Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them. This makes them want to share with others who are not so fortunate.
The tradition of celebrating Harvest Festival in churches began in 1843, when the Reverend Robert Hawker invited parishioners to a special thanksgiving service at his church at Morwenstow in Cornwall. This led to the custom of decorating churches with home-grown produce for the Harvest Festival service.
The traditional ways of celebr...ating the harvest still survive today. Nowadays, children also take gifts of fruit and vegetables to church and present them during the harvest service whilst the harvest hymn 'We plough the fields and scatter' is sung.
Parishoners also bring food from home to the Harvest Festival Service. After the service, the food that has been put on display is donated to the local foodbank for the benefit of those who are finding it hard to make ends meet in these austere times.
After the service there will be a Harvest Festival buffet in the Narthex. All are welcome.
"And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field"
Exodus 23:16

The Act of Remembrance occurs at 11.00 am at the Parish War Memorial.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning... We will remember them.
Afterward the service we will host a community event to remember those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms.

Today, members of the PCC are visiting Aquilate Hall in Staffordshire, to view their ground source heating installation, to see how a similar installation may be of use to the church in reducing our costs and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Parts of the north lawn have now been seeded, following the removal of overgrown shrubs in February.
We will be delighted to receive donations of shrubs to go in the borders between the buttresses.

Today, the church architect, Mark Evans, was on-site to carry out the Quinquennial Inspection.
Within the Church of England every church building must be inspected by an architect or chartered building surveyor approved by the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) every five years.
This regular system of review is designed to ensure that church buildings are kept in good repair.

Well done, Cynthia and Stephen.

On this Rogation Sunday bring your gifts of shrubs to church for planting out around the church.
Following the recent tidying of the church grounds, for our 150th anniversary, we now invite parishioners to donate shrubs for restocking the church flower borders.
As it is also Godparents' Sunday, why not plant a shrub to commemorate your godchild or godparent?

This church is a massive part of my life, my family history. My Grandfather worked here for the best part of 40 years; my parents were married here, myself and my siblings christened here, my grandparents funerals were conducted here and my grandads ashes are buried in the grounds (with special permission)..

My childhood memories of rolling up the carpet and putting the candles out after services.... Darby and Joan in the church hall, I could go on... very precious times... I'd love a picture of the front of the church if anyone has one to post on here..

This church is VERY poignant and is a HUGE part of me. I used to live near by in the late great YWCA Alexandra Residential Club on good old Norfolk Road. However I am deeply saddened to have walked past there in the last couple of weeks to witness the demonstration of the late great YWCA. Dating back to late 1988 when I was 20 years old I used to take frequent walks here to St Augustine's which is VERY special. I now don't live too far away in good old Smethwick in a nice house which indeed I am so thankful for. I endeavour to start coming back here to beloved St Augustine's as I have been recently PURELY to carry on down memory lane. Though I am not religious I still love to sit here in the complete silence right in the middle of this beautiful church. Wow you could hear a pin drop. I sometimes have a play on the piano not far from the entrance of this nice church. I'd like to join you here for the Xmas Carols this year. I have watched a video on YouTube of men wringing hand bells playing silent night and I am EXTREMELY impressed. See you soon and it would be nice to meet other fellow locals.

St Augustine'sChurch, Edgbaston, Birmingham stands beautifully central in a quiet, scenic & serene location. This Church which is a Grade ll listed building is fine example of great period architecture. I enjoyed my visit, having been greated once settled in, with a cup of coffee by the keeper. A great place to praise, worship, sing & film whilst absorbing the internal beauty of this timeless masterpiece.
