Here is an astonishing behind the scenes shot of the Greenland ice sheet.
Timo Lieber captured this image right at the end of the glacier, where the ice is really rugged. These glaciers are amongst the fastest in the world and they are responsible for up to 2/3 of the ice sheet's contribution to sea-level rise.
Don't miss out on seeing the exhibition for yourself at Bonhams from 20th February. Doors open at 10am.

During the shoot it often took Timo several attempts to nail the perspective – particularly if you are flying at 100 miles per hour.
In order the shoot vertically down the pilot has to put the plane literally into a very deep spin!
This is a behind the scenes photograph of one of the official THAW 2017 photographs, can you guess which one it is?

Another fantastic aerial shot of Professor Alun Hubbard from Aberystwyth University, at the SAFIRE research camp NERC: Natural Environment Research Council, retrieving one of the sensors that were placed in a faster-flowing, more rugged part of the glacier.
These crevasses are seriously deep!

Here is a great behind the scenes shot of one of the THAW 2017 exhibition photographs. It's hard to appreciate the full scale of the landscape.
The ice canyon at the top of the image is about 30 metres high - a human would be a tiny dot - merely invisible. These images really do capture the dramatic yet beautiful structure of the polar ice caps.

With just one week to go here is a stunning photograph exclusively from the exhibition!

Two glacial rivers merging in a lagoon. Sometimes nature can leave you speechless?!
THAW 2017 really captures the incredible power of combining photography with science.
Aerial photography documents the status quo, whereas science provides a long-term perspective – both in terms of what happened historically and what may happen in the future.

Thanks so much for sharing PODAS Photography Workshops!
THAW 2017 opens at Bonhams one week today! -------------------------------- After our recent trip to Antarctica, this story is one that really touches us... . "I do not give the viewers a real sense of scale in my photographs. I invite them to step closer to the images and ask the question: what's behind all this beauty?"
Photographer Timo Lieber captures the Arctic's transformation in his THAW 2017 exhibition.

All of the THAW 2017 images were taken with the PhaseOne XF IQ3 100MP and a range of lenses, including the 80mm Blue Ring lens and the 120mm Blue Ring Macro lens.
Together with the Kenyon gyro, it’s a set up capable of producing the most astonishing, high-resolution images one can imagine. It really makes all the difference, particularly for an exhibition like THAW 2017.

Behind the scenes of the SAFIRE research camp NERC: Natural Environment Research Council.
As the ice moves towards the sea by several metres every day, Timo had to call all the scientists on their satellite phones just before take-off to be sure he had the right coordinates and would be able to find them in the vast ice desert.
