“I joined Standard Chartered as Financial Markets International Graduate in 2015 and my first role in the bank was with the FX sales team in Singapore. Looking back, I never thought I would end up in Technology, but 4 years on, here I am with SC Ventures, a business unit within the bank that looks at driving innovation, building disruptive ventures and making investments into FinTechs. I feel privileged to be part of a team that has set out to rewire the DNA in banking.
As a...n IG, you get the amazing opportunity to explore various roles, which I think is the best part of the programme – Just knowing about a particular role can be very different from when you’re actually doing the role itself. My advice to young graduates is to always have an open mind because you never know where it might lead you to.” Tatyana Van Der Horst, IG alumni, Singapore

“The International Graduate (IG) program thus far has featured many positive experiences. Standard Chartered Bank is filled with highly skilled finance professionals eager to mentor junior talent, and get them prepared to contribute to the bank’s goals in meaningful and tangible ways; my personal experience has led me to find two mentors within my division that have guided me through my career trajectory while simultaneously teaching me the technical skills necessary for succ...ess. Due to the programs unrivalled breadth, I have also found other mentors that have exposed me to different areas of the bank, which has given me a wholistic understanding of the business.
The initial four-week training in Shanghai proved to be a valuable component of my learning process. I met an incredibly diverse group of people from nearly every part of the world that has provided me with a network of peers in several different regions that I can rely on and reach out to whenever needed.” – Ryan Jones, 2018 IG, US #InternationalGraduateProgramme #StandardCharteredBank #Goodhappenshere

“I joined the 2017 International Graduate (IG) Programme within Transaction Banking, Tanzania. The Programme began with one-month training in Shanghai, which equipped me with the necessary knowledge to comfortably slide into the Transaction Banking world. Once I returned to my home country, the hands-on experience and knowledge gained from talented and experienced individuals in different teams has supported me to shape my career within the Bank. Further, I have seen examples... of inspirational women within the Bank who have been great role models. It has nourished me to become the woman I am today, who inspires to achieve her goals each day, balances work, education and personal life by living the balance for better agenda of the Bank.” – Sapna Asher, 2017 IG, Tanzania #InternationalGraduateProgramme #StandardCharteredBank #Goodhappenshere

“Personally, the International Graduate (IG) Program experience surpassed my expectations. The program consists of 4 weeks induction in Shanghai, China, followed by an 18-month rotation across different departments before being deployed to a permanent position in the bank. Induction was challenging and fun. The extensive training provided during the induction ensures we can succeed in the banking world, learn about relevant developments in the sector such as the use of artificial intelligence and blockchain. It was a great networking experience with IGs from over 30 countries and I truly made friends for life.” - Elham Alsharif, 2018 IG, UAE

“A career in banking was never part of ‘the plan’…and yet, here I am, 8 years later...and loving it. So what makes an International Graduate decide to build their career at Standard Chartered? The people. The diversity. The challenge.
As an International Graduate in Audit, I covered Financial Markets in Qatar, Subsidiary Governance in Ghana and Financial Crime in India. I worked with colleagues from across the world who challenged my thinking, encouraged me to take on assignments I thought I couldn’t possibly do. I also supported the Goal programme in awarding grants to community-led initiatives to support the financial education of women in our markets.
If you want the opportunities of exploring different roles, different products, different markets, this is very much on offer at Standard Chartered Bank.” – Rebecca Fay, 2011 IG, UK

On 4 March, a group of 20 students from Ivey Business School, Canada visited our eXellerator lab in Hong Kong. Students toured around the venue and had the opportunity to listen to presentations by Carol Hung (Chief Information Officer Hong Kong), Paul Wan (Head of Risk & Control, CIO office Hong Kong) and SC Ventures colleagues. They shared with students about the business initiatives and the innovation journey Standard Chartered is currently on as part its digital transform...ation.

“I had the pleasure of attending a recent talk by Daniel Hanna, Global Head of Sustainable Finance and Global Head of Public Sector & Development Organisations who spoke on sustainable finance. He spoke about the increasing focus on sustainability and impact investing. Standard Chartered has newly introduced blue bonds that channel investments towards social goals that has been set out by the United Nations. The session was truly an eye opener, to learn about the market dev...elopments in this space. As an incoming International Graduate and a millennial investor with a drive to invest sustainable, I am excited to contribute to furthering the initiatives in this space.” - Hannah Chew, Incoming 2019 IG, Singapore

“During my internship in Global Banking, I tried to speak to as many people as possible about their roles and how they got to where they are today. Many of them had been International Graduates with the Bank and hearing their stories and seeing their success made me even more motivated to earn my spot in the program. After my internship I was eager to start my journey with the International Graduate Programme. The International Induction Programme brought together IGs from a...ll over the world to hear from senior leaders at the Bank. A variety of people spoke about different opportunities we may not have heard of and how career progression is not always linear. The growth continued upon my return to the US as I then embarked on my business rotations. Despite my initial trepidation, the rotations have been instrumental to my development here at the Bank. I have been able to meet colleagues from across the Bank and learn more about what they do. I realized that despite my initial thoughts about where I would like to deploy, I have more options than I even knew existed.” – Meghan Dunne, 2018 IG, US Find out more about our Programmes at https://on.sc.com/2HPKPH5 #InternationalGraduateProgramme #InternshipProgramme #Goodhappenshere

Group CEO, Bill Winters met with 2018 IGs in his recent visit to Taiwan and shared stories of his early career journey and encouraged the IGs not to be afraid of making mistakes. "We were able to share what we liked most about the Bank and expressed areas where improvements can be made. One of the great things about Standard Chartered is how the Bank forms strong partnerships with technology companies like Ant Financial and Siemens so we can become a younger and more tech-sa...vvy Bank. And how we can improve our journey to simplify complicated banking systems, so we can continue to provide the best experience for our clients. Bill also answered questions regarding the Groups’ recent investments and how he values Taiwan as an important market, and it truly encouraged us to bravely pursue an exponential growth at the Bank!"
"It was a distinct honour to learn from Bill's career, his outlook for the future, and how Standard Chartered continues to evolve on its 150 plus years journey. Through the innovative initiatives including Project Dragon, we will be amongst both the worlds’ oldest and youngest bank, and continue to make an impact in our markets." – 2018 IGs, Taiwan

“It has been the greatest pleasure to welcome all Belt & Road athletes to Hong Kong, and to kick start this phenomenal journey in my home town
4 years ago on my first year as an IG with the bank, I was cheering for our leaders at the spectators' stand. This year, I have the honour to participate in the Leaders Cup and run alongside all our regional legends. I would never have dreamt of this all happening a few years back but I do believe everyone's path is paved to lead to so...mewhere greater than one's imagination.
We were greeted by waves of blue and green upon arrival at the Wan Chai Sports Ground on the 17th Feb morning and as we were running in Causeway Bay, passer-by’s yelled "add oil!" and greeted us with thumbs up with great big smiles, the marathon has brought our community even closer and it is the sense of local unity and pride which makes Hong Kong such an incredible and unique place.
On this note, I shall carry the Hong Kong magic to the 44 countries we will visit over 90 days, highlighting the important role we can play in the upcoming future and will strive to make HK and Standard Chartered Bank proud” – Serena Leung, 2014 IG, Hong Kong #BeltandRoad #OneBeltOneRoadOneBank #InternationalGraduateProgramme #Goodhappenshere https://on.sc.com/2TI8Eam

“I participated in the recent Taipei Standard Chartered Charity Marathon to raise public awareness and pay attention to the rights of people with visual impairment. As I ran through the crowds, I felt proud seeing my fellow colleagues running and guiding our VI runners. At Standard Chartered, we are better together” –Andy Fang, 2018 IG, Taiwan

“The summer internship programme is a fantastic opportunity to gain first-hand experience of a stimulating and diverse environment. The people I met throughout the internship were incredibly friendly, and always willing to help, and so I felt fully supported throughout.
One of my favourite memories was the volunteering I took part in, for Pride in London, and also at the Ronald MacDonald house with the other interns. It was a rewarding experience and another great chance to ...experience the ethos of Standard Chartered Bank reflected in the work they do ... ‘Good happens here’. I very much look forward to returning for the 2019 IG Programme.” – Laura Orsi, 2018 Intern, UK

“I joined the 2018 International Graduate Programme within Retail Banking. The last 5 months has undoubtedly been one of the most fruitful experiences of my life. I started off with an Induction Programme in Shanghai, where I was privileged to connect with my IG cohort from over 25 countries. This was quite a rewarding experience that truly reflected the Bank’s commitment to embracing and celebrating diversity in the workplace. We all strongly felt part of one large global fa...mily that shared the same set of valued behaviours.
Everyone at the local office too, no matter how senior or junior, has been welcoming and extremely supportive. Whether it is your first day or the 10th year at the Bank, they consider any form of contribution - big or small, equally valuable and constantly encourage participation. A diverse and inclusive work environment of this nature fosters creativity and innovation and I am grateful to be a part of an organization which realises just that.” – Jayanee Gunawardena, 2018 IG, Sri Lanka.
