Possibly the grandest burner of all time. Convection hot air system. 100KW. Designed for a fortress by my favourite stove designer and friend Owen Thomas. What an achievement. ❤️

Morso refurbishment on a 1946 riveted work boat I did a few months back. Loving the stove tools, especially the forcep tongs. The boat was built by boaters and lived on by working boaters, from 1946 until recently and exudes traditionalism and boating knowledge in its layout, fitting and design. No gas. Just coal and diesel for cooking and heat. Same old classic Morso issue with the decaying blanking plates that fall out. This one was out at the back by about a centimetre and... presented a fire and CO risk. You can see in the last photo the lug on the right hand side of the plate has been eaten away by soot. I always carry a spare as it’s such a common issue. New ropes and a rub and a respray, and this old burner sprang back to life again. We’ve been called back to remove and recondition the Boatmans cooking range that is fitted in the boatmans cabin. It’s in need of some fabrication, but is well worth the effort as it’s really a part of the keeping of this old work boat. So differently made to narrows of today, so much more function and how you can see the adaptions over the years, that have made it more so.

This year comes the biggest shake up in stove fitting and stove safety issues on boats, that has happened in all the time I’ve been fitting them. As of next year I will be a Hetas registered installer. Hetas has never covered boats in any great depth, and being Hetas registered has always been a bit like wearing a badge, just because it makes you look like you know what you are doing, for those working on boats. The previous course takes days to complete and includes virtuall...y no practical hands on experience and next to no boat specific sensibilities. It’s aimed at people that already have a degree of knowledge in the field, rather than people that are coming from a cold start. Truth is it’s more important to have years of experience working with metal and understanding heat and CO risks, that are boat specific. So this is a major development. As an extensive fitter and repairer of stoves on boats I’m writing to them to offer my findings as somebody that regularly sees the pitfalls in incorrect installs and long term problems that occur. My photo library of such is immense and I’m sure of interest to them. In all the time I’ve been fitting stoves I’ve wanted for this to be something that exists. Ironically I will be also qualified to fit stoves in houses, which is massively better paid and far less hard work. Good thing I like boats. 🙂

This is why you don’t fit back flues with 90’s on boats. Soot completely blocked the connection between the flue and the stove and up into the neck of the stove pipe and as it’s very corrosive ate all the metal. Also caused build up about 10mm thick on the inside of the pipe wall. No amount of brushing would have cleared that. I had to hammer it to get that to drop. When hammer tested you can see how corrosive the soot is and what damage it creates. Stove was a write off and ...we had a tight budget to work to for the customer. Slates I had for free in the van and the fireproofing is made of off cuts. Old machine mart stove would have cost more to repair than its value. Customer bought the new Hamlet 4 and pipe and we managed to put together a cheap but good quality install out of spare bits. Roof vents were next to the chimney and needing relocating. Luckily when the lady bought the boat the stove was unusable as it was so blocked it wouldn’t light. Previous owner must have been getting ill from it though as it takes years to get into such neglect.

Freshly installed firebox and Morso set up on an old Dutch sailing Tjalk in Chiswick. Really nice tiles from Fired Earth, hand made with a cracked glaze. Hearth surround left in primer for the clients to decide the colour at a later date. Fair bit of work to bring the flue through straight on a sloping and curving roof with such an extreme camber. The boat has a beautiful but very dark hardwood floor and the clients choice of tiles really gives a nice colourful lift to the room.

Love it when the customer sends you a photo a few weeks in to show the install all settled in and telling you they have got to grips with it and are very happy. 😎

First Hamlet 4 I've installed this year. Beautiful little stove. Very well priced for it's efficiency. Firebox and tiling completed and left in raw wood for the owners to paint in the colour of the skirts and frames of the boat. Hearth looks slightly bare at the moment, but as soon as the coal bucket and other tools and bits and bobs are on it it will look right. Customer wanted a nice sized frame and hearth to put plants and candles and pretty things on in the summer. We like it.

Poorly installed stove that was leaking tar. Roof collar wasn't properly horizontal so as the pipe passed through it pinched the inner wall of the cast, causing tar to leak inside and outside of the boat. Simple repair to break down the flue and clean all the connections back to bright. Roof collar reset with a pack to bring it true. Recess for the spigot ground back to a good depth and a fresh seal added. Repair to a cracked pin on the ash pan door. Combustibles at roof level cut back to a safer distance and a quick rub back and a paint. 5hrs work. Other than that a really nice and good looking install.

I've just uninstalled this stove. Customer says they have been having nausea, dizziness and sickness in the morning. All symptoms of monoxide poisoning. This is the most dangerous one I've seen this year. The boat has boat safety and has recently had a survey as it's under new ownership. The survey flagged the flue as 'worth checking' as you can see there was no connection to the roof collar, meaning it was a live exhaust venting straight into the boat. The stove itself had s...oot backing up into the pipe and was causing very poor draw. The final serious issue with this is that the tiles were directly onto a thin concrete sheet, which was directly onto wood, how this amount of pyrolysis didn't start a fire in a cavity I am going to put down to extreme luck. The stove is being replaced as it has serious structural issues in that the recess for the spigot to sit in on the top plate has completely failed. Today we removed all the combustibles and built a fire box. A new flue is being fabricated and the new stove is ready to drop in. It only takes minutes for you to lower your registry plate and check your flue at the roof end. Hot meeting cold causes them to rot there. You can slow this down by packing the void with rockwool. Please people check your tiling by looking at its cross section to see if you have an air gap and correct retardants and take five minutes to see what is happening at the top of your flue. This is one of my most common seen repairs. Stay warm and stay safe. These things you can check yourself. This stove really could have killed its owner or burnt the boat down.

Nice little install of an 8KW burner. Loving the mild steel table it sits on that acts as a radiator and a heat sink.

Recent service of an existing stove. New flue pipe and hearth. This one we call the Paddington bear.

Makes all the cold and grubbiness of the work worthwhile when you see the customer happy with what you've made for them.
"Won't be getting cold this winter, thanks to the skilful south london boy David Duck. He's got exquisite taste"
Thanks for the compliment and glad you are happy with the end result. 👍😎👌

This one we call "The beautiful albatross" the cast had disintegrated on the top plate, forcing us to grind it back to flush and we have had to refashion a means of attaching a pipe. Baby Jesus aka Big Neal has done a wonderful job fabricating my design brief. Bringing back to life this beautiful little cooking range. Really pleased with the outcome of this one. We chose bolting over trying to weld cast as the risks we felt were too high and that coupled with the high possibility that it would have too higher a carbon content, meaning a weld wouldnt take and that in preheating and attempting to weld we could crack it, we decided to take this route.

Built a fire box today for a little cooking range I am restoring. It's warm but I'm still popping them out. Sensible people get the work done out of silly season and are ready for when it comes around. This little beauty is off to see my man Big Neal for a bit of collar fabrication, custom made metal D shaped tray that plugs into the side of the hearths base to extend the distance to catch embers, but can be stored away when not in use and a bendy pipey. No combustibles behind this firebox. Tiles tomorrow. My friend Fleur is a sweetie and lets me buss up the reggae bassline as I work. Real fact.. David works better when his sound runs and he is happier and when he is happier he is more generous when it comes to how small the bill is. Gonna be a sweet install and I'm looking forward to having a dinner made for me in it.

Worth the wait. We now have an amazing stove. Takes time to be excellent.

We had the guys come and take a look at our stove as it had a couple of issues. The adaptor where the flue meets the stove was lifting out and the silicone sealant had perished. Dave re-aligned the flue and packed it with fire rope and new cement, as well as replacing the fire rope on the door. They also gave us some great advice about ventilation and replacing the chimney. They did a fantastic job and were a quick and efficient, highly recommend.

User

I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Stove Right to absolutely anybody who is looking for stove installs and refits.

He was incredibly helpful from beginning to end and has left us with a stove and surround we absolutely love!

User

Highly recommended!!! David came by on short notice and I felt it was a match right away. He took a closer at my Morso Squirrel and realised the back plate was done. He even had the spare part with him, so I had a freshly and properly serviced stove on no time!

User

Had a great experience with David. He worked non stop to get my stove installed in one day! He found solutions to any problems that arose. I would highly recommend as he knows his stuff!
