‘Filipino cooks always place an accent on their proud regional traditions, unique family styles and personal experiences. Here at Romulo Café, while we love to be innovative, many of our dishes are based on heirloom recipes so loved by my gourmet grandparents, Carlos P. Romulo and Virginia Llamas-Romulo.
To me, this is food that spells comfort, and the unforgettable taste of home.’

Tavuk Adobo. You have to be able to speak Turkish to know that this means 🍗 #chickenadobo. Yesterday, it was Indonesian. Today, I am sharing the BBC World Service feature of Lola Virgina's Romulo Café London recipe which reached about 32,000 viewers. Filipino 🇵🇭 cuisine is getting known in the world. (so is Arly Gozum-Niblett as chicken adobo endorser par excellence)
There are now people in Ankara going tavuk adobo is lezzetli!

We had a lovely lunch at Romulo Cafe last Easter Monday. Lovely food, lovely staffs and thanks for the free pandesal and chocnut. We will surely book again soon. Husband loved the crispy pata and he said “masarap”.

Usually Filipino food in London is sub-standard preying on the longings of Filipinos for their home food. Not this place though - it’s restaurant quality tasty Filipino food done with a slight twist at a reasonable price. Servings are big, and the service is excellent. With the hundreds of restaurants to choose from in London this is one of the few that I do return to.

User

The food is lovely but what we found amazing is how attentive the staffs are. They are constantly looking out for what the customers may need. Highly recommended!

Romulo’s is the place to go if you want to enjoy authentic, delicious Filipino food in a tastefully decorated setting. You can bring friends here if you want to introduce them to Filipino food, and your family here to get a taste of home! The pancit bihon guisado is delicious and tastes so much like my Mum’s pancit, and I always order the sisig with its delicious apple and cream type toppings. It is expensive to those of us who are used to cooking these dishes at home, but if you want to be served and enjoy delicious food surrounded by interesting photos and portraits, it is well worth it!

User

Oh my gosh, Food, service was top notch. Absolutely the best place in London if you want to experience Filipino Good elevated. We will be back, made our special Occasion very special

User

Loved all their authentic Filipino menus that we ordered esp their chicken relleno. Staff are accommodating and very attentive. I just said in the booking, “it’s a pre birthday lunch” to my surprise, they made an effort to sing happy birthday with ice fountain sparklers. Their pandesal is second to nonethey have a ‘pandesal to go’ but they couldn’t make our order in time

User

It was a great experience...food was delicious and staff are very friendly and attentive. Thank you Romulos cafe!!!

User

If you are searching for an authentic and the best Filipino cuisine in London, then go to Romulo Café... ;)

User

I have been 10 times or more to Romulo Cafe and still be coming back with friends because of the delicious Filipino dishes on offer. The Staff are very gracious and welcoming with their smiles . The owners are just so accomodating and friendly. The sight of Pandesal on the table will stir the memories of home....awws take out please!

From the moment you enter this restaurant the aroma of good food draws you in further into a large and welcoming interior belied by its compact window on the world of High Street Kensington. With an intriguing and unique menu of speciality Filipino favourites you are spoiled for choice. With a manageable list of mouthwatering delights you will not be disappointed, other than having to take your leave still wanting more! A second and subsequent visits will surely follow ...

Been here for couple of times with friends and former colleagues from PH. A great place to experience Filipino cuisine in the heart of London. Highly recommended is the crispy pata kare kare and pansit guisado and of course, Pandesal! Cosy place and accessible to public transport, Romulo cafe is the perfect spot to experience the unique taste of home. Thank you Romulo cafe!

A party of 14 had the most wonderful evening on Saturday 7th April for my partner Chito's birthday. Rowena and her team were so very attentive to make the evening perfect. The service, food and drink was exceptional and it was an experience for many of us to taste the cuisine of the Philippines. The icing on the cake was the specially prepared Purple Yam Cake and Leche Flan which are Chito's favourites.

I cannot thank you enough and we very much hope to be back soon.

We had dinner here on June 12 (Philippine Independence Day). For starters, they served pandesal or their version of it which was quite hard, not the soft pandesal that Philippines is well known for. Then we ordered chicken & pork adobo (which was served with mashed squash and tasted quite good), pakbet (a bit dry), pancit (which was ok), and crispy pata which was very, very good! The calamansi juice we ordered was great, they added soda water to it. The ambience was elegant and the cafe was full of memorabilia pictures of the late Carlos P. Romulo. I was looking forward to the famous Filipino hospitality or at least hoping the staff were oriented with it, but sadly they were not even friendly. But still for Filipinos living abroad who miss Filipino food, Romulo Cafe London will do.

Before I start this review can I please reiterate how I despise poor customer service. I see it as, you get paid to do a job, therefore do it properly.

We went here for my sisters birthday yesterday evening. I was on time but unfortunately the rest of my family was a tad late. I observed the service I received throughout and I was always respectful by smiling and saying my please's and 'thank you's. I must say although the ladies serving us was adequate in regards to their actual job, I cannot stand the miserable look on their faces!

It started off with the way the order was taken, it was our first time and we were not 100% sure about some of the food in the menu, my sister was spoken to like some sort of idiot. She noticed it but she decided not to say much so to not make any of us feel embarrassed.

The young men that did at some point assist us near the end of the evening was lovely and polite. The owners/supervisors were also very bubbly and welcoming and I appreciate that. Near the end I realise that we were approaching closing time and we had ordered too much food but I couldn't help but feel uneasy and uncomfortable when two waiters would hover around us. My mother noticed and so did my sister's and felt uneasy and felt the need to rush.

I can however confirm how lovely the food was! Filipino restaurants in London are scarce and usually mediocre or below. I must say the food was lovely and enjoyable. When I first looked at the menu I did raise an eyebrow or two at the price but after tasting the food I was fairly satisfied.

Despite the customer service I am already planning to bring a few friends with me to taste what Filipino food should taste like.

May I just add that it was nice that they did sing my sister a happy birthday but as I left early, not once did I get a glimpse of smile or even a good night.

Maybe it's just me but personally I could have given a 5 star if the servers we had were different or perhaps if they would just smile even once in a while and just look welcoming.

We went to Romulo cafe to celebrate my Birthday with our 2 year-old son. Despite the place being 75% empty on that Sunday evening, the waitress put us in the corner far from other diners. The table was clearly inadequate to hold all the plates we were planning to order. She asked us if the table was alright so I said no and requested if we can be moved to a bigger table but she refused and said our child would be fine in a highchair anyway. We moved on from that and my husband decided to change our son’s nappy while I looked at the menu. When he asked another waitress where the toilet was, he was told that they have no changing facility. That wasn’t a problem as he can change him in a regular toilet but this lady insisted NO and said that he cannot change him there - she even told us the mother should do the changing instead.

After changing him we decided to move ourselves as clearly there was no one in the restaurant. The waitress then moaned at us for moving as the tables were reserved (although she “let” us stay and all night only 1 other group came!?). Shortly after that another waitress complained we had our pushchair with us and told us to move it by the front door. This was the first time they had mentioned this!? Why not tell us on the way in!

Anyway onto the food which was ok but far from a restaurant standard you would expect. The kare kare was nice but the chicken relleno was nothing special.

At the end of the night we then had to pay the mandatory 12% service charge despite receiving poor, rude service most of the night.

Wouldn’t recommend this place as its over priced, average food and rude service. There are other Filipino restaurants that provide a much better experience. We have never been treated like this anywhere before.

User

Though food is ok but most of it including drinks are overpriced, not to mention the frowning service charge!

Not only it makes you frown, some waitresses are like having menstrual cramps when you ask for something.

Not family friendly and definitely not child friendly coz they don’t have the facility for children.

User

The food was good but the staff are not well equipped for big groups. First, they got most of our drinks orders incorrect and we had to send our cocktails back. In particular, my grandmother ordered a mocktail since she’s on antibiotics but they still served her the more expensive alcoholic cocktail and she felt very ill as a result. Second, they also got the food order incorrect. They gave us too much crispy pata and they gave us the larger portions of rice even though we requested small portions. They also gave us pinakbet when no one had ordered it, and they were sneaky and kept coming back to our table to give it back to us. Finally, when we discussed our issues with the manager she insisted that she “trained the waitresses well” but clearly more work needs to be done. Perhaps iPads/tablets should be used to take orders to ensure that there’s no confusion.
