Whilst serving during WW1, Bill's Father was saved by a Gurkha, his family have always held a special place in their heart for the Gurkhas for this reason and that is why he chose to raise funds for the The Gurkha Welfare Trust.
As part of his 90th Birthday celebrations Bill asked all his friends and family to donate to the Trust and raised a fantastic £660.
We were delighted to welcome Bill to the Museum today.

A V.C. Action:
Captain Richard Kirby Ridgeway, 8th Gurkha Rifles, India, 22 November 1879
... “For conspicuous gallantry throughout the attack on Konoma (Eastern Frontier of India), on the 22nd November, 1879, more especially in the final assault, when, under a heavy fire from the enemy, he rushed up to a barricade and attempted to tear down the planking surrounding it, to enable him to effect an entrance, in which act he received a very severe rifle shot wound in the left shoulder”. (London Gazette 11 May 1880.)

53 YEARS AGO TODAY
FOR VALOUR - GURKHAS’ MOST RECENT V.C. ACTION
On 21st November 1965, L/Cpl Rambahadur Limbu of 2nd Battalion, 10th Princess Mary’s Own Gurkha Rifles “displayed heroism, self-sacrifice and a devotion to duty and to his men of the very highest order”... “His actions on this day reached a zenith of determined, premeditated valour…” These words record the action in Borneo where L/Cpl Rambahadur Limbu lead an attack on an enemy position and machine gun post. Against intense and accurate fire, which wounded both others in his group, he stormed the position alone and captured the gun. He then manoeuvred in the open and under sustained fire to a more effective position. From here he rushed forward in the open against intense automatic fire to rescue one of the wounded. He did so against overwhelming odds. Having returned safely with the casualty he then went back again, dashing across open ground, to rescue the other casualty showing “complete contempt of the enemy and determination to save the lives of his men”. The whole time he was under continued aimed automatic fire. Having successfully completed this task of rescuing the wounded he continued to engage the enemy until they were routed. For this action he was awarded The Victoria Cross.

On Saturday the 2nd of November the Gurkha Museum hosted the 6th Queen Elizabeth's own Gurkha Rifles AGM and reunion dinner. This followed a service in Winchester Cathedral at the 6GR Book of Remembrance. In particular, tribute was paid to Lt. Hugh Wallace who was killed in action during the Borneo Confrontation in 1963. The family of Hugh Wallace also kindly donated an Elizabeth Cross, a Memorial Scroll and a Pingat Jasa Malaysia (Malaysian Service Medal) to the Museum.

This is a brilliant museum. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and the exhibits are interesting and accessible. For me, it's also a great place for serious research with archives and thousands of images covering the Gurkhas' 202 years of service to the British Crown. Well worth a visit!
