Romanian Cultural Institute In London Description

The Romanian Cultural Institute in London, or ICR /RCI London, is part of a global network of cultural institutes and together we make up Romania’s main arm of cultural diplomacy. We act on several levels: as a diplomatic mission, cultural management unit, artistic and PR agency and as a centre for research and documentation.

These four principal functions are executed in a whole series of activities. As a diplomatic mission, we are in charge of cultural and public diplomacy projects, managed by a dedicated team of professionals. We are also responsible for creating long-term partnerships between Romanian and British individuals and institutions. We devote equal energy to initiatives about Britain for Romanians and we collaborate with Romanians in the UK on community projects.

Photographer Oana Stoian is part of EUNIC London’s ‘Another Europe’, an outdoor photographic exhibition that opens @Kings Cross this Thursday 12 July, 4pm. Come meet her and other European artists!
Oana Stoian was born in Lugoj in 1993. Her passion for art distinguished itself since childhood, when she started to express her creativity - first through painting and then, during her adolescence, through the discovery of photography as her medium of choice. Her work shows an ab...straction of reality, a loss of identity in the context of mysterious scenes. In 2015, she received her Bachelor's degree from the Department of Photography-Videography at the Art and Design College, West University of Timisoara and, in 2017, her Master's degree in Publicity Graphics. In December 2015, she had her first personal photography exhibition in Timisoara, followed in 2017 & 2018 by several personal and group exhibitions. In 2016, Oana was selected for the Professional shortlist in the Staged category of the Sony World Photography Awards.

As part of our special programme dedicated to the Romanian Centenary (1918-2018), we concluded the first half of our 2018 musical programme with an exploration of Romanian folklore as the most important source of inspiration in the Romanian classical music tradition. Folk singer Ioana Maria Ardelean and tenor Daniel Magdal, accompanied by pianists Diana Spânu and Aurel Mustăţea, exemplified this crucial connection with a programme of traditional songs and related works by George Enescu, Tiberiu Brediceanu and Achim Stoia, many of which performed in Britain for the first time.
Many thanks to the artists and to Alex Coman for the great shots!

Wonderful news from Karlovy Vary International Film Festival: director Radu Jude has won the Crystal Globe for best film! Jury member Mark Cousins, an old friend of Romanian cinematography, said Jude’s film “points a finger at those people who are rewriting history.” "Now the awards are announced, I can say out loud how much we the jury loved Radu Jude's scorching film 'I Don't Care if We Go Down in History as Barbarians'."
Congratulations,. Radu Jude!

On the evening of 28 June, we concluded an intense but delightful day recollecting more than a century of Romanian-British travels and cultural discoveries with a panel talk and an exhibition. Chaired by Dr Alex Drace-Francis, a refined connoisseur of Romanian history and culture, the conversation brought together Romanian and British specialists and travelogue authors: Oana Cogeanu, Nick Hunt, Mihaela Irimia, Alan Ogden and Bronwen Riley. With concluding remarks from Prof. Tim Youngs, the world renowned authority in travel literature. The "Romania in English" exhibition, curated and introduced to the public by Lia Chisacof, was based on the private collection of old books and periodicals of Lia and Mircea Chisacof.
Many thanks to all the participants for their enriching contributions and to Alex Coman for the lovely photos!

'Romanians in the Great War', an exhibition that charts the eager years of neutrality (1914-1916), the fierce battles of 1916 on the Entente side, the striking victories of 1917 and the momentous victory of 1918, which offered a strategic foundation to the political unification of all Romanian provinces, is still on display at the National Army Museum until 15 July. Free entry, must see!

We are extremely proud that historian Filip-Lucian Iorga, our colleague at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest / Institutul Cultural Român, is one of the very few Romanians to have been elected a member of the Royal Historical Society. Congratulations!

Teatrul Masca Malaimare / Masca Theatre, the renowned pantomime company from Bucharest, started their UK tour with "The Clamours of Paris", an engaging show that brought to life characters of Parisian street traders. A mighty display of theatricality, silent comedy, mime and powerful costume at Winchester's long-standing Hat Fair.
Many thanks to the artists and the whole Masca family, to our partners in Winchester, the Romanian Honorary Consul in Winchester - Calin Huma, as well as to ArtReach for their commitment and support!

The Folkloric Inspiration: a Musical Experience With Ioana Maria Ardelean, Daniel Magdal, Aurel Mustatea and Diana Spanu

Ready for tonight, see you all @ RCI London, 7pm!
“This is a voyage towards us, towards our profound inner self, towards what we are and forget we are, towards what we should be more often. Our aim is that the audience understands that both our folklore and cult music bear truth and light, that they speak about us with profound simplicity. What we are is born out of the feelings and experiences which, along the centuries, have been transcribed into sounds and simple, but powerful words.” - Ioana Maria Ardelean

Having the opportunity to have had a residency @ ICRLondon a few years ago definitely helped, but that's not the main reason that makes me feel like home at 1 Belgrave Square. It is the kindness, hospitality, friendliness and professionalism of all members of the 'family' who work hard to keep the abundance of cultural events at a very high standard.
