This week was the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the Student Uprising in Myanmar (then Burma). Eastern Star by Guy Slater is a powerful new play set against this backdrop. It is based on the true story of a young BBC reporter and his main source, the architect of the revolution.
What happens when the international reporter walks away? What happens when he returns?

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the students uprising in Myanmar - a momentous revolution that brought millions to the streets against the military dictatorship and launched Aung San Suu Kyi onto the world stage. It began at 8 mins past 8am on 8-8-88.
The BBC's reporter Chris Gunness became known as the voice of the revolution. His main source was its architect. Their heart-wrenching story is told in #EasternStar, a new play by Guy Slater.

We went to see Combustion on Friday night: it was excellent! The dialogue is witty and so reminiscent of so many conversations occupying British Muslims and wider society. It was refreshing to see that the dialogue didn't side step some of the very tricky topics, but through the dialogue and drama, offered a window, an insight - hopefully enough to really convey how complex some topics are to navigate. As usual, the set, music and ambience was creative and effective. This is my third visit to Tara Arts, and each time it has been a truly refreshing and invigorating experience.

We went see Bollywood Jack last night with 7 year old Dylan, our grandson.

What an absolutely brilliant piece of theatre full of Bollywood colour and dance routines.

A panto for all ages in an intimate space so everyone feels like they are part of the show. The acting and singing was superb with songs and a script full of great humour.

If anyone wants to squeeze a panto into their Christmas schedule this is the one to book up.

Well done Tara.....can't wait for next year's panto.

We saw Child of Divide tonight and it was really educational and well written with kids in mind. Excellent performance, really emotional and moving. Well done to you all.

We saw "An Arrangement of Shoes" last night (21.7.17) and enjoyed it very much.

This was a fluent and subtle one-woman performance that presented a delicately modulated story of a family and of India’s - and the world’s - recent history, over the course of one hour. Like the carefully knitted pullover of the story, or indeed a thoughtful and ever-varying arrangement of footwear, an autobiography was created and shared with us so vividly that, on recalling it, it seems that the stage was occupied by numerous characters, mainly friends and family members spanning several generations.

The perspectives, concerns, values, human habits and religious beliefs of the people in the story came to us through the clever use of different voices and mannerisms, enhanced by the vivid, playful, almost childlish arrangement and rearrangement of shoes - the shoes that had captured our attention under the single spotlight shining on them in a small, neat stack centre-stage as we took our seats. At times these represented their owners; at other times they conveyed the relationships between people, and their ideologies, societies, politics and power during the passage of time. They even assumed the voices of the characters, and allowed us to peep inside the hearts and minds of those whose tale was so well told.

Humour, pathos, irony and dramatic effects were expertly deployed in this small, lovely theatre, in which we felt at times like invisible guests eavesdropping on intimate conversations - even thoughts - and at other times like friends in whom the narrator was confiding. It is impossible to categorise the performance, since it was effective on many levels. Above all, we felt part of a vivid and authentic personal narrative, and the effect was both disturbing and touchingly reaffirming.

We just saw "Ivan" by Scott Sparrow there and it was brilliant! The best show I have seen in London in many years!

User

We had such an amazing time at BTL's Hamlet on Saturday. We caught the matinee on a whim and will definitely be returning; great production, lovely little theatre - with not a single bad seat, and friendly staff.

New favourite place.

User

This was my first event at The Tara Arts and was pleasantly surprised at the high level of acting

Saw 'Chigger Foot Boys' and not only was the show very good and well worth watching, but the actors drew one in and TOLD the story.

Highly recommended

User

Saw the show yesterday and enjoyed the best entertainment imaginable. Very funny dialogue and songs, wonderful performers who really knew how to interact with the audience, and terrific costumes (especially the pantomime cow!)

User

Really enjoyed the performance of Macbeth at the Buxton opera house tonight. Never seen crones quite like it. Very imaginative interpretation and clever eastern imagery mixed with traditional murderous ambition. Great job guys. The only down side was that you deserved a bigger audience. We'll be back to see you if you come to Buxton again :-)

User

Just wished I lived nearer. Such a lovely theatre, the decor oh am moving in! Staff really lovely and friendly. Right opposite station. Saw Nitin Sawhney India and Me - the most perfect venue. Your right there it's so compact but perfect. Thanks for an amazing evening

User

Just home from Bollywood Jack and totally loved it!! Everyone should go and see it now before it's too late!!

User

I went to see Combustion on Friday evening, it was brilliant! A true but fair reflection of the current situation, explored a range of issues that are relatable. Serious yet very funny!

User

Had a great visit on Boxing Day. 16 of us, all ages from 9-70 and thoroughly enjoyed the panto. All the usual ingredients wrapped in Bollywood style. Great cast, loads of energy and talent all round. Loved it!

User

Fantastic production in a very small and beautiful theatre. We had a party of 12 including some choosy teenagers and everyone loved it. Great costumes and played with lots of energy and laughs.

User

Excellent re-vamped space in downtown Earlsfield. Long may you run.

User

A lovely studio theatre which, apparently, has recently won an architectural award. Comfortable seating and nice little bar area. Very much enjoyed Rob Mountford's 'Vagabonds: my Phil Lynott Odyssey'

User

15 years ago I ran upto introduce myself to Jatinder Verma at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, nervous inexperienced and hustling for work on stage, as I was trained. He listened to my babble, and just said "you're eyes are going to get you on TV". I thought it was a strange and funny thing to say, over a decade of TV and still hustling for more theatre, it all makes sense! Haha! Poppy x

User

My first time in Tara and was pleasantly surprised with the whole layout and was greeted and made welcome when I arrived.

Saw 'Combustion' which I thoroughly enjoyed and thought the acting was superb. I felt as though I was there with them in Bradford.

User

It was good family fun. In an intimate setting with all the panto features, good fun you will enjoy it!
