About The Albion Pub

A pub with a garden in Islington

The Albion Pub Description

The Albion is a Georgian gem left over from a time when Islington was fields and farmland and where the regulars would take afternoon walks out of the city to visit us.

With its wisteria covered façade and log fires, The Albion provides the perfect location to entertain, relax and forget the stresses of modern life, combining a central Islington location, just off Upper Street, with a picturesque walled garden situated within the Barnsbury conservation area.

The Albion won The Observer Food Monthly award for “Best Sunday Lunch 2009” and is one of The Independent’s “Top 50 Sunday Lunch Venues” and The Guardian’s “Best Pubs in the UK”.

We traveled all the way from California to visit the Albion. The food was delicious (we had the pork chop and chicken pie)! The garden area was charming and Greta provided delightful service. Thank you for an amazing experience.....and thanks for my very first Pimms! We'll definitely be back. Best wishes.

My partner and I booked The Albion's Private Dining Room for our Wedding reception just after Easter, and we honestly couldn't have had a better experience - they even happily welcomed our dog!

To start, the pub itself is an absolutely stunning Georgian building, which somehow makes it feel like a little slice of the country right in the middle of London. The Private Dining room itself is a beautiful room located upstairs, with original features, rich blue/green walls, tall windows, a long mahogany table along the length of the room which seats around 22 people (we had a comfortable 20 guests in total) and a mounted deer head overlooking at all - which also made for a great photo prop given the poor weather on the day!

The food itself was second to none with the range on the menu being suitable for all palettes; from Beer Battered Fish and Chips presented beautifully, to somewhat more adventurous options such as Ox Tail and Bone Marrow on Toast, to Lighthorn Lamb Rump (as pictured). Waiting staff were professional and friendly, and were more than happy to cater for everyone's needs.

Given the nature of the day, we wanted to pop by the night before the Wedding to make sure everything was in place, and the staff at The Albion were more than happy for us to make sure the room was perfect. As well as this, they took delivery of our Wedding cake the morning of, and made sure that it was not only refrigerated, but placed out in time for everyone's arrival.

Our Wedding Ceremony took place at Islington Town Hall, and The Albion is only a short walk away, with many great photo opportunities along the way!

Finally, we'd like to thank Valentin, Manu, Diana and Antonio for their assistance throughout the entire arrangement process; despite a few minor miscommunications, they were extremely helpful, professional and friendly, and made the process as easy and stress free as possible.

For small Wedding receptions in Islington, this is the place you want to go!

Beautiful day in the garden for a beautiful wedding.

User

Such a lovely pub on a beautiful summers evening. We ate there two days running. It was very busy and the service rather slow but really enjoyed the food. Fish and chips were delicious. Would have loved more mushy peas though !

User

Nice pub..when with my daughter' charming manager gave us 2 compliment glass of prosecco for a miner error: but will be back loved the food will come back with friends ☺

User

Met my handsome friend for Sunday lunch. Not disappointed and the food was great. Stuart had sirloin steak and I had lamb with trimming and we paired the food with a Pinot Noir. Delicious food and great wine. pub was busy very busy so I think staff can get slightly confused at times. Will come back again as we had a fabulous meal.

User

Great service, especially from Victoria who through going up and down the stairs provided everything we needed. Glad we had a room to ourselves, we felt welcome and the kids had fun too.

User

Average food, however yamy. Slow service nevertheless nice waiters and waitresses. God beers and excellent and cozy garden tables. Lovely for sunny days.

User

Great pub but why add service charge to your pints?! Pubs that try to get away with this need to be called out. Especially when said pints already cost £6. Cease and desist.

User

Food is good But can get quite Noisy,

we had booked a table ,On arrival with my dog I was shown to a table But someone else's (a couple 2 tables away) had there dog asleep under Our table I quickly asked any chance you could ask the owner of the dog to move the dog to nearer there table as I wanted our dog to go under the table or near us ,The girl seating us snapped back they were here first BUT there dog is under our table !! She asked the owner so half heartily its a no ,She slammed the menus on the table and Marched off ,The Bar service is very nice and friendly and the main Waiter was really nice but this Girl needs retraining and found her incapable of dealing with anything ,Having spent my life working in catering I know its difficult but there are better ways of handling this situation and YOU don't make a customer feel that the are in the wrong for requesting something reasonable

User

We all had the Sunday Lunch, really average for the price they charge ( £18.50), one small piece of meat, a few mixed veg & a Yorkshire, staff were pretty good though, nice attitude as it was very busy.

User

Nice pub but the meat in my roast beef dinner was cold, though I didn't complain. When the sticky toffee pudding and white chocolate ice cream arrived it was cold and I sent it back. The staff did apologise, brought me a new heated version and didn't charge me for the dessert. My roast beef tasted nice, if a bit cold, but portion was an ok size. Some of our party ordered the lamb and the portion size was quite small. Expensive food and a tad overpriced.

User

Nice pub and garden but bad service over lunch. Food cold and lamb too rare had to ask for money off the bill.

User

Lovely pub, terrible service. We booked a table there for my friends birthday. After ordering drinks to the table, the drinks orders arrived wrong about 4 times. Instead of the staff apologising for getting our order wrong, they were frustratingly accusing us of asking for the wrong drinks in the first place. After deciding it was best to ask for the bill and just buy the rest of our drinks at the bar, the staff again were rude about this and asked for the table back even though it was reserved. I caught the staff gathering around a few times and looking over at us, laughing and shaking their heads. Looking at other comments left on this page, it appears we are not alone in being the recipient of bad customer service. Shall not be returning!

User

I came to the Albion in a big party of 9, as the birthday man had high hopes for the food/overall experience of the pub as he's heard good things. However when we arrived, the service was below average, with the waiters (waitresses especially) being uninterested and a general comment was made from everyone I was with stating 'they really look like they hate their job'. I know waitressing on a Sunday night is shit but please don't blame me for it nor affect our evening with your negativity.

The food was good; I had the wild mushroom and truffle oil gnocchi and my other half had the fish and chips - both were lovely, if a bit cold. Our starters became part of the main course as they were either forgotten about or severely delayed in preparation. Despite being such a big party on a birthday meal out, not an ounce of interest was given to us, nor any sort of discount given (not that that's expected, but a kind gesture on a cold Sunday night would've been really well received).

Overall, shoddy service that left a bad taste in my mouth.

User

Had expected an excellent roast and it was disappointing - clearly cooked a while before and left under the heat lamps to dry out and become tough. Generous portions but would prefer more quality less quantity if had to choose.
