We are thrilled that for the rest of the week our feed will be taken over by Gerald McMaster. HeŌĆÖll be curating and captioning a series of images to get you thinking before the #raiart2018 conference. Gerald McMaster is a curator, artist and professor of Indigenous Visual Culture and Critical Curatorial Studies at the Institute of American Indian Art. Professor McMaster will be giving the closing plenary at #raiart2018. Please share, regram and encourage people to follow this... Insta-heist! . GM: ŌĆśWhere in the world is this? English and French are obvious, but whatŌĆÖs the unusual script below? This is Inuktitut syllabics and read by Inuit in Arctic Canada. The transliteration is nuqqarit. If you canŌĆÖt read any of it, you can always recognize the visual impact of the red octagon ŌĆō STOP. Chances are unlikely you will be driving here; but if you happen to be in this Arctic capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit, population 7,700, then be prepared to also experience the end of day rush hour traffic, where the four-way STOP signs control traffickers. Cars, trucks, ATVŌĆÖs, and motorcycles, can be backed up 10 deep in either direction waiting their turn. Iqaluit is the territorial capital and therefore has federal buildings, meaning that CanadaŌĆÖs official languages, English and French, must be visible. But, this is Nunavut where the predominant culture is Inuit and most speak Inuktitut. . #Nunavut #Iqaluit #Inuktitut #Arctic #Inuit #Syllabics #IndigenousLanguage #language #design #stop #arrete #Iqaluit #public #contemporaryart #canadianart #stopsign #stopsigns #geraldmcmaster #instituteofamericanindianart

ItŌĆÖs the opening weekend of Even When I Fall, a film made by visual ethnographers telling the incredible true story of Nepal's first and only circus set up by survivors of human trafficking. The film opens today @berthadochouse @picturehousecentral and the Watershed in Bristol. The more people that go to see it this weekend, the more likely that other cinemas will pick it up on Monday, so go support ethnographic film in mainstream cinema! . Sheetal and Saraswoti met as teenag...ers in a Kathmandu refuge, both survivors of child trafficking to Indian circuses. They had been rescued and brought back across the border to Nepal, but what does the future hold for these young women returning to a home they barely remember? Even When I Fall traces their journey over 6 years, as they reclaim their breath-taking skills as circus artists and begin to build a future against all the odds. Along with 11 other young trafficking survivors, they form Circus Kathmandu ŌĆō NepalŌĆÖs first and only circus ŌĆō creating a livelihood for themselves and simultaneously working to educate and challenge the deep-seated stigma against trafficked women. This intimate, beautiful film harnesses the visual power of circus to give a unique perspective into the complex world of human trafficking. . #evenwhenifall is directed by Sky Neal and Kate McClarnon and produced by Elhum Shakerifar. #evenwhenifall #seesmallerfilmsfirst #elhumshakerifar #visualethnography #documentaryfilm #ethnographicfilm #ethnographicfilmmaker #circus #Kathmandu #nepal #humantrafficking

An art installation created by Andrei Nacu, our Photo Assistant, as a response to the ŌĆśPhotographic AffordancesŌĆÖ exhibition, curated by Prof. Paul Basu, currently on display in the RAI meeting rooms, with images taken by N. W. Thomas @reentanglements . ŌĆśThe door becomes a frame, and every time a person enters or exits the RAI, this frame contains him or her and an image is taking place. All these tableaux vivants resemble the strategy used by many early anthropologists, inclu...ding NW Thomas to photograph people as ŌĆ£typesŌĆØ, with a number assigned and sometimes literally attached to each personŌĆÖ (Andrei Nacu).
