About Thames Chase

The #ThamesChase Community Forest offers green space for families, dog-walkers and lovers of the outdoors. Visit our Forest Centre for events, kids activities, cafe and shop.

Thames Chase Description

The Thames Chase Trust aims to make the Thames Chase Community Forest an inspirational example of landscape regeneration through cost effective environmental improvements that changes lives and demonstrates these values through exemplar community led management at the Thames Chase Forest Centre.

Thames Chase Community Forest

Thames Chase Forest covers 40 square miles of countryside around the London /Essex borders.

Thames Chase Community Forest encompasses countryside in Barking and Dagenham, Brentwood, Havering and Thurrock. Within its boundaries there has been a concerted effort, over the last 20 + years to re-generate despoiled landscape and enhance the natural environment for the benefit of local people and wildlife.

The Past

The landscape within the Thames Chase Community Forest had suffered in the past from urban sprawl, unplanned industrial development and all the pollution and visual intrusion that countryside close to a large conurbation suffers from, added to which there has been damage done by gravel and sand extraction, landfill and loss of farmland and natural woodland.

The last 20 years -

Two million plus trees have been planted, thanks to the Community Forest, and new areas of meadowland and ponds have been created. Already wildlife has benefited from a more diverse habitat.
People too have benefitted! Cycle routes, bridleways and footpaths have been created. All over the Community Forest there are now country parks, woods and river valleys all accessible to the public.
Whether you want to walk your dog, watch birds, run for health or cycle with your grandchildren there are places in the Community Forest to enjoy yourself.

The Future -

But with a goal of eventually covering 30% of open land with woodland, to say nothing of connecting up all the natural and historic attractions so that everyone can travel from one to the other without going on a busy road, this is a project that has a lot further to go!

Who is driving the project?

Since 2010 it is the Thames Chase Trust which has been responsible for co-ordinating the efforts of all the organisations that have an interest in the countryside within the Community Forest. With a modest amount of funding from local authorities, the Trust itself, assisted by the Forestry Commission, has been levering in funds to improve the landscape, to create more open space accessible to the public and to plant more trees. The Forestry Commission is a very important partner in the enterprise. It has been responsible for restoring landfill sites within Thames Chase Community Forest. It is working with commercial interests to bring back to countryside the 16% of land that was previously landfill.

The Trust is also responsible for coordinating the efforts of local authorities, the Forestry Commission, other charities such as the Wildlife Trusts, the Woodland Trust and many others, to work together, ignoring boundaries of any sort, to promote ambitious schemes to do more to improve the experience of visiting countryside close to where people live.

Volunteering and other ways to help

The remarkable thing about the Trust and the Forest Centre is that, with the help of a very few staff, they are run entirely by volunteers. Volunteering can mean everything from helping man the Visitors Centre, to becoming a trustee of the Thames Chase Trust or joining the Conservation Volunteers who are out and about in the Community Forest doing all sorts of practical tasks.

Went to Thames Chase today with the kids, for the 1st time. We had a great time and it was so much fun being outdoors building Teepees and finding all the different activities!! Will def be coming back.

We visited Thames Chase again yesterday with our grandsons. They love it there. Took their own bikes and rode round the Chase stopping to play on the ant hill, building a den with all the logs, playing in the tents. Unfortunately the 3 wooden pipes we out of bounds for maintenance but the tower was fine. They love playing in there climbing to the top. Then to the park and a cup of tea and refreshments and a game of hide and seek. All in another great day was had by all.

The Superworm trail is great for little ones, not too long and fun things to climb and play on along the way. We got the book and activity leaflet with crayons and string (Superworm!) for £3.50, well worth it thank you we had a great morning.

My son, Paul and his wife Beryl's wedding was there on 23 July and it an absolutely delightful place, the atmosphere and space is lovely, it is a place never to forget.

I have also dined in their cafeteria and the food and service is great there too as is their little souvenir shop with some lovely books for sale. Support it as its a place worth treasuring fit the future.

Thank you

My first time to Thames Chase was yesterday, I was so impressed that it's such a lovely countrified place and really close to my home.

I was with my daughter and three hrNchildren ages 10, 7, and 17 months, we had a picnic for which there are many areas, the older kids were scooting and/or taking turns to push the baby in his car, there were lots of safe pathways as well as play areas all along the route, we all had a fabulous day. The toilets were very clean and the cafe looks warm, inviting and resomly priced, I look forwRd to going back many times with other family members and friends. All it costs is two pound to park all day, parking was very busy because of school holidays. 5*

Love the wide, easy to use paths, the activities for the kids (including the new Stick Man trail), and liking the recent upgrade to the patio area outside the cafe. It always seems to rain when we come, but it hasn't spoiled a visit yet

I often visit the superworm trail with my two boys aged 4 and 1 1/2, it is one of their favourite places to go. There's lots of picnic tables along the trail and by the cafe. The play park by the cafe is also enjoyed. At weekends and school holidays you can hire a bike and there is often family and children's activities going on which we will be trying out soon! Lovely friendly helpful staff too!

I love this place, great for family walks, dog walking, picnics. Only thing I think they need are bins. I understand you want us to take litter home but still some don’t a few dog poo and litter bins would take minutes to empty, but would save having to look at crisp packets and black poo bags in the bushes and floating by.

Either myself or my parents visit several times a week with my dog, he loves the walks but most of all he loves just sitting around the cafe area watching the world go by. The staff are very friendly and it's been great to see the cafe area develope over the past few years, loads of places to sit and eat/chill, keep the good work up

User

A lovely place for a couple of hours the trail was great for the children and the forests around were lovely , bought our dog too she loved it x

User

This was good when it used to be the Superworm trail but much better now it's the Stickman Trail. Same apparatus though but the kids really like them. It's great for them to ride round because they have proper paths so my 2yr old, 4yr old and 10yr old can easily ride their bikes. It's good for the buggy too with the baby.

Our dog and to like it too, lots to keep her busy in the walk around. I'd recommend taking your little ones here for a walk or ride.

The do bike hire on the premises too.

User

My family and I love the walks and the little park. My kids love to climb the fort and enjoy going in the tipis. The staff are wonderful and friendly in the visitor centre and always cheerful and like to engage in conversation.

However, I think the new £2 charge for the carpark is a bit cheeky when we sometimes only stay an hour. So 4* it is I'm afraid, otherwise I would give 5*.

User

Loved the walk really lovely ,but would be nice to have bowl of water for dogs , and be able to use a card in cafe for drinks ect ,u can use it in shop but not cafe so we went home for tea bit of a shame x

User

Great place for the kids to tire themselves out at! Shame the stickman trail isn't there anymore as my boys enjoyed it. We have been here many times however and we never get bored!

User

It was nice for the kids to run around and the play areas were really gd but the map wasn't that great. Only realised the trail was the other side due to seeing some people standing around as we drove in. Big wasp problem today due to no bins so they were being attracted to everyone's food. Car park not big enough and as we were leaving was rudely told we should not be parked where we had. Even though we were following the rest of the cars. Quite disappointed really. Gruffalo trail at Thorndon much better.

User

I've always loved coming here, from the moment the cafe first opened. The coffee was excellent and scrambled egg on toast delicious.

Haven't been in the last year though for various reasons.

First visit in a while today.....The outside area looked great although I was a bit disappointed with the cafe. Coffee was very weak and the choice of sandwich was white bread or nothing (as the brown bread was still frozen)! It was midday.

Sandwich came looking a bit sad.... no salad, garnish or crisps on the side like before.

The cakes weren't as spectacular as I remember them to be. All in all a bit disappointing.

Hopefully next visit will be better.

User

Terrible customer service, they have a sign on the gate saying over height vehicles phone for access ( they have a 6'6" barrier on the entrance) I phoned saying we are a family of 8 and are in a minibus to be told we wouldn't be let in in case we are travellers!! I was told to find somewhere else to park and walk in, when I explained I'm disabled and wouldn't be able to do that I was told sorry we can't help you. Thanks for nothing.
