PICTURED; 9 Hole Cup Winner: CHRIS SANDFORD
Always played on ‘Ladies Club Championship’ day, the ‘9 Hole Cup’ is the opportunity for those Ladies who would struggle to compete effectively off the much longer ‘Blue tees’ over 27 holes to be part of the big day with their own Stableford competition over 9 holes & this year played over the Lake 9.
... Christine Sandford our Winner (pictured) picked up the coveted Trophy after carding an impressive 22 points, despite a ‘blob’ on the infamous Lake 2nd island green, but that did not put her off playing exceptional golf, finishing on the Lake 9th with a 4 pointer, the margin of her victory as it happens!
Looking obviously delighted in the picture, “I would too Christine if I could muster that many points off effectively 8 holes!” Well done!

PICTURED: 2018 Ladies Club Championship - Handicap Champion: LINDA WHAPHAM
The Ladies Club Championship is played over 27 holes off the ‘Blue tees’ with the Lake/River combination at 5450 yards par 70 providing the stiff challenge for the morning round and the long 3125 yard Valley 9 par 38, the afternoon conclusion to a tough day of golf, played this year in stifling heat.
... None of this phased our 2018 handicap Champion Linda Whapham (h/c 16), having won this event in 2008 and 2014 when played off the shorter ‘Red tees’ she obviously had the pedigree to challenge, but even she was surprised after a wonderful morning round to find she was only one shot off the Gross Club Championship contenders!
Linda was off to a quick start with birdies on two of the first three holes, but a front nine blip with back to back double bogeys mid round saw her turn in 44 for the front 9, and despite that set back she kept her concentration to card a magnificent back 9 of 38 just 4 over par & a Nett 66 for the 18 holes, to take a commanding lead into the last 9 holes over the Valley. Steady golf over the Valley saw her record a Nett 36 vs par of 38 to comfortably take the Ladies Handicap Championship, with Penny Cattaneo pipping Jan Richardson & Nicky Shuttleworth for second.

Pictured is the New ‘Ladies Club Champion’ Madelaine Harris who produced a stunning display of golf to overcome the challenges of reigning Champion – Jill Miles and 5 times Winner Sandy Fell.
In this 27 hole event, the morning 18 is played over the Lake /River combination and at 5450 yards a real test for our Ladies to contend with & the afternoon 9 over the 3125 yard Valley course, all played from the championship ‘Blue tees’.
... Maddy Harris (h/c 10) was a model of consistency over the first 18 holes and was tied for the lead with Sandy Fell (h/c 7), with the surprise package of Linda Whapham (h/c 16) playing out of her skin one shot away & defending Champion Jill Miles (h/c 10) a further 3 shots back.
What unfolded over the last 9 holes over the 3125 yard Valley 9, needed to be witnessed!
Maddy Harris went par, par, bogey, before embarking on a birdie fest over the next 3 holes, two pars later she was looking at producing a - 2 under Gross back 9 coming to the 9th 455 yard par 5, although at this stage no one in the club house knew that!
Sandy, Jill & Maddy all hit excellent tee shots followed by approaches that left them all 100yds in, Maddy went first and through the back of the green, Jill and Sandy came up just short, when Maddy took 4 to get down & Jill chipped on & holed the put, the frustration in Maddys face was evident & it looked like Jill had won, but it was the frustration of not finishing under par, as her level par 38 on the Valley 9 despite a double bogey last hole was more than good enough to seal her first ‘Club Championship’ after being Handicap Champion in 2016 & 2017. Jill Miles was always in contention and if not for early bunker trouble might have claimed her second victory, but in hitting a fine last 9 of 40 to take runners up spot, she put up a fine defense of her title, even if it was Maddys day!

PICTURED PHIL GRAY & BERTIE PACKHAM (Handicap Champion & Club Champion 2018)
Phil Gray playing off h/c 16 had been starting to find the consistency he desired leading up to the Championships, which made him one of the favourites (in the handicap stakes) going into this 36 hole event over two days 7th & 8th July, and was obviously very pleased with his Nett 67 opening round, only to find himself still 4 shots off the pace set by Sam Assefi (h/c 19) who shot a stunning Nett 63... in baking hot conditions. Sam then had a steady day two with a Nett 70 to finish 2nd overall in the Handicap Championships, but 3 shots back on Phil who carded a second round Nett 63 for a 10 under total of 130, parring the last 3 holes on both nines, as part of a fine display of golf.
It was much tenser in the Scratch Club Championship with Jon Osborne (h/c 5) carding a two over par Gross 72 in a fine display of golf on day one with a double bogey at the last costing him a level par round, but this was still enough to take a slim 1 shot lead over Bertie Packham (h/c 3) into Round 2.
Sundays round was described by spectators as a masterclass in ball striking for much of the round by both Gents with Berties birdie on the 4th River levelling the overall scores and a further birdie at the 6th River helping him turn in a one under par Gross 33 to hold the lead by two shots as the back 9 on the Valley awaited. Jon immediately hit back with a birdie of his own on the 1st Valley and then having a two at the par three 3rd Valley must have had him dreaming of glory, but Bertie, Club champion in 2016 & 2017 held his nerve parring the last three holes to win by 1 shot in his total of Gross 144 (73 R1 + 71 R2) & complete the ‘treble’ that has his name yet again added to the ‘Honour Boards’ at the tender age of just 16.

COMBINATION CRYSTAL 2018 Pictured are the victorious Rusper team of Dave Budden, Judith Marshall, Tracey Maughan & Steve Dowell.
As always this event proves a tricky affair for our Captain & Vice Captain both Ladies & Gents from our neighbouring courses as they have to tackle 36 holes in the day, with the Captain & Vice Captain of the Gentlemen playing ‘Betterball Stableford’ in the morning as do the Ladies Captain & Vice & then the two Captains join forces, as do the two Vic...e Captains, to play ‘Foursomes Stableford’ in the afternoon, with all four scores contributing to the team total.
The Rusper team had an outrageous 165 pts in 2017 from these combinations and whilst 2018’s score did not quite match those dizzy heights their combined total of 154 pts this time out was far too good for the rest of the teams to match.
The ground work was laid in the morning rounds particularly by Judith & Tracey who combined to get 46 pts over the Valley / River and this was then backed up by Dave & Steves consistent play to get 41 pts over Lake / River.
Afternoon scoring is always down on the morning round and often around the 30 pt mark, but buoyed by their morning lead the Captains & Vices of Rusper didn’t let their grasp on the trophy wane and both produced some of the better scores with their 34 & 33 points rounding off a fine victory.

There was a strong turnout amongst the Ladies section for the Pennington Cup, a Singing Hills ‘Honour Board’ competition played in Medal format and on this occasion won by Julie Kember who recorded a Nett 68 playing off Handicap 16. No wonder Julie looks so pleased, she has often gone close in the Club Championship, but this is her first recorded ‘Honour Board’ victory and she will have her name proudly added to the ‘Roll of Honour’. Julie started her round consistently ove...r the River nine throwing in a couple of Gross pars on R7 & R8 to turn in Gross 42, equaling that score on the back nine over the much longer (almost by 500 yards) Valley nine parring three and birdieing one of the last five holes to add to a birdie earlier on the back nine, carding a Gross 84 Nett 68 to win by 3 shots from ex Club Champion Sandy Fell who carded a very respectable Nett 71 playing off 7 for second place. Julies birdies came at the 275 yard par 4 Valley 2nd and 397 yard par 5 Valley 6th holes, adding the gloss to a fine round of golf!

With a record turnout for the 2018 Senior Team Open played in glorious sunshine this year all the betting suggest Slinfold always with a very strong entry would walk away having completed a treble, backing up wins in 2016 & 2017, but it was not to be, although they did sparkle in the pairs!
Cranleigh this time are our Champions and recorded a magnificent team score of 121pts! The Winning Cranleigh team pictured Captained by Derek Coward produced three betterball scores: 42 p...ts from Bob Owen & Leo Scheijde over the Valley/Lake 40 pts from Terry Tozer & Peter Symmonds over the Lake/River & 39 pts from Derek Coward & Nick Batchelor over the River/Valley.
No doubt Bob Owen who “birdied” the par five 9th on the Valley for 3 points will want to take the plaudits for that necessary extra point that saw them pip Ashford into second place, by just a single point and secure top of the range golf shoes for the whole team! Don’t the team all look very happy with the win, well apart from Captain Derek who takes these things all in his stride, although even he I think he would prefer the team to create a little more daylight between themselves and second place to preserve his nerves next year!

Well things are improving for the Singing Hills Junior Open, this year the Juniors only got rained on for the front nine of their round (off the white tees over the Valley & Lake courses) compared to 2017 when it rained all day! Yet again this did not put off a strong field of Juniors with ages from 8 to 17 and handicaps from 3 to 36 playing some wonderful golf.
With such a range of handicaps it was decided this year to break the Stableford competition into those 18 and over... handicap & those under 18 handicap with a best Gross as an additional prize. Winners: Bertie Packham – Singing Hills (h/cap 3) with a Gross 73 & winning a shirt. Tom Marchant – Hassocks (h/cap 25) with 44 points Stableford taking the 18 & over h/c cat. & Will Oats - Royal Eastbourne (h/c 14) with 39 points to take the under 18 h/c cat., both winning Golf Bags for their efforts. Will Oates finished with two 3 pointers on hole 17 & 18 to get him over the line, whilst Tom’s fine round included a 4 pointer on the (par 5) 4th Lake. Mention should be given to Etan Randall - East Sussex National who won in 2017 and was narrowly pipped this year in the new format despite hitting 40 points off 18 h/cap, 5 less than he played the year before and included an impressive 4 pointer on the 18th hole. Nearest the Pins - won by Nicholas Lyons – Lindfield & Bertie Packham – Singing Hills. As well as the main event there was a drive / chip / putt competition in age order: Over 15 Champion Nicholas Lyons – Lindfield (Chip: Jacob Roberts / Putt: Cameron Bates / Drive: Bertie Packham) with Nicholas himself launching a drive 288yds! 14/15 year olds Champion Andrew Jones – Cooden Beach (Chip: Andrew Jones / Putt: Will Oates / Drive: Baxter Atkins) Under 14s Champion Ethan Randal- ESN (Chip: Jake Bodie / Putt: Ronnie Packham / Drive: Jamie Burchell)
