulous Vicky! A swift tractor ride down the lane and entered the amazing kitchen. The head chef Was an absolute inspiration, explaining and demonstrating extremely well! No one left behind, he helped and encouraged everyone. His passion awe inspiring. I cant thank you all enough for a wonderful day, one that will stay with me forever! Thank you River Cottage x

Had the most wonderful day with Steven lamb on pig in a day course. Listening to the others there, it was also the best course they had attended at RC. Gave you all the confidence you need to get going and manage butchering a half pig, which cuts for which product plus advice on how to cure meat and prepare wonderful meals. No good for Vegans, but if you love your meat and want to make your own bacon, hams or sausages this is a fantastic course to attend. Both Steve's were perfect hosts and Chef Ben and the local farmer (Dan?) were incredible. Even if you are travelling from far away you won't regret attending, highly recommend.

User

Had a great day at the pig in a day course was made feel very welcome, the course itself was very informative and hands on. The food was amazing will definitely be back. Had a few odd looks on way home through security at the airport thow when they found my bag full of meat products lol. Steve lamb was an excellent host along with all the other staff.

User

Had a fantastic day with chef Connor and the team. We had great instructions and the resultant food I cooked was top shelf. The highlight of my holiday with my wife. A short trip from Australia but well worth it.

User

Fantastic weekend, lots to do, food and drink, lots to sample, great value day out, no rushing around just roll up to a display and sit, watch and learn lots. Animals to see, and a great tractor ride up and down from the car park, plus the weather gods where in our favour, see you all next year.

User

Excellent experience! It's worth the 6 hours traffic at the M5 motorway from Oxfordshire. Next year I'll go a day ahead to avoid the long que on the motorway. Every one are all kind and friendly, the tractor ride was such an experience for my daughter who absolutely love Hugh and Tom Kerridge.

Been to river Cottage deli today and bought some tiffin, millionaires shortbread and some jam great place but parking a bit awkward

User

Very enjoyable evening. 2nd visit and just as impressive as the 1st. On a personal note. I'm not a fan of any shell fish so the raw oysters weren't an option for me and the beetroot alternative is also off my list. Everything else was well prepared and presented

User

We didn’t actually eat here today, but we were disappointed after driving from Weymouth to The Axminster canteen for breakfast, to then find you are closed for a refurb. I did check your website prior to leaving and found no mention of this. We therefore had to resort to going to a local cafe and instead of having what I imagine would have been a lovely breakfast at your venue, we had a disappointingly bland breakfast elsewhere.
