About Royal Academy Of Music Museum
Visit the Royal Academy of Music Museum to explore unique instruments, manuscripts and art, and discover behind-the-scenes stories from the United Kingdom.
Royal Academy Of Music Museum Description
In permanent galleries and temporary displays, visitors will see star items such as the ‘Viotti ex-Bruce’ 1709 violin by Antonio Stradivari once played to Queen Marie Antoinette, Gilbert and Sullivan’s original score for ‘The Mikado’, and a trench gramophone from the First World War. You can learn about the role the Academy and its alumni have played in musical development for nearly 200 years, and perhaps hear a live gallery demonstration of an 18th century harpsichord.
Our friendly Gallery Assistants are Academy students who will tell you more about the displays and talk about their studies at the Academy. The Museum regularly holds free public musical and lecture events, museum tours, and offers children’s trails with quizzes and puzzles.

Join us in the Strings Gallery this Thursday 23rd November, 12.30pm, for the final Soundbox event of the year (free, no tickets required):
Peter Sheppard Skaerved explores the dialogues, imaginary and real, between the music and architecture of the early 18th Century. When the great architect Nicholas Hawksmoor died in 1747, the six-day auction of his belongings included violins by the great Cremonese and London makers, and music by Corelli, Mateis, Handel, and many others. What might these mean for us? Might his love of music-making tell us something about his work as an architect, and vice versa?
We are very proud to be part of this fantastic project, increasing access to wonderful collections of instruments.
The popular Soundbox series with Peter Sheppard Skærved continues today at 12.30 in the Strings Gallery. Free admission.

Please note that there will not be a Material Matters talk today at the Museum.
Do you know a miniature musician in the making? Why not book them a place at Academy Tots this Friday 20th October? Our popular early years sessions are led by talented Open Academy Fellows.

Come and find out about the public and private worlds of C19th violin virtuoso, Niccolo Paganini. This free talk by violinist and Viotti Lecturer, Peter Sheppard Skærved, will be held in the Strings Gallery this Thursday 12th October. http://www.ram.ac.uk/whats-on/event/sound box-25
Cello Unwrapped. Please note that this event will be held in the David Josefowitz Recital Hall, not at King's Place as advertised in our autumn programme.
Join us at the museum this evening for this free lecture-recital by flautist Noémi Győri. 6pm in the Piano Gallery
We have a very exciting event in the Piano Gallery tomorrow afternoon. A lecture-recital by flautist Noémi Győri introducing her Classical Flute and Guitar Project, which aims to redefine the flute and guitar duo through creating exciting new repertoire. This is a free event but booking is essential.
Sir Malcolm Sargent became one of the best-known English composers after his talent was discovered by Royal Academy of Music alumnus, Sir Henry Wood. Our collections include batons once belonging to each conductor. Find out more about Sir Malcolm Sargent at this study day at The British Library

Did you know, as well as world-class musical instruments in our collections we also have some charming curiosities, such as these three bear bottle stoppers. Each little carved wooden bear is playing an alphorn.
Harold Steafel paid incredible attention to detail when making these miniature musical instruments, on display in the museum for a short time only. They are actually 1/5th size working replicas - the harp even comes with a tiny tuning key.
Sir Henry Joseph Wood is off on his annual trip to the BBC Proms!

This is worth a visit, both for the temporary and the permanent exhibitions. Especially if the sight of a Stradivari or Amati gives you goosebumps, as they tend to do for me :).
