So that's it, another Captain's week completed and what a week it was. Our Captain, Phil Charnley, has done a fabulous job, with support of course from a small army of helpers who know who they are. Congratulations to all the winners who at the Captain's Prize giving were presented with some innovative and really amazing prizes. As VC I have seen first hand the investment Phil has made into this week, not just financially but with an incredible amount of time, thought and e...ffort. He began almost six months ago putting together a room at home full of prizes which he picked up and sourced along the way. So, on behalf of myself, all the winners and the club as a whole, we salute you Phil, for a job done so very well, you certainly earned the applause you received today from those present. Below are a few images of some of the winners who were able to be present earlier today to receive their prizes.

The Captain's Invitation was a huge success, thanks must go to Keith Fuller, Gary Morant and Mark Duncan for all their help with the competition and the scoring for all those that took part in the 27 holes of golf in brilliant sunshine. The golf was complimented by a wonderful dinner and prize giving. Our Captain, Phil Charnley was ably supported by visiting Captains from other clubs who were seated on his table. The entire day went so well. Phil is still holding up despite b...eing at the club every day for the past 10 days and has the weekend to look forward to with the prize giving events.
Thank you Captain for an amazing day and night!

Yesterday saw the Antiquarians take center stage through Captain's Week where they held their prestigious annual Rosebowl Trophy competition. In wonderful weather, on a course that is looking and laying well, some great scores where achieved with the overall winner declared as Vice Captain Kevin Rolfe with 39 points. Today sees the much anticipated Captains Invitation day return to the club and a large field will take on the course over a 27 hole match in high temperatures. Along with plenty of golf, I'm sure there will be plenty of antics to follow also!

The Lady Captain’s Day was held today and was a huge success The weather was kind enough to stay dry and our Lady Captain Christine Bryan held a wonderful halfway drinks and buffet for all which went down very well! This was followed by a superb lunch of grilled goats cheese, Sea Bass and at last the infamous raspberry roulade, which finally made an appearance. Prizes went to a small handful of ladies that played well but everyone agreed that all of those present today were winners as well. Many thanks went to Wendy Fuller, Daphne Smith and the Ladies committee for all their help in making the event such a success.

The outcome of course was an honourable draw as it should have been. Over lunch and after the formalities were over Kevin Rolfe, the club’s current Vice Captain, announced his own VC for his Captains year a member for 15 years Mr Ian Mann We wish them both every success ... Captains week continues today with the new blue course competition

Well, it came and it went, all too quickly, but all those concerned agreed unanimously this years Bacchus competition, if you can call it that, was a huge success and great fun. The evening could not take place without the generous and kind support of those sponsoring selected holes and entertaining the brave souls that take part. A great deal of effort went into each table and for that we as players and the club are very grateful We have to thank Marion Spencer and Sandra Dy...ckhoff for their Pimms and Rum concoction and the fabulous spread on the first. The second hole delivered the players a whisky, ginger beer and a dash of lime potion which was a real eye opener together with a host of snacks hosted by the wonderful Keith and Wendy Fuller. Onto hole 3 and we walked into a trio of famous Shortland faces, president John Clasper, Past Captain Mark Duncan, and current Ladies Captain Christine Bryant, there to serve up to us all some wicked screwdrivers and some tasty savoury snacks. Hole 4, the hot food area, delicious home made burgers by the hand of the galloping gourmet Harvey Smith were accompanied with sausages and onions and a myriad of relishes and sauces. All washed down with a very strong Pimms served up by the lovely Daphne Smith, which clearly had been helped along with a strong spirt to help us on our way, Thanks to you both. After hitting the fourth green, some of us actually did, we left to move to the fifth hole and were greeted by Le Marseillaise, and two wonderful ladies dressed surprisingly as two French people? A hit of Napoloean Brandy accomnied by either savoury or sweet treats from France was a perfect way to tackle the big par 5. Thanks to Tracy Rolfe and Sally Gosling for their help, great fun. After battling our way down the fairway to the fifth green it was time to head to the eighth to be greeted by the wonderful Morants; the ever youthful Gary and Vicky were there as always to push us further down the slippery slope we had embarked upon with some fine port and wonderful stilton cheese. Thank you Gary, and Vicky, loved the sense of Britishness about your table, especially after being hijacked by the French on hole five. As with all things , the evening had to come to an end and sadly it did, we made our way to the ninth for a smorgasbord of fun with Sue Charnley, Molly and almost everyone that had taken past. Bacchus Gin accompanied with a host of treats went down very well as we the Bacchus players attempted to hit over the trees and across the river, which, surprisingly, some of us did. Thanks again to all who played, all who helped and all the sponsors, a great start to Captain Phil Charnley's week, Shortlands style.

The annual Bacchus starts on Friday, with teams expecting to get off around 5.30, not to sure what time they'll be finishing! As usual, some truly great people have stepped forward and generously and kindly sponsored holes for which the Captain would like to offer his most profound thank you.(you know who you are) Look forward to seeing as many members on the course, if not playing, then certainly supporting and watching the spectacle unfold.

This Friday sees the start of the clubs annual Captains Week with a great many special and fun competitions planned for each day. An incredible amount of work goes into the preparation and staging of these events, so please help all those involved and thank them by signing up to as many events as you can. Show your Captain the support he deserves, and enjoy the week ahead, its going to be great fun, we can only hope the weather is kind to us.

You may have noticed that the course is carrying a little more water than it normally does due to the excessive rainfall we have had recently. Don't despair, the course will dry out soon enough, talking of drying out, the list is on the clubs notice board for the annual Bacchus competition which heralds the start of Captain's Week. Let's try and have a few new names on this years list, its a great event and the club and captain welcome your support. Please help and sign up now, we would love to see more members getting involved.

Last Friday, 7th June, the club proudly hosted its annual United Clubs Charity Shield Day in aid of the British Legion poppy Appeal. despite the very wet weather conditions, the event was well attended and a huge success. This event gets better and better each year and we could not do this without the incredible support and efforts of the members and other club's. I would like to particularly thank John Wright for all his work behind the scenes; Denis Cooper for his sponsors...hip and support; as well as Sundridge Park, Barnehurst, Magpie Hall Lane, Sidcup and Shirley park Golf Clubs who either sponsored prizes or entered teams. All were in agreement that the course was in excellent condition and thanks go out to the greens staff, Mark, Dean, Tony and Chris. In addition, thanks go to the catering and bar staff who, as we have come to expect, did a truly marvellous job. Finally my thanks go out to those members who entered teams and joined in with the raffle and auction where £805 was raised supporting this very worthwhile cause. Thanks to you all Terry Jones

Another terrific week at Shortlands with a hugely successful Ladies mixed invitational on Saturday followed by an amazing Family Fun Day Thanks of course go out to the Captain for his superb efforts in preparing the course and grounds to make this so special aided by a small army of helpers The chipping, putting and driving competitions run by Keith (27) Fuller, Gary (Gaza)Morant and Kevin (VC) Rolfe raised £200 for the captains charity. The annual Shortlands duck race run by Dave (I’ll have a San Miguel) Collen was super fun enjoyed by all and raised a further £60 for the charity Inevitably the real winner today were the children and all the family members

With the Family Fun Day almost upon us, tomorrow in fact, all eyes are turning to the diary and to the forthcoming Captains week. This kicks off with the club's annual Bacchus competition where for those that aren't aware, players play a mix of holes where at each hole they are required to enjoy a drink (alcoholic of course) , or sometimes two , maybe three before being able to play their shot at that hole. Our thanks go out to all those who have again kindly sponsored the playing holes. Our thoughts also go out to those brave souls actually participating, see you on the tee!

The clubs 125th anniversary celebrations really get started on the 6th July where a black tie summer ball like no other has been planned in order of this historic occasion. Full details of this members only event are on the clubs notice board. A huge amount of planning has gone in to this, with a first class menu befitting the occasion, the return of the wonderful Miss Vintage who will serenade us throughout the night and a chance to win a £100 cash prize followed by a truly magnificent auction. There are just 16 places left so if you love your club, then show your support by celebrating with other like minded members this historic occasion, but you had better be quick.

Following our published article on the clubs anniversary year in the New Shopper in March we have had two highly regarded national golf magazines, UK Club Golfer and Golf News, and their web sites publish details also. This can only be good for the club as we further promote our successes over the past 125 years.
