About The Golden Retriever Pub

"A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for our hearty, seasonal pub-food"

The Golden Retriever Pub Description

There is some speculation regarding the origin of the Golden Retriever, with the original building pre-dating planning legislation. It is believed that the original site was a foresters cottage, dating back before 1841. The building was later developed into dog-kennels (explaining the name 'Golden Retriever'), whilst retaining its traditional farm-house style.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

we reserved a table in advance and everything was set up for us when we arrived... despite it being really busy we were taken straight through to our table and the staff were very efficient and attentive - the food was lovely - really friendly staff, great service and really nice food - well done :)

User

We stopped of here for lunch with our 3 dogs after a walk in Swinley. Had a lovely lunch! Friendly staff, fantastic food, perfect weather! Thank you xx

We had our FuntoSing choir Christmas party at the Golden Retriever Pub. The atmosphere was great and it nice and spacious to house our large group. The food was delicious and presented well. The service was good and the waiting staff very helpful. We all had an enjoyable time and there were no complaints about anything. I would definitely go there again. Well done all involved.

Visited yesterday along with 30 of my family! The roast dinner was amazing and the waitress was so great with us all! I highly recommend the raspberry milkshake cheesecake! It's served with clotted cream and is the best pudding I've ever had!!

User

Had Sunday dinner here yesterday. Honestly THE best Sunday roast I have had out, and possibly even ever!! 3 adults and a child. Adults had the Trio roast (the Trio for Two was a lovely experience) and my very fussy daughter ate more of the roast here then she has ever eaten at home! Was very busy but service was quick considering. Our waitress Serena was lovely. Clearly rushed off her feet but did everything with a smile, which makes a huge difference. If she could see we were waiting for something but couldn't get to us, she would make a point of letting us know we were next. My only teeny tiny gripe, was the fact my daughter couldn't do the activities on her kids menu due to a lack of pencils/crayons. Overall a fantastic place and will 100% be returning! :-)

A real gem of a pub/ restaurant, fantastic beer, wines, and food, and extremely well executed, a rare thing today, deserves to succeed,

What a great meal we've had tonight to celebrate a birthday.

Serena (our waitress) was very attentive, but not intrusively so, and made a fuss of our 9 year old.

Food was delicious. 4 different meals ordered and 4 clean plates!

Service was fab, even though they were really busy (not an empty table). It's good to go somewhere that has plenty of staff to cope with the amount of covers.

Won't be long before we return.

Went for lunch chose the 2 course menu for £12, food Was really nice and great portion sizes. However our waiter needed to pay more attention we had got drinks at the bar before going to a table and when he came over he asked if we wanted drinks whilst listening looking at the menu!! He brought our mains fairly quickly nicely cooked and hot. We finished and waited ages for him to return to clear plates and take dessert order but he never came back. Had to beckon another waitresses attention. His customer service was not great at all he didn’t come back to ask if meals ok ? Nice pub great food lovely roaring fires 🔥 would go back

We like the Golden Retriever, the atmosphere, the fact that it is a cosy comfortable place to go for a meal, and the service. Tonight was no exception. Lamb koftas were tasty though not sure where the tzatziki was, fish ( & chips to die for) sirloin steak cooked to my liking, finishing off with creme brûlée. We could do with “ pensioners portions” but another very pleasant evening. Thankyou

The sun was shining and we sat outside to eat lunch. Ordered a pizza to share from a nice, friendly waitress. Didn't have to wait very long for our order and it was lovely. Only 'complaint' is that the toilets are upstairs so I used the disabled.

User

Nice pub except for the idiot who reversed into our car in the car park in Saturday lunchtime. Luckily somebody has come forward as a witness so the offending driver will be getting contacted very shortly for failing to stop at the scene of an accident. I did phone the pub and left a message to enquire if they had cctv but have not yet had a response.

User

Lovely sunday roast with the family. I had eaten here before a few years ago so I was pleased that the food was still on point

User

Went in Friday for dinner. Disappointed no draught cider and told by bar staff no idea when they'd be getting any. Ordered the pate starter which was tasty but just two very thin pieces of bread which resembled bread sticks. Not impressed with that but enjoyed the main meal.

User

Just got back from, what started out as, a lovely meal in a lovely pub/restaurant. Waitress was attentive, food lovely, setting quant, but at no point were we told we only had 2 hours to eat a 3 course meal before having to vacate the table. I understand this is a popular, busy restaurant, but for someone to randomly come up to us after just 2 hours, before we had even finished our drinks, to be told we had to leave was VERY disappointing. If it had been mentioned before, we would have been more accommodating, but to have to down our drinks (there was no room in the bar area for us to finish our drinks, and cut our conversation abruptly short was a sad sad ending to what started out as a nice meal and catch-up with friends who hadn't seen each other in such a long time. Sad to say, we won't be back

User

Service was so slow, main average apart from undercooked parsnip and roast potatoes dessert was Eton mess which was warm won’t be venturing here again

User

Iv given 2 stars solely to congratulate to lovely and kind staff who looked after our party while I was there however I was very disappointed with my meal. I had the starter of scallops and it cos £8.95, I literally couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the size of the starter, it seemed like 2 scallops that had been quartered and spread out and the slices of black pudding were so so thin that you could see through them it was so poor, next course was fillet Rossini and this was like no Rossini iv ever had, such poor quality, was nothing like normal and again for £23 was rediculously small, the 7oz fillet was very chewy and even my aunt commented on how I was having to saw it up with the steak knife. I was absolutely starving after a long day and literally just stuffed the whole meal down to the disbelief of my family who said I should send the whole thing back but I was hungry so just ate it. Maybe I was just unlucky as everyone else seemed to order hunters chicken which is half the price and looked lovely, I just feel disappointed that what I expected to be great was just terrible ☹️

User

I only had a couple of drinks in the garden, had a visit to the toilets, 😱😱😱 if I’d gone there first I certainly wouldn’t have had a single drink! If that’s the hygiene standards in the toilets, I dread to think what the kitchens might be like!!

User

Unfortunately not a great experience for mothers day today. Won’t be going there again as a result. Food was very average, orders did not come out together, needed to ask twice for the extra cauliflower cheese we were talked into ordering, had to ask for my daughters deserts as they also went missing after they brought out the adults.. my youngest didn’t eat much of her food so we asked them to box it so she could have it later. When it came to leaving we asked for the box, what they gave us was not my child’s food, they through a few scraps in a box far less and not even what she had in the first place, they had obviously thrown it away. Not great at all

User

Sunday ruined....

Table near door which was kept open so you can imagine how cold we were. Waiter was not really bothered about seeing to us and it showed in his attitude. The manger kindly shut the front doors and put the heater above door on but immediately the young waitress who had been listening to our conversation came past and opened the door again smiling snuggly to my partner and I. When I told the manager he said she was laughing at him???? We couldn’t eat our dinner as we were too cold but nothing was taken off the bill and it just seems the young waitress and our waiter let the who place down. We used to go a lot but hadn’t been for awhile now it will be a very long time till we go again if we ever do. Much nicer places to go ...
