I think this is the first time we’ve ever sold Spalted Beech planks. These are all 1” and have been planed on both faces. Buying planks over the phone is never easy and we can’t send full lengths with our courier but if you’d really like one and can’t get to us I’m sure there’s something we can do to help.

Perfect day today; a new delivery of Zebrano, Paduak, Purpleheart and Sapele and my Deputy Editor yet again trying to influence the content of our next catalogue. It will be a week or so before we blank up some of the new timber and three months before the new catalogue goes out, but with 8 extra pages next year, I need to get the bulk of it done this month.

Big week at Upper Farm! Our Dutch barn was erected in 1954 with an expected life of 25 years. 64 years on, the roof structure is still very sound but the concrete uprights have blown (and we might have bumped them a few times) so we are having them replaced with galvanised steel. Ii works out that we have been restoring a different old building every couple of years over the last twenty five but this is the biggest job so far and one of the last. For now . . .

It’s 22 years ago today since we opened the shop! Every day we welcome new customers and continue to welcome those back who’ve been with us from the beginning. Thank you for all of your support, from all the team here, Dave, Janet, Pete, Mike, Sadie and Gordon.

Just a quick note to let you all know that if you’re visiting the shop between today (30/7) and the 10th of August we have a road closure. It’ll only affect you if you’re coming from the A256 direction, but if you follow the diversions you’ll be fine. If you do get lost please give us a call on 01304 366360.

We do a lot on the farm and around the shop for the wildlife and hedgehogs are one of our favourites. Janet has counted and marked over 16 this year. This little family (mother on the left) are living under our kiln. Turn up your sound to here them eating 🙂 #hedgehogs

Mike has just finished planing up these oak slats for a garden bench a customer is refurbishing....I might just do my own one of these days.

We don’t usually do Holly, but we bought some as a parcel from Somerset. But don’t get too excited just yet as it’s going to take 3 years to dry whilst we try our best to keep it white.

Saturday was our last club sawmill demo of the current season when we hosted East Surrey Woodturners and a few of our regular customers. We milled a small but interest walnut and later a small Norway maple log for the club members to take away and dry for turning. Like the Sandon club a few weeks ago, the East Surrey members have supported us for nigh on 20 years now and we thank you all guys and girls, for your continued business, the timber yarns and the awful jokes! Thank you also for your contributions to the Kent Air Ambulance, a worthy cause.

More than fifty members of Sandon Woodturners’ Club plus some regular customers came to one of our sawmill days today. We milled a small but interesting walnut then a Norway maple for the club to take away and later, reduced an ash lump to fit the sawmill with our chainsaw mill. Thank you guys for another fun day, for heating up the bearings in our shop till and for nearly £50 donated to Kent Air Ambulance for the offcuts, much appreciated. Not sure the coach driver appreciated all those planks and blanks in the suitcase compartment!

Managed to get a whole Sunday morning in my cosy workshop and turned the finger bowls I have been promising SWMBO for some weeks now. Maybe as many as a hundred weeks in truth. Using sycamore, I finished these the old way – no finishing product, just bare wood, sanded and wetted a couple of times to raise the grain then re-sanded to 320 grit.

We’ve been busy with the sawmill this week. Here’s Dave cutting 6”x 6” spalted beech for vase blanks. It’ll be a while until they’re ready to turn though, so they won’t be in the shop for some time.

Very quick delivery and they give excellent advice when you have a question. Easy to deal with and have a great selection of stock

I placed 2 orders. Not only did they automatically combine the two orders and save me on postage the items arrived in brilliant time and well packaged. Along with the pdf instructions on how to complete the kits. For a newbie to pen turning like myself I will most definitely be returning to make more purchases in future!

I have just been to Stiles & Bates what a lovely shop and very well stocked also the staff and owners are so friendly and helpful it was like turning up at a friends house the first thing I was offered was a cup of coffee by the log burner, I live about 80 miles away but will definitely be returning.

Great shop. Helpful and knowledgable and can vouch for the quality if the training courses. Wood blanks are first class either in store or on line. Can't recommend more highly

Great service from a good company - decided to buy a new lathe - got down to a choice of two - S&B sell both. I had a list of wishes and perhaps aspirations - emailed them on Sunday in regard to a price question, Dave replied early Monday morning - we chatted then on the phone I listened to his advice and wisdom, decided on the way forward and ordered my new Nova 1624 at lunch time Monday - it arrived here in Devon Tuesday at 15:00 hrs - how about that for service ? Delivery chap was pleasant and di a good job - I managed to purloin his pallet truck for a couple of minutes to run the delivery down the garden to the man cave! Again thanks chaps - setup will have to wait now till Thursday - when it says HEAVY on the carton it means HEAVY - I split it up into component parts and carried it into the workshop!
