Stokey Bears Description

Top burgers, fries, hot dogs and wings, accompanied by beer from the East Dulwich Bear Hug Brewery.
Note: Since this review was published, Happiness Forgets in Hoxton has opened a second bar downstairs from Stokey Bears. The Time Out Eating and Drinking Editors

In a city where anyone with access to glazed brioche buns proclaims they’re grilling ‘London’s best burger’, it takes something truly different to stand out from the crowd. In the case of the Burger Bear, the difference is disco. Yes, the burgers here are among the best you’ll get in London – some with the fiendishly hot Rib Man Holy Fuck sauce, another with wrong-sounding-but-right-tasting bacon jam – but what gives this previously peripatetic operation its appeal is an extra dollop of fun.

You don’t need to know what home county the beef here comes from, or how long it’s been aged, or which artisan butcher grinds it to bespoke mince. They all tell you that. You just need to know that if you’re going to be eating burgers, this is a great place to do it – service is smiley and personal, the soundtrack flips between Studio 54 floorfillers, gay anthems and Italo piano classics. The beer is provided by the East Dulwich Bear Hug Brewery, which gives a portion of turnover to rainforest charities. As well as the burgers and fries, which come in authentically tacky plastic baskets, of course, there are hot dogs and wings.

It looks as if this diner is thrown together, temporary even, with its rough-hewn wood tables and beer keg seating (although we’re assured it’s there to stay). But amid the hundreds of grilled patties in restaurants across London, this little bear gets it just right.

Evening everyone!!
It's official.....
As of Today the legend that was Stokey Bears is now closed.
... All 3 sites.
We've been refused planning for SB1 for 3 years now and due to eating trends, delivery apps and rising rents we just can't really compete in the London market any more.
This has been a year in the making really. We've tried everything, even expanding and adding full vegan menus but alas it's just not the one.
Plus I'm genuinely over London. Bristol is what it's all about and Stokey has progressively gotten shitter without my full attention.
Anyway.
Peckham continues to smash it. As does Magic and Bristol is on the up.
Good times ahead. I feel a weight lifted off my shoulders. It's a huge shame obvs but it's been a wild ride and one I've learned a lot with.
Stokey Bears is over... Long live @BurgerBearTom

What a find , A great place to eat and chill and the burgers are amazing.

User

The fact it's just on my doorstep originally drew me in - the burger and macaroni arrancini balls keep me going back. Definitely one of the best burgers in town - and I confess to having tried a few

User

The best burgers other than mine😎 Quite addictive and I need to stop. Manager Keith has been very helpful in the past and was particularly helpful when I had to deal with a nightmare UberEATS delivery.

User

Nothing but perfection ! Makes me think of In-n-Out Burgers. My new fav burger place in town with Kua'Aina. Will treat myself again next time I'm in London ! Greedy Bear all the way ! Thumbs up, guys ;))))))))

My boyfriend and I went to Stokey Bears for the first time last night. This place rocks! Food was delicious, ambience was beyond cool and the staff were amazing! We'll be coming back again and again to our new favourite 'local' and bringing our friends with us! Special should out to Alex and Jack who made our first time a memorable one!

User

Literally the best burger I've ever had! Friendly staff and awesome extra touches! (Haribo with the bill ensured I'll be back!)

Last night I had THE best burger of my whole life. I am an absolute burger lady and I eat mainly burgers when ever I go out for dinner.

Your Grizzly burger (and no doubt the other ones too) was just amazing. It made me a bit emotional (yes I am a woman, but that burger just had it all).

Thank you for the amazing serving and kitchen staff who could tolerate angry customers, who thought that they could have their burger fast. "It's just a burger". No, it is definitely not just a burger. It is a work of art, clearly from a person who has vision to see what you need to have the perfect burger.

Thank you for bringing this into my life. I shall see you today as I could have not stopped thinking about your burger sinse saturday.

Love,

Great menu - not overly packed like most burger joints these days. 15 min wait for all of our food to come out at same time (during a Saturday evening) & decent service. See you again soon

User

Best burger I've ever had, period. Go here if you love burgers, you will not be disappointed.

User

Best burger I have ever had. Bar none. Anywhere.

Go for the Grizzly, or if you have space, the Greedy.

Angry fries are a taste sensation, but definitely Angry - treat them with care and respect!

Absolutely love this place.

User

Amazing burgers, best in London town. Great atmosphere, wicked music, lovely staff & brilliant service.

Here's my honest review of Stokey bears in Stoke Newington, we came about 5pm on Sunday to be warmly greeted by their staff.

The menu is nice and compact, it was a single sheet of paper attached to a clip board (Seems to be same for alot of these burger joints) it consisted of the available burgers and sides with hilarious descriptions of what's on offer I. E HolyF**K sauce. Also written on a chalk board was the daily special for the day.... Which in this case was something they called the hot mess which was I believe a cheese burger with Chilli slathered on top with a side order of meatballs and fries.

Anyway we ordered the classic grizzly burger (Cheeseburger with oak smoked bacon and signature bacon jam) and an Angry bear a cheese burger with relish and ribmen and hot sauce. As for sides we ordered 1 cheesy fries and an order of meatballs which came with a bit of fries.

Drinks we ordered were Gingerella (ginger ale) and Ting ( Tastes like lilt basically). Our order arrived in a timely manner. Side note we asked if we could have both the burgers cut in half so we could try each others burgers (which they did for us no worries).

Anyway lets get to the tastings..... Both burgers were excellent and cooked to a nice medium rare and both were distinct in their own way they were also nice and juicy.

They also have kitchen roll located on each table and appropriately so.

First the Grizzly burger.... It had a nice sweet undertone to it, kinda like a barbecue taste just not as sickly, whilst not overpowering the meatiness of the patty itself. I tasted hints of what I think was honey, most likely from the bacon jam. The patty was super tender thanks to the medium rareness and the blend of meat used, it seemed the meat is hand cut, I could be wrong but the texture was dope.

Next was the angry burger, the same patty and cheese was used so let's talk about the relish and sauces.... I didn't open the burger up to try the relish by itself so I can't comment on it, all I can do is speak about the the bite itself..... Upon the first bite, It tasted like a well made burger the spiciness doesn't quite hit you for the first couple of seconds which allows you enough time to sit back and smile.... Then all of a sudden the chilli comes from no where and feels like you've been making out with a rock left in the blistering heat of the Sahara desert, no but seriously my mouth and lips were tingling from the hot sauce not in a bad way though, it's more like when balancing between pain and pleasure but Teetering more on the pleasure side, it definitely made me happy to be alive even if it was for just a moment.

In conclusion the burgers were both great and both have their own character, The real magic is in the recipe as the taste is incredibly well balanced and nothing is jarring.

Also unlike McDonald's the burger that we were presented looked like what was advertised in the pictures on their website, it isn't exactly aesthetic but it was charming if I had to put it in words.... Like the beast from beauty and the beast.

Looking back I think I should have ordered a double grizzly but maybe the magic might have been lost that way.

Now the sides...... The fries were again well executed, crispy a bit greasy and topped with a mature cheddar cheese.. Also the cheese wasn't piled on like the cheesy chips you expect from your local kebab shop, it was finely grated on, more to season the chips as apposed to cementing over them like fries caught in the bottom of quick sand of cheese.

Next was the meatballs in the tomato sauce, I mean what can I say except that there is a theme of super tender meat, the meatballs were light and tender, I wouldn't be able to tell you the blend they used or if there was any filler to lighten the balls themselves.

All I can say is that they were of good size and the sauce they were in was nice (Basic sauce but very homemade like) we had them with the fries we had. Unfortunately we didn't finish all the sauce but that's because we ran of fries lol.

As for any other condiments, there was just ketchup and mayonnaise, which we used mainly for the fries. I would love to see more sauces preferably made by these guys just to add another dimension to the sides.

Unfortunately no dessert menu, but who really needs it, I mean I came for the burgers and that's what's really important. They say there will be dessert soon but no date given.

To be fair we were both stuffed by the end of it anyway.

On to the service, the service itself is really relaxed, the staff were coming to our tables every now again to see if everything was alright. Had a bit of a conversation with 2 of them, I believe one was the waiter the other being the manager.

We talked to the manager who is on the website holding up what he says was a 16 pounder grizzly burger which he made after creating the promotional photos of his food. He asked us what we had and explained that the regulars like to order off the menu and combinations of both the grizzly and the angry burger or what he calls the angry grizzly resulting in the best of both worlds.

We then asked the waiter what he thought was the best burger joints other than his owns, as me and my mate are on burger pilgrimage trying to find what is truly the best of what London has to offer. He suggested a few which we have already lined up, and will have separate reviews of their own so watch this space if you're interested.

The price of the food and drinks are fair in my opinion and fall in line with other premium burger places.

The atmosphere itself was pretty chill, the decor is bit strange but in a good way. Just picture if Shoreditch had burger joint but is in Hackney.

I heard the music is normally louder by due to neighbours complaints they have had to turned it right down.. Which is fair enough.

So let's rate everything out of 10

Food 8/10

Service 7/10

Ambiance 7.5/10

Unfortunately the burger quality is below average... I could have tasted the burger if it wasn't smothered with sauces! The Bottom line is that Stokey Bear is overrated, offering low quality over-priced burger... had a much better burger down the road @DirtyBurger for the same price!

User

Pricing was ok however all the ingredients were in poor quality + asked for medium but burger was cooked well done + low quality sides + average servicing ** To be honest the drinks menu is quite well. Building a hip brand has never been enough for a London restaurant, sorry..

User

Ordered on Deliveroo. Burger was nothing special but the chips, they were an absolute disgrace: soggy wet and barely cooked. Haven’t been disappointed by a meal in a very long time.
