CORROSIVE VISIONS 7-14 June 2018 Private View: Thursday 7 June 6 – 8 pm Open Daily: 10am – 6pm
... ‘Corrosive Visions’ aims to reflect on and illustrate the past in the present, but always in conjunction with inevitable decay and change.
The show combines the works of two artists: the ‘Corrosive’ mordançage prints by Arepo and ‘Visions’ of sculptures of Julian Wootton.
CORROSIVE by AREPO A collection of prints depict the ancient Tuscan city of Lucca, whose incredible state of preservation throughout history is almost surreal. The walls encircling the ancient town have remained intact since their foundation, even as the city has expanded and modernised. Its monuments still present a series of enigmatic sculptures and inlays whose masterful craftsmanship seems to challenge the passing of the ages.
VISIONS by JULIAN WOOTTON Clay is the basic material with which Wootton works but many of pieces are also comprised of a mixture of media: wood, plastic, metal, cloth. Social and cultural production, literature and even film are also referenced in some of his sculptures. The Sphinx and Eloi, from H.G Well’s science fiction novel The Time Machine, Nosferatu’s Galleon, inspired by Werrner Herzog’s film and Klaus Kinski’s performance in it.

Transcendental Thresholds- Works by Kristina Horne 2-3 May 11am -5pm Private View: 2 May 6-9 pm.
... Transcendental Thresholds is about crossing corporeal boundaries. Departing from the physical, structural and architectural, this sculptural exhibition draws attention to the physical as a dominating part of human experience. Evoking transitory earthly existence, the fragile glass forms appear to melt over the thresholds of the metal structures and elude to the body’s impermanence and traces of what it leaves behind.
The fact that Kristina’s works are exhibited inside an old crypt, where bodies were buried in the early XIXth century, reminds the viewer of the ritualistic moment in which the body matter and the soul are united. The space of this exhibition lets the spirit of the past encounter the spirit of contemporary art. It is a chance for one to reflect on the state of his or her body and the place that it occupies in society. The body is like a mirror reflecting culture and society, like the words Soul at Rest Body at Rest of the neon light sculpture are reflected in the glass pieces. Kristina plays with the idea of reflection on both formal and conceptual levels asking one to contemplate on the design of the material and spiritual self. It is the human body where nature and culture meet. It is where the biological merges with the intellectual and the spiritual. The body encloses the spirit, like the architecture of this church confines spirituality of the body of society. The walls of this church are a boundary where the sacred and the profane meet. Much like our flesh is the corporeal boundary where the inner life meets the outside world.
Transcendental Thresholds examines the agency through the body as a symbol in the world. In this exhibition the body acts as a threshold between the inside and the outside, as a natural symbol of what we incorporate and all that we radiate with. Transcendental Thresholds invites the viewers to immerse in themselves. Agata Kik

Sicily Meets London April 23- 28 Open: 23 April: 3-5pm 24-28 April 10.30am-5pm
... Curator : Master Salvo Coglitori, Francesco Bertucci
Two large islands, at the antipodes of the European continent, two different realities that show each other.
The master and artist Coglitori teaches the art of painting both in a modern and classic way on the slopes of Etna, the majestic volcano that dominates Sicily as if it were the guardian of this beautiful Italian island.
The school draws on the Sicilian artistic tradition by inserting ideas that from time to time students, coming from all over Europe and beyond, insert, making their contribution and improving the artistic background of themselves and others.

Neulinge (Newcomers) 20-21 April Open: 11-7pm daily
Private View:... 19 April 5-9pm
Guest curated by Georgina White-Aldworth from HEWING WITTARE ‘Neulinge’ is a show that will consider reciprocities and relationships between the practices of 10 Artists, Annie Marie Akussah, Yihsin Chu, Chudamani Clowes, Marium M Habib, Aty Hadidi, Maryam Hina Hasnain, Yun Park, Divya Sharma, Monique Wan, and Samiya Younis.
Using paint on canvas, clay, textiles, wooden sculptures, film and projection, each artist has created works that have a very physical and bodily presence in the space of The Crypt Gallery. This collection of works, born out of the artist’s hard labour, demonstrate a harmony of texture, scale and form. ‘Neulinge’ translates from German for newcomer. Germany is a country that has been seen as leading the EU in response to the migration crisis and in 2015 the country granted protection to the highest number of first time asylum applicants. In the UK today, newcomers arrive desperately needing help and protection, whilst current residents have lost confidence in a government whose focus is on what ‘type’ of exit from the EU they will negotiate rather than on everyday issues needing to be addressed.
Keeping with the zeitgeist, this exhibition gives a voice to 10 artists, all of whom are female with non-EU heritage and currently practicing in London. It celebrates the work of an underrepresented minority within the contemporary art scene. The ‘Neulinge’ artist looks for recognition whilst displacing the typical narratives within a minority art practice. Looking at subjects of freedom, friction, adventure, commerce, shifting of identity, empires, foreign land, independence, hybrid culture, visual and verbal language each artist has started a new beginning in the UK, demonstrating in their work a consideration of customs from their previous lives and new, adopted cultures of their current home. Arriving to the UK at different stages of their lives or of second generation migration, each artist explores the ideas of permanently or temporarily settling, the feeling of being an expatriate and moving to unfamiliar territory and discovering their new identity

The Michael Bowman Retrospective
Private view: 12 April 6:30 – 9pm
... Open to the public: 13 April 11:00 – 5pm
Curator: Donna Henderson
Growing up in the North East with its industrial landscapes and contrasting hills and moorland inspired Bowman’s early interest in painting. Throughout his university and working life, he has created work in diverse media; oils, watercolour, ceramics and most recently, etching.
Using 3D mixed media, Bowman exhibits unusual narratives based on rock faces and cliffs, incorporating hidden images and miniature tableaux. His architectural training has given him a great love of model making and an affinity for structural form which inform his art.
His most recent ceramic works include studies of monk-like figures that incorporate elements of mystery and uncertainty. These work in contrast to the simplicity of the architectural structures, unusual clock pieces and traditional pots decorated with landscapes and figures.
Alongside this body of work, the artist is etching a series of prints. He creates intricate woodland and mountain scenes, contrasted with urban and industrial landscapes, enjoying the fine detail that this medium can produce. Rural, mountainous landscapes continue to be an important source of inspiration. Source materials include personal archived photographs taken in the British Isles and abroad.
The artist resides in London and is married with one son.

M.J. ALEXANDER’S PORTRAIT OF OKLAHOMA 11-13 January Open 12-7pm daily Private view: Thursday 12 January 6-9 pm
... M.J. Alexander’s Portraits of Oklahoma Make European Debut At Crypt Gallery
Award-winning photographs from the American artist M.J. Alexander will make their European debut in an 11-13 January show in London’s Crypt Gallery.
The exhibit, entitled Oklahoma, features more than 100 images chronicling people and landscapes of the 46th state, at the intersection of the Great Plains, Bible Belt, Confederate South, and American West. The International Photography Hall of Fame describes Alexander’s work as “combining the vision of an artist with the skills of a storyteller.”
The portraits — a newborn against the vast Oklahoma sky, sacred tribal dancers, five-generation families, rodeo bronc-busters, pioneers whose lives spanned three centuries — are paired with signature quotes from those photographed.
Edward Knight, an alumnus of the Royal College of Music, has composed accompanying music and sound design. The installation will incorporate audio of his evocative chamber works with sounds recorded in remote Oklahoma locations to create unique sound worlds designed for the Crypt Gallery’s atmospheric labyrinth of arches, corridors, and alcoves.
Alexander’s work has been published by The New York Times and Time magazine, featured in more than 20 solo exhibitions, and honored by UNESCO and the China Folklore Photographic Association. Heidi Evans of the New York Daily News praised the ongoing series as “remarkable, moving photographs and words that reveal the inner lives and quiet power of ordinary people — people you might otherwise pass by. M.J. Alexander shows the poetry deeply rooted in the Oklahoma — and American — landscape.”
The event is presented with support from the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and Oklahoma City University.

ALL’S WELL Thursday 16th November, 11am – 4pm Private View: Wednesday 15th November, 6pm – 9pm
The works in the show vary in theme and aims, but are cohesive in the underlying universality of the human experience. As with anything ‘all’s well that ends well…’, and the exhibitions play on words ambiguously leaves the famous saying unfinished, functioning as a question to open discussion on the trials and tribulations of the everyday. Raising questions from their lived experie...nces, and opening discussion between those of a non-art and art background. In displaying work ranging from painting to sculpture to performance the historical setting of the Crypt provides the perfect space to engage viewers with a multitude of works. As if a timeline, the exhibition is on for one evening and a day, juxtaposing the historical nature of the space and portraying the immediacy and relevance of the work within in.
Artists involved: Cai Bellis, Shauna Cribbin, Rebecca Evans, Lucia Ferrari, Emma Victoria Green, Eleanor Hayward, Florence Hutchings, Georgia Kerr, Tomasz Kowalski, Seren Metcalfe, Annie Metzger, Tom Morgan, Billy Parker, Leonie Rousham, Fay Rushton Ryan, Stanley Welch

SYMPOSIUM: The Coming Community
7 0 12 November Private view: 6 November 6-9pm Open: 7 – 12 Nov 10am-4pm
... This exhibition is focused on the discourse and perception of “Youth” within both a social and cultural context. The course revolves around exploring the contemporary living status of young individuals surviving and thinking in today’s intense social reality. The force of young people has played a leading role in modern history, particularly in the context of revolution. In China, The May Fourth Movement was an anti-imperialism, cultural, and political movement grown out of the anger of its student participants in Beijing on May 4th, 1919. It was considered a landmark event in pushing forward the development of new culture and a modern Chinese society.
Earlier this year in Britain, the General Election results have shown that young people have powered the comeback of the Labour Party, playing a crucial role in denying Theresa May a Commons majority. In opposition to what has been stated, the image of “Youth” frequently shifts in the mediatized world, the pioneers of a revolution sometimes turn out to be depicted in the media as the crowd of a riot depending on how the narrative is controlled, while the concept of being young is widely commercialized and condensed into the ideas of indulging in pleasure and personal satisfaction. These confuse us as young people. As a method of praxis, a group of young artists rise to interrogate reality in an attempt to resist the proliferation of information and excessive images that may have anti-Youth narratives, to communicate with each other more effectively to form greater solidarity, consensus and a more realistic image of youth, and to power progression for our future.
Ayane Tominaga, Christopher Oliver, Chih Chiu, Feng Zhixuan, Guan Danju, I Liang Cheng, Julia Zeng, Kai Lai Chan, Meitao Qu, Ronni Winkler, Tsung-Yao Huang, Uchercie Tang, Wang Qing, Wencun Chen, Yang Shen, Yiming Sun, Yiyun Yan

My good friend Shelly Wyn-de-Bank has just had a joint show there 'Meeting of Minds' with Stan Peach and John Sparks. The crypt was perfect for their work that sat beautifully together, I loved the unique charm each room and corridor has and it was a humbling experience to share it with the residents that are buried there... I hope they approved us all - would love to go back and visit them again very soon

Last night I sat through most amazing play written by Jasmin Mandi-Ghomi. The story of Icarus brought to life by this young play write. This story was set in modern time, telling the story of young refuge in a western country and all the horrific anxieties that he has to deal with. The writer takes her audience through the pain and turmoil that her characters are going through. Amazing play, great acting, well written, directed and produced. WELL DONE-PROUD.
