Unlike most other energy devices used in surgery, the PlasmaJet can destroy cancer cells on the surface of organs and tissues without causing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. This means there is often no need to resect or remove the tissue in these areas which reduces the impact on a patient’s quality of life after their surgery and the amount of time they stay in hospital.

"Three weeks after the surgery I could walk 15km and by four weeks, I was able to go for my first gentle jog, which was amazing. Now just three months after the operation I can run 10km non-stop with no ill-effects — and I was back at work after six weeks"

Obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and excessive tiredness during the day, and can be life threatening due to the cumulative adverse effect on heart and brain function leading to heart attack or heart rhythm irregularities. Mostly though, it affects concentration, memory, family life and performance at work.

Patients suffering from chronic heart failure have had a miniature wireless sensor, approximately the size of a paperclip, inserted into their pulmonary artery (the core blood vessel carrying blood from the heart to the lungs). It is implanted during a minimally invasive procedure using a cardiac catheter passed through the vein at the top of the leg. The device informs doctors of any decline in the patient’s condition, even prior to them experiencing any symptoms.

"A regular check-up in November showed my lung function had improved by 10 per cent, massive for lungs as poor as mine. I walk more than 10,000 steps a day at work, with much less difficulty than before. I still use my inhalers but my quality of life is better, and hopefully through the trial I’ve helped other patients, too."
Professor Pallav Shah, who led the study, is now looking at whether the technique could also prove beneficial to those with asthma.

It is estimated that over 1 million people in the UK have an abnormal heart rate and this condition accounts for one in 10 visits to hospital. Although normally harmless, some types of arrhythmias can be dangerous. This is because they restrict blood flow to vital organs such as the heart or brain.

User

I think it's a great place. They try and make you at ease. I got great care in there and told bit by bit what will happen to me.Please do understand if you don't want to know everything you must say to them, I did want to know and they where every good and kind. Food is good but could be some changes as I find it makes me unwell. Others I spoke to found the food great and lots of it. I should have been in for 4 days but stayed there for 13. I had a procedure done but stayed longer to get my medication right. I wouldn't go there for a holiday but as a hospital they are fantastic but always can by improved and tweaking in some ways. Not always has it been good in there but it has come on leaps and bounds the nurses and the doctors were fantastic many thanks Tricia

I can't praise the hospital enough. Massive thanks to Princess Alexandra ward. All of the staff were fantastic. Friendly and reassuring from the cleaner who chatted to me while cleaning around my bed, the porter who held my hand while I waited to go into surgery, the surgeon's secretary who popped in and out of the ward to see me, the nursing staff bringing me tea all night when I couldn't sleep, catering staff making sure everybody got what they wanted. The surgeon and his team of doctors were brilliant, the physio team were great. My special thanks to healthcare assistant Felix who really looked after me.

Brompton hospital. Been there a few times now. Staff are always friendly, polite and caring. Made me feel at ease. They always introduce themselves well and have bright yellow badges with their names on them so they are easy to see and read. Catering was a little disappointing but hey we r not there for the food.! Have had a bad experience with them once too!
