Somerset House Description

Somerset House is London’s working arts centre and home to the UK’s largest creative community. Built on historic foundations, we are situated in the very heart of the capital.

Dedicated to backing newness, championing openness, nurturing creativity and empowering ideas, our cultural programme is ambitious in scope. We insist on relevance, but aren’t afraid of irreverence, and are as keen on entertainment as enrichment. We embrace the biggest issues of our times but are equally committed to the delicate task of oxygenating new work by emerging artists.
Where else can you spend an hour ice-skating while listening to a specially commissioned sound piece by a cutting edge artist?

It is this creative tension—the way we harness our heritage, put the too-often overlooked on our central stage and use our neo-classical backdrop to showcase groundbreaking contemporary culture—that inspires our programme. Old and new, history and disruption, art and entertainment, high-tech and homemade, combined with the fact that we are home to a constantly shape-shifting working creative community: this is our point of difference. It is what we are proud of. And it is what makes the experience of visiting or working in Somerset House inspiring and energizing, urgent and exciting.

Went to the Perfume Experience and thoroughly enjoyed it.

On arrival my ticket was on my phone, no problem gave my name to the very helpful girl on reception and she printed it out straight away.

Liked the innovative way the perfumes were presented, even though I didn't find a new perfume to fall in love with, I particularly liked painting and having my photo taken with a soft toy (I hate having my photo taken as a rule but it did make me laugh) and the end informative section being able to ask questions and try out different elements of the perfumes was good too.

I have never been to Somerset House before, a beautiful building, I sat in the courtyard and ate my lunch in the sunshine with the beautiful fountains afterwards.

All in all a lovely informative very pleasant experience, I will definitely be going again!

Thank you x

Went to see Bhaji on the Beach as part of the Film 4 series. Never been before and always wanted to visit Somerset House. Wasn't disappointed!

Staff lovely. Easy to get to and wonderful surroundings to watch a film. Didn't buy food. As we brought a picnic. Toilets (us ladies need to know) in abundance and clean.

If you haven't got one, invest in the backrests - not cheap at £7.50 for cardboard- but robust and reusable and does the job brilliantly.

Did get very cold as film starts at 9pm so bring blanket and cushion if you don't want a numb bum!

Great atmosphere, great staff, great film, all under the stars. And some of film's stars turned up too!

User

We went to see the Outdoor Screening of Jaws and Deliverence. Loved it! A little research reading previous years reviews and we were well prepared for the stone floors and the cool evening once the sun went down.

I would like to commend the event organisers. It felt like they were really passionate about the films and really wanted us all to have an amazing experience.

I thought that it was something really different and for £20 what more do you want. The surroundings were of course magnificent and the atmosphere was happy and friendly. Extra security at the entrance was welcome and the guys themselves were friendly and relaxed.

People complaining about prices of food and drink once inside should remind themselves that this is central! And you were encouraged to bring your own food and drink!

I hope that these events will continue and will definitely be back for more.

I will always remember last night! We watched The Philadelphia Story and it was delightful. There's a stone pavement, I found it honestly fine. You will very probably need to buy a backrest that you can find at the merchandise stand. They're under 10£ but i think they massively improve the experience. Bring over a picnic hamper full of nice food, relax and enjoy some wonderful movies in a magical scenery.

I went to see the philadelphia story as part of the film 4 festival. I loved the whole experience because it matched my expectations.

Before I went, I read the Somerset house website so that I knew exactly what to expect. Other reviewers have said they did not know it was a stone floor. A little research would have revealed this.

The food prices are also on the website; so I knew it was £8 for a slice of pizza. I am not prepared to pay that so took a picnic. No crockery, no glass and no sharp knives - as advised on the website.

The website also suggests you bring blankets, and cushions. I took a blanket but in the end, I did pay £7.50 for a cardboard backrest. The price was ridiculous, for what amounts to a piece of cardboard, but they were incredibly strong and surprisingly comfortable and effective.

I can't comment on the food service because I didn't try to buy anything!!!

My recommendation is to take a picnic, arrive early to get a nice spot, bring a blanket to sit on and another for cover to stay warm, choose a great film and you'll have a great time.

Some people brought carrymats, cushions and light sleeping bags. I am sure that enhanced the experience, but for me, that's a lot to pack just to watch a film!

I wanted a picnic, followed by a great film in stunning surroundings, under the cover of stars. That's exactly what I got, hence the 5 stars.

Hello

Kind of desperate, sorry to bother you on your facebook page..

Have been searching for hours for an artist that you exposed at the Pick Me Up festival in 2016..

Could you maybe give me the list of all the artists that were present at the event so I can maybe try to find it on my own ?

In my memories, the artist was making art with electricity.

I remember that he/she was using a dome and static electricity or the pulse of the heart to make art on paper.

Each art was unique...

Desperate to find the artist so as to contact him

thank you

Great venue for open air cinema. Atmosphere was good and the film (The Philadelphia Story), made it a lovely light hearted evening. We actually read the instructions and brought our own backrests and food. It could be an expensive night, but it's entirely up to you. We'd looked forward to going there for a number of years and were delighted with it. Lights, screen and sound system were fantastic.

User

Wonderful setting and great to see good movies in an open air environment.

Well managed and plenty of space for everyone.

Down side, I watched a double bill. After the first movie the munchies set in. Unfortunately the hot food and drinks had shut. There hadn't been any notification about this and I believe an opportunity was missed to make some extra cash from those staying for the second film.

User

We watched the skaters for a while, which put us in a festive mood before eating at Tom's Kitchen. The food and service were both good and the atmosphere relaxed and unhurried.

Love Somerset house as a venue and a hub for art, music, culture, film, photography! I've been to many Somerset house 'things', SKATE, exhibitions, gigs but in the 7yrs of living in London not managed to get tickets to the film 4 summer series until now!

Went last night to watch Bhaji on the Beach and loved it! Great atmosphere in a lovely setting, the weather was spot on. We made sure we printed our tickets before as why bother with the faf of collection, we brought our own food, bought a couple of hot drinks and enjoyed the film!!

Only thing I'd do differently is bring something comfier to sit on and wear something a bit warmer... was way to optimistic about re: summer sun!

User

It was the first time I've been to Somerset House, I went to the film 4 festival. The toilets were clean and I didn't have to wait as there were many. I took my own food so didn't need any food while there, the drinks were reasonably priced as it's London (I expected them to be way more expensive). My only problem was that I turned up late and the best places were taken haha. But I now know what to expect, so will be more prepared next time if I go again. Beautiful surroundings too! :)

User

I went to see /smell Perfume Exhibition at Somerset House just before closes. It was following the similar perfume trial or workshop that you sniff a smell/perfume in each room. Setting was hint and how each perfume designer/perfumier convey images or atmosphere.

I was wondering how curators chose such some distinct, some disgusting perfume. Like most of fashion designers that produce perfume, they have almost selfish intention to be worn by the selected customers. Some have unique and weird ingredients that wearers and certain people can smell and sniff out invisible signals only perfume could attract. Unusual and enjoyable experience you forget everything in outside world. I want to make my own perfume again!

User

Beautiful building and galleries - a real treat architecturally.

Galleries have displays of wide ranging art - there really is someting for everyone.

Staff all approachable and helpful. Excellent foc locker system too so no need to drag large bags of shopping or coats around.

Downside : galleries and shop just too hot to be comfortable.

User

Well I've been wanting to go to Somerset house for the film 4 festival for ages so me and my other half went yesterday and it wasn't what i was expecting. We took our own food and drink as we new the prices would be high but they was horrendous. A steward moved us two inches from where we was which was stupid and put someone next to us where we then didn't have any space or room when there was no point as there was more room behind us, although we arrived early to get a good seat but the people who was put next to us turned up late so because of that me and my other half was uncomfortable and rathered annoyed throughout the rest of the night. What was the point In getting there early when you can turn up half hour before the film and take what you want. In the end me and my other half left with a lot of other people who was there half way through the film as it started to rain heavy although we had come prepared for that. The customer service was awful, bar staff was rude and when I asked a steward for information she got moody and gave me a dirty look. The setting of the place and the film was great but I don't think I'll be going back again. Customer service needs to be improved and some sort of protection from the rain as the tickets was not cheap!

User

There needs to be an honest discussion about customer service here.... opted to collect tickets at venue then told on arrival no wifi so couldn't print tickets so a charge would be made for access to our tickets from ticketmaster (I know we didn't understand this either) then shouted at (!) through security, went to the bar queue and joined others that were allowed through some barriers by a steward to be shouted at again I wasn't allowed through the barriers (pointed out we only followed the people in front and was told 'I know them ' and then at the end of the concert went to the toilet and got shouted at again because I hadn't followed the one way system they had just put in place!!! Foster the People concert was ok but after an evening of being shouted at i won't return if I don't have to

Great work Somerset house and Film 4

It was the first time I've been to Somerset House, I went to the film 4 festival. The toilets were clean and I didn't have to wait as there were many. I took my own food so didn't need any food while there, the drinks were reasonably priced as it's London (I expected them to be way more expensive). My only problem was that I turned up late and the best places were taken haha. But I now know what to expect, so will be more prepared next time if I go again. Beautiful surroundings too! :)

I haven’t received my tickets to an event which is tonight.
