About St James'S Church, Sussex Gardens

The Parish Church of Paddington

St James'S Church, Sussex Gardens Description

At St James’s, we exist to worship almighty God and to serve the people of this Parish in whatever way we can. We do this with all the joy, hope and love that comes from faith in Jesus Christ.

As well as a place of prayer and worship, St. James's is an amazing concert venue with an incredible setting and acoustic, and is increasingly used for music and drama performances.

The church is open every day (with very rare exceptions), and Mass is celebrated every weekday at 6. 30pm.

The focus of our life as a parish is the Sung Mass on Sunday at 10. 30am.

Welcome to 2019! There is a tradition of starting the new Year with the ancient prayer 'Veni Creator Spiritus'. Why not offer it today in a quiet moment, and seek the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit for your life, for the Church and for the world?
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art, ... who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.
Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight.
Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of thy grace. Keep far from foes, give peace at home: where thou art guide, no ill can come.
Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but One, that through the ages all along, this may be our endless song:
Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

We praise Thee, O God, for Thy glory displayed in all the creatures of the earth... We thank Thee for the mercies of blood, for Thy redemption by blood. For the blood of Thy martyrs and saints... Shall enrich the earth, shall create holy places. For wherever a saint has dwelt, wherever a martyr has given his blood for the blood of Christ, There is holy ground, and the sanctity shall not depart from it Though armies trample over it, though sightseers come with guidebooks looking over it; From where the western seas gnaw at the coast of Iona, To the death in the desert, the prayer in forgotten places, by the broken imperial column, From such ground springs that which forever renews the earth Though it is forever denied. Therefore, O God, we thank Thee Who has given such blessing in Canterbury. - from 'Murder in the Cathedral' T. S. Eliot

Gracious Father, who gave the first martyr Stephen grace to pray for those who took up stones against him: grant that in all our sufferings for the truth we may learn to love even our enemies... and to seek forgiveness for those who desire our hurt, looking up to heaven to him who was crucified for us, Jesus Christ, our mediator and advocate, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

St Nicholas, tired of too many letters from spoiled brats, decides to pay a visit to teach three of the worst offenders the true meaning of Christmas.

O Emmanuel, our king and our lawgiver, the hope of the nations and their Saviour: Come and save us, O Lord our God.

O King of the nations, and their desire, the cornerstone making both one: Come and save the human race, which you fashioned from clay.

O Morning Star, splendour of light eternal and sun of righteousness: Come and enlighten those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.

O Key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel; you open and no one can shut; you shut and no one can open: Come and lead the prisoners from the prison house, those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.
