About Stowe House

Stowe House; a magnificent neo-classical palace with beautiful state rooms.

Open to the public and available to hire for weddings & events.

Stowe House Description

Stowe House - A lavish temple of delights!

If you had power and riches, how would you use them?

In the 18th century, the powerful Temple-Grenville family chose to create an idyllic landscape filled with temples. Amidst these enchanting gardens, they built the most lavish temple of all, Stowe House. This temple was so grand that even Queen Victoria was bewildered by its interiors. Filled with astonishing rooms imitating ancient worlds and classical ruins, the House reflects the flamboyant and colourful characters of its creators. Ceilings and walls decorated with hidden messages and mythology hint at the family’s former power and glory.

But wealth and power do not last forever. Excessive spending led to bankruptcy. Extravagant parties, royal visits and Italian Grand Tours gave way to scandal, intrigue and eventually abandonment. The richest family in England became the greatest debtors in the world.

In 1922, in the face of demolition, Stowe School saved the building from certain destruction. Unlike the loss and decline of many English country houses, Stowe House found a new and revived use for the 20th and 21st centuries as a school for boys and girls.

Stowe House Preservation Trust was established in 1997 to restore the House and share this special place with the world. We work in collaboration with the National Trust and Stowe School to open Stowe to you as a complete estate. Come inside the House to see the results of one of the most pioneering restoration projects of the 21st century and glimpse inside one of the most excessive homes in England!

Wonderful afternoon tea at Stowe, for Alison's hen party, with a lovely tour of the house.

User

What a amazing place would of never gone there if we had not joined the Trust and only about 45 mins from our house in Minster Lovell we will be going back

User

Thoroughly enjoyed my time at Stowe. The area itself is absolutely gorgeous and is so perfect for a nice walk no matter the season.

User

The snow drops walk is lovely and if you get time pay to go into house not owned by the national trust

User

Stowe house and gardens, even at this time of year, was a lovely day out. The landscape of the grounds are in impeccable condition. Especially enjoyed the architecture and monuments on the estate, and the tour of the house.

Will return in the summer to spend time around the lake.

One of the highest blessings in being considered by many to be amongst the best Caribbean musical entertainers in the UK, is the opportunity to be invited to perform at the very best venues around the country. I can honestly say that Stowe House sits within that category. Wonderful in-house team lead by Sam who is a pleasure to work along side - had a wonderful and productive onsite meeting with the bride and groom and looking forward to the wedding day this June - Versatile and highly recommended venue ... Gary (Steelasophical Steel Band & DJ)

User

Great place, our daughter was married here last summer. Our visit today was a little wetter but such lovely memories.

User

Even on a muddy sleety winters' day, the kids had fun on the "Baddies" walk. Exploring the cascade, cave and sleeping wood. Getting back to the visitor's centre was warm and the staff are very friendly and, importantly, child-friendly. There was far too much to do in one morning so we promised to take them back to see the rest later in the spring. It's great to be in touch with nature and our history.

User

Beautiful walks and picnic stop offs for our kids and friends today. The place is stunning.

We had a very good time and enjoyed long walk. The place is stunning. Good day out!

User

Nice castle and very nice gardens.

User

For us, the outstanding feature of Stowe are the acres of peace and quiet to walk around. The 'Lake Walk' has, as its title suggest, some beautiful views to occupy your time, and plenty of places to sit and just quietly contemplate. With so many cars on the car park, surprisingly, you meet very few people on your stroll. Highly recommend a visit.

User

Beautiful park. Loved walking around. Sadly after 3 hrs we left as there just wasn't enough toilets. The park is so big so I feel like we missed out.
