About Spana

SPANA is the leading charity for the worldŌĆÖs working animals. www. spana.org

Spana Description

In the winter of 1921, Kate Hosali and her daughter Nina embarked on a voyage to North Africa in search of sunshine. Little did they know it was a journey that would last a lifetime.

Their adventure took them to remote towns and villages across the region. But what they found horrified them.

Kate and Nina saw malnourished donkeys and mules buckling under the weight of huge loads; camels struggling across the hard stony ground between Algeria and Tunisia with nothing more than piece of old rubber sewn into the pads of their feet; and cart animals with terrible wounds caused by the repeated rubbing of ill-fitting harnesses.

Back in Britain, Kate couldnŌĆÖt escape thoughts of this ŌĆśsea of neglected sufferingŌĆÖ. So in 1923, she founded SPANA.

With great courage and dedication, Kate and Nina set about the job of creating a more compassionate world for working animals.

Their pioneering spirit and unwavering passion continues to inspire SPANAŌĆÖs work around the world to this day.

Today, our dedicated vets and technicians treat hundreds of thousands of donkeys, horses, mules, camels and elephants around the globe every year. Alongside this, we build expertise among vets and promote humane care by animal owners. We also reach tens of thousands of children through our education programme, teaching respect and compassion for animals.

Your Marrakech team are efficient. Earlier today I reported a badly injured street dog and within a couple of hours the dog was collected near Palais Bahia. It was a bit of a wait and I had to follow the dog around so I can update the team on its location, but I know with limited resources they have done their best. Thanks for making a difference.

What the world needs now...more groups like Spana!

User

These animals need love and attention . They have worked so hard! They need respect and care when they are old IŌĆÖll .

User

The reason I loved it is because they help animals get away from abusers and bad hoarding (I think hoarding) because) issues, like this need to be stopped the places they need to go to should be inspected before taking the animals there..In my opinion this is a serial animal death that is slowly increasing to the 1000's who agrees?

User

Thank you to Bubka for showing us round this morning. The work you do is brilliant and it is lovely to see that there is someone watching out for all the animals in Marrakech.

User

Thank you all for doing such a big help to the poor animals in the poor countries from Africa....

User

SPANA does enormously valuable work for animals, directly improving their welfare as well as training local people as animal nurses, vets, harness makers and farriers and in other essential skills. People learn to look after their donkeys, horses, camels and other working animals better, improving their health, welfare and their value to their owners. SPANA creates a virtuous circle: there is still a lot of work to be done throughout the world. I am proud to be a supporter.

User

My boyfriend volunteered for SPANA in Marrakech and I was able to come over and see the team treat the animals for all sorts of conditions from wounds to colic, while at the same time encouraging the owners to take better care of their animals and giving great advice. Finally, I was very happy to see them having tours for school children to nurture curiosity and empathy towards animals. They do brilliant and important work and I am grateful for having seen it. Please donate if you can, your money will be much needed!

User

Just been to Marrakesh to visit SPANA, see the fantastic work they do and to make a donation in person.

Absolutely outstanding

User

I love the work you do, and after making a donation on behalf of my beloved horse who passed away a few days ago you sent me a wonderful message. The message really made me feel better, and it really showed that you guys read through your donations. Thank you so much for everything!

User

I love any organization, charity, etc., that helps animals, and these working animals really deserve it, as a lot of them are not well looked after and grossly overworked and underfed. It is a good job there are people who can make the lives of these poor souls a bit easier. No living being should suffer, in an ideal world and since this is far from being an ideal world, I am so thankful that there are compassionate and caring people like you who are in the position of being able to travel and go to so much trouble, to help. You truly are selfless people.

Any organization that raises the awareness of any creatures sensitivities and well-being, it is worth supporting. In the long run, humans will begin to see that there are other ways to get what they want, without exploiting any animal.
