South Cambs Motors - Now Closed Description

South Cambs Motors has been open since the 1930's. In the early 1950's our family took the business on and we've been servicing cars at our garage in Melbourn ever since. We are also an MOT Testing Station and undertake car repairs.

Our expert and friendly mechanics will only proceed once you have approved our quotation and they will only carry out work that they believe is in the best interests of your vehicle.

We take great pride in our work, and old-fashioned values such as attention to detail and honest and friendly service are close to our hearts. We will also collect and return your car.

Many of our customers have been using South Cambs Motors for years, so why not give us a try? We guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the impending closure of South Cambs Motors in Melbourn.
The garage has been operating from the site since the 1930s but has been in our family since the 1950s when Bill Dash bought the business from Jack Wedd. The decision to close hasn’t been an easy one as it will affect so many people.
In recent years, car technology has changed considerably with the digital age. We have been finding it increasingly difficult t...o compete with the main dealers who have the latest digital software tools and updates that modern cars require. We have also been victim to several break ins which has stretched the financial viability of the business as lots of our vital equipment was stolen.
We have been very lucky with such a loyal workforce, some who have stayed with us for many years including the late Sid Hinkins and Fred Dye, Len Saunders, Bob Holcombe, and more recently Mick Diemer, Alastair Macdougall and Dave Day.
We are so very grateful to the Melbourn community for the support, friendship and loyalty that you have shown to the garage over the years. There have been lots of good times and nice memories of the past.
South Cambs Motors will cease trading from Friday 20th December 2019.

We received a welcome visitor today at South Cambs Motors. 91 year old Cyril Kenzie worked at the garage in the forties and is full of tales of the garage from a free and easy time before the motor trade became regulated.

Stuck for a Mother’s Day present next week? Why not treat your mum’s car to a full service at South Cambs Motors? Flowers and nice lunches are overrated... 😊

As we start to wind down for Christmas at South Cambs Motors, it is always nice to reflect on the past going back to the 1950’s when the Dash family started running the garage. The world has changed greatly in that time but the business hasn’t really changed very much itself retaining the same old fashioned feel and personal customer service. We consider this as a time to remember the good times, our former loyal and long serving mechanics and staff such as the late Sid Hinkins, Len Saunders and Fred Dye and the customers, lots of greatly missed characters who have all made the garage what we know and love today. There is a lot of history here.
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from us all. Thank you for your custom. ❄️🎅

One of the privileges of being a small village garage is that we from time to time see unusual vehicles. We were delighted to welcome this elderly duchess, an Austin 12/4 which was first registered in 1936. She came in for a thorough check and we are delighted to report that she now has a valid MOT and is fit for purpose for the coming year.

There are some big changes coming on 20th May 2018 to MOT testing, with new defect types, stricter rules for diesel car emissions, and some vehicles over 40 years old becoming exempt. We would like all our customers to be aware of this.

Sadly, in the early hours of this morning we were broken into again. If anyone noticed any people acting suspiciously or noted any distinctive vehicles in the vicinity of the High Street near Leech's or on Station Road, it would be very helpful if you could pass these observations onto the Police. We have spent the day getting ourselves back on our feet and we really appreciate the continued support of our loyal customers.

Government makes £35m from people who forget their MOT tests!
Drivers forgetting to renew their MoT on time have been fined in total more than £35million in the past five years, research by Carbuyer has found.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) shares its MoT data with the police, who in return use ANPR cameras to catch drivers with expired MoTs.
... Go to https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-informatio n-from-dvla to see when your MOT expires.
Book your MOT in on 01763 260246 and speak to Alistair who will add your MOT expiry details to our system.

South Cambs Motors has been owned by the Dash Family since 1955 with Terry Dash, the current proprietor at the helm since 2000. We have some great staff and take pride in giving an old fashioned service, backed up by a modern workshop.

We are all very saddened to hear of the passing of John Gipson who worked at South Cambs Motors during the 1930’s. He opened his own workshop at the rear of the British Queen pub in Meldreth and then bought some land at Woolpack Way, which later became Meldreth Garage.
John had some wonderful stories concerning South Cambs Motors which fortunately were captured on disc by the Meldreth Local History Group. http://www.meldrethhistory.org.uk/page/me ldreth_garage
John was also well known as a celebrated bell ringer. He was a well - respected figure in the area and will be sorely missed. RIP.

We are pleased to be listed in the 'Good Garage Guide' on www.honestjohn.co.uk
Honest John writes in the Daily Telegraph every Saturday and gives excellent advice on owning, buying and selling cars.
