This course is suitable for those who have completed the beginners course or those who have a few projects under their belt and is held in Sew Confident Studio West End. If you are unsure whether you are suitable for this course please get in touch and we can advise you!
This 5 week course aims to teach you the basics of following a commercial pattern.
You will learn how to:
... Understand the jargon and terminology used Understand all symbols and directions on a pattern Understand different fabrics The importance of a toile Fitting the toile and adjusting your pattern Pattern construction Finishing techniques
The pattern is not included in the class. You can buy sewing patterns online or in any good fabric shop. Please ensure you buy the correct sized pattern, as you cannot simply go by your dress size as these vary from company to company. When working out your size, take your rough measurements and check the measurements on the pattern to ensure it is not too small. The sales assistant in the shop will be able to help you with this.
You don’t have to pick a clothing pattern, there are a huge range of patterns available, from soft toys to home furnishings – choice is yours! We cannot guarantee that you will complete the project, as this depends very much on individual ability and the speed you work at. You will however have the knowledge and understanding to complete it at home. You may wish to do some sewing at home between classes, as you will leave the class bursting with enthusiasm! This is optional and your tutor will give you guidance on this.
Sew Confident is a fun, social learning environment where peer support comes as standard! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BRING YOUR OWN SEWING MACHINE as machines are provided.
Shortly after booking we will contact you to ask for a contact telephone number and to give you a copy of the materials list. Please keep an eye on your junk folder as our emails sometimes find their way there!

We've got a really exciting *BRAND NEW* class for you here!
In this one day class you will learn the basics of Foundation Paper Piecing: a fun and eye-catching patchwork technique that can be used to create intricate and unusual designs that may not be possible with other techniques, as well as way of ensuring really sharp and accurate points for any kind of pieced quilt block. Using a design printed on to paper, fabric is stitched through the paper which is gradually added t...o with a fold and flip method, creating the design pattern.
In the class you will firstly try a simple design, to practice your skills before moving on and creating this funky cactus design, which would make a panel for a great tote bag, pouch or perhaps a cushion panel.
Learning Outcomes:
Foundation Paper Piecing Flip and Fold Method
This is an intermediate class so some experience of quilting is ideal!

Was looking for a place for my Son to get his new Sewing machine and had asked his Fashion and textiles teacher for recommended models, so decided rather than just buy from a large chain find somewhere that was an official dealer and wasn't all the way down in England. Came across Sew Confident when looking and then noticed they offered 1on1 tuition for new machines. This was evening in the run-up to Christmas and all my questions got answered that evening. Booked the session, got through to Glasgow and jenny guided my Son through ALL of the workings of his new machine even going into trouble shooting and handy little tips. Son`s a bit quiet when meeting new people but got on fine right from word go so DEFINITELY recommend.. (p.s. Offered Tea or Coffee as well !!!!! always a bonus :D)

This is the best place to learn to sew! I've gone from a total beginner to being able to design and make my own gala dinner dress on my own in less than 2 years! I've made loads of things over this time and the girls at Sew Confident really have helped give me the skills and confidence to make whatever I like, and they are so lovely too, especially Jenny! Highly recommend this wonderful company! :)

User

The best place to learn how to sew. Have competed a patterns for beginners class (dress making) and found both Jenny & Colette to be friendly & knowledgeable tutors. Have also attended the hand embroidery class which was so good! Lisa was also a very friendly and patient tutor. In addition to both classes, I have attended many a sewical which are great way to meet people and get expert advice on your sewing projects. More importantly, I can confirm that the tea and cake are delightful at all classes/sewical! Highly recommend.

User

The beginners course was some of the best money I've ever spent. I used to enjoy sewing at school but hadn't touched a machine in years. Jenny is so knowledgable, enthusiastic, friendly, helpful and patient. I especially loved the cushions I made in class which regularly receive compliments from visitors to our house. This course definitely gave me the confidence to get sewing and I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they'd like to give sewing a go!

User

Loved the Beginner's classes at Sew Confident! Like many I hadn't looked at a sewing machine since school so didn't have a scooby at first. Jenny and her tutor made the experience relaxing, educational and so much fun. It's such a sociable and creative way to spend a midweek evening - much better than sitting in front of the telly! Would totally recommend Sew Confident and I'll definitely return in the future. :-)

User

Jenny has always been really helpful when I have contacted her outside of classes. I have attended 2 classes in the past and found them really informative and interesting! Definitely the best place for sewing lessons as you leave with a great sense of achievement, your own handmade things and a smile on your face! Couldn't fault Sew Confident!

User

I've just completed the beginner's sewing course with Tracey. The teaching was excellent, the studio was lovely, and there was a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I hadn't used a sewing machine since school but under Tracey's guidance, I was able to make a cushion, bag, make up bag and bunting! Thank you so much and look forward to coming to other classes in the future.

User

I'm so glad I stumbled upon Sew Confident over a year ago. Having owned a sewing machine & abandoned every thing I'd ever attempted I now feel I am a much more confident and knowledgeable sewer. I've been on the beginners course, the bumbag class, Kimono class & Ive had a couple of one2ones with Jenny. I have loved every class & couldn't criticise a single thing. The tutors are knowledgeable, friendly & patient. I've met some lovely people at classes. I have a very busy life, (who doesn't!) and these classes are literally the best relaxing 'me time' I get!!

Just booked my next class, the shirt dress, can't wait!!

I met Jenny at the Knit and Stitch Show at Ingilston in April. After watching her wee demo sewing a beach bag she had me hooked. I've made it myself and also did the baby changing mat and the comforter with the ribbons. I've booked the Overlocker class in a couple of weeks and want to do the Roman Blind class when it comes to Dundee. Love looking at her new ideas on Facebook and Instagram. Keep up the great work Jenny.

User

I met Jenny at Cushion and Cake when she was running the beginners course. I had not sewn since school and was very nervous but she made me feel very at ease and was very patient with us beginners. I couldn't believe the fabulous items I made especially my piped cushion. Since them I have been to the intermediate course, a make do and mend evening and a sewcial. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the courses and really enjoy going to the Sew Confident studio as its a lovely space to be creative with a very lovely and helpful tutor.

User

I have taken several classes with Sew Confident and I have gone from barely able to sew in a straight line to making all sorts of lovely things. Sewing is no longer a chore and is now one of my favourite things to do. Thank you Jenny xxx

User

I have been at a couple of Jenny's sewcial nights plus I've done the 'walkaway' and 'kimono' classes.

The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, funny but also Jenny has all the time in the world to make sure you understand both the patterns and the instructions. She never makes you feel inadequate for not understanding and wants to make sure that you get a positive experience and product to take home from her classes.

I couldn't recommend her highly enough. ❤

User

I discovered Sew Confident at the beginning of this year and haven’t looked back since!! I’ve been on several classes (shirt dress, overlocker for beginners, bra making and advent calendar) and I’ve had some 1:1 classes with Jenny. I also love the ‘sewcial’ - a great way to unwind, get help with my latest project and chat to other lovely ‘sewists’!

Jenny and Colette are absolutely wonderful- they’re so patient and encouraging and great fun too. Couldn’t recommend highly enough!!

Already booked on to 2 more classes and I can’t wait!!

User

I did the beginners course in Dundee a couple of years ago. It was fantastic as gave me the confidence to start sewing again (I hadn't done any sewing for 20 years) and I haven't stopped since. I now go to different sewing classes but only because Glasgow is too far for me to travel which is where most of the classes are. Very helpful, patient (you have to be with me) and knowledgeable. Best thing I have done for a number of years.

User

I did the 2 day beginners course and I absolutely loved it! Having not used a sewing machine since high school, I was surprised by the things that I was able to make in such a short period of time. All the basics were covered, there’s a lot of help available if you’re stuck and the environment is just really fun and relaxed. The course gave me the confidence to buy my own sewing machine so that I could start doing my own projects at home. I’ve also booked myself onto the weekend bag master class too which I’m excited for! Would definitely recommend Sew Confident to anyone who wants to get into sewing .

User

I attended the beginners course in Dundee which prompted me to get my own machine and make gifts for all my friends and family that year (tote bag galore). Really looking forward to the baby accessory class and also hopefully getting stuck into a few more projects I have for my home which I would never have been able to do if it weren't for sew confident!

User

I attended the beginner's class a few years ago and took away a lot of learnings. I didn't see Dundee classes for a while so was super excited when I saw the Beginner's quilting class.

The communications leading up the class were top notch with any questions answered in a prompt manner and a comprehensive "shopping list". Sandra over the two days was amazing. Lots of friendly chat, biscuits and most importantly I feel confident in sewing my own quilts at home now. Overall so impressed I already booked myself on the next class.

If you want to learn to sew or boost your skills in a friendly learning environment with like-minded people, then sew confident is for you.

User

I attended the Hoodie Class yesterday and at the end of 4-hrs came home with a hoodie my 7-year old loves. This was my first visit to Sew Confident, Collette was so helpful before I attended and Tracey was a great Tutor on the day. Everyone in class went home with a completed ready-to-wear hoodie to be proud of. It's re-energised me to dust off my overlocker and to get sewing some new spring/summer tops. I'll definitely be back for more sewing classes.

User

About a year and a half ago I decided I wanted to try sewing but hadn't done any since school. I figured I should get some lessons to cover the basics and found Sew Confident. I did the beginners course and found it sew enjoyable that I went on to do the intermediate course as well. I'm really glad I did - all the basics were covered, and more, in a fun, relaxed environment. Was so proud of all the lovely things I made, and the courses gave me the confidence to tackle a range of projects at home. I have since also done the overlocker class as well. Jenny is lovely and also very helpful. Just wish I had more time to do more of the classes! Would definitely recommend
