Max's hock is badly fractured (vet stopped counting at 10 in the calcaneus bone). Surgery tomorrow morning. All going well, home Thursday night and then the battle starts. He has to be housed in a crate for 8 weeks recuperation. How am I going to explain that to a hyper working collie??
Do you know a child who might benefit? We've recently become more aware of the benefits of our clipped sheepskins. Read about the heartwarming instincts of two grandmothers at www.southdownduvets.com/what-is-it-about- wool-the-story-of…/
Some folk say the sounds of hay making irritate. If it’s not the cutter, it’s the Tedder. If it’s not the Tedder then is the baler all chugging away. I welcome the sounds with a deep sense of security and happiness knowing that come winter, I will have enough food for my lovely Southdown sheep. So whether it’s another beast from the east, a nerd from the north, a sod from the south or a witch from the west - bring it on! Me and my girls will be ready.

Love the quilt bit Steph! A Southdown Wool Pillow will soon be on its way to you! Our two runners up, who each win a skein of Southdown wool, are Brenda Brown with 'A Huddle of Cuddles' and Leslie Fravel with 'A Lullaby of Lambs'. Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter the competition and keep a look out for the next one!
Our lambs have been having fun in the barn when the guinea fowl went out of their way to tease them.
Lambing ended last night on a high. Dawes (10 days overdue) produced 2 lovely ewe lambs. Textbook presentation and delivery. Lambs bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
We have 2 ewes left to produce 3 lambs. thats 70 lambs since 30th April. No wonder we are all staggering around looking glazed.

Another twin muddle. At 5am Fezzy presented me with 2 back legs and a head all at once. No can do Fezzy! Lube and waterproofs on and twins safely delivered (after some shoving and pushing).
Most complicated lambing ever yesterday. Couldnt fathom what was what. Eventually Bryony managed to get first out but we called vet for 2nd. Turns out both lambs were facing right way but both had head down between front legs and 2nd lamb had her legs over shoulder of 1st so you can imagine the muddle. Vet said he didnt expect either ewe lambs to survive but they have and mum is doing just fine. Made of tough stuff these little Southdowns...
New born Buttercup has her Mum's brown nose. They are snuggled up together watching yet more snow...
First lamb arrived 3am. Upside-down and backwards but all well and very sweet.
Little ewe Basson is so ready to lamb. Nothing yet but she is beginning to prolapse. I am reminded of all those old wives tales about how to bring on labour in humans. Somehow I dont think Basson will appreciate a vindaloo and car ride down a bumpy road! Bless her, she is so uncomfortable
Two ewes starting to look like they could lamb any day now. A bit premature but then there are always a few early off the starters block. With more snow forecast for tomorrow I am going to keep the flock in the barn. They don't mind - just settle into the warm dry straw.
Although you may feel that all sheep are roughly equal, the wool they produce is not. Consequently, not all wool bedding is the same and it's easy to make a costly mistake. Sign up at www.southdownduvets.com for your FREE Guide to Buying a Wool Duvet.
Here’s Max, the collie, genetically programmed to go out and herd sheep regardless of anything. Unstoppable, fearless, intrepid.....
We bought these duvets for ourselves and all of our asthma-challenged grandchildren. Great investment.
