About The Hole In The Wall

Pretty much an institution in these parts - and it's stayed pretty much the same for years - this pub is actually quite a large hole in a wall, being situated in railway arches in front of Waterloo Station and has been a watering hole of choice for commuters for many a year. Never a place one would ever describe as spic and span (picture your favourite grotty boozer), and with conversation drowned out by the trains rumbling over head every few minutes, the appeal of the place is not easy to identify. But when you consider it's proximity to the station and the excellent range of beers on the hand pumps, the penny drops. Not a great place for a romantic tte--tte, but a handy one to put right the evils of another day in the office or kill time while waiting for that train.

Whilst this is a great pub and I have enjoyed drinking there for over 30 years, I am astounded that on the day of the Army v Navy game it did not open till 1100. I arrived with a fellow hungry & thirsty rugby fan at 1000 looking for a bacon butty and a beer. We got a butty from a stall down the road by waited, with about 60 other chaps (including 35 or so Vikings) for over 35 min for the pub to open. The pub could have sold loads of butties and a lot of drink but was closed. Truly a wasted opportunity.

User

Very nice place and thanks sooooo much to the lovely staff members who put my sister's bag of shopping safely behind the bar after she left it behind by accident, she was so happy to get it back! We will definitely visit again! X

User

Top notch establishment. Popped in because I had nearly an hour to wait for a train. Beer is very well priced for London. Managed to neck a couple of pints down while I chatted to the lads behind the bar. Ordered a cheese sandwich with chips, and got a very good snack. I was very tempted to make as my train and wait another hour, but if the Crazy Lady ever found out.....

User

Not the pub it used to be! In the 1980s it was the ultimate man cave full of 'faces' and you needed to watch your back. Now it's got great beer, good service and classic pub grub.

The original exterior is still there and it still looks like a hardened drinkers pub, but you could take your Mother there and eat and drink well, and in peace.

Great time in there had a good crack with the locals

User

User

User

Great place , lovely atmosphere nice beer

User

Fantastic pub and team.

Great atmosphere

User

Excellent pub with nice patio outside for smokers. Good real ales include Youngs and several others. Food good as well. Staff always very friendly. Been going here for twenty years - highly recommend.

User

Very tasty nachos, interesting selection of beer. And a great Belgian bartender. What's not to like?

User

Travel to London through Waterloo and it was always the start of day popping into the hole in the wall, and maybe a tear up outside on match day.

User

The place is Brilliant really, I like places that are different, have character. My real ale was warm but still drinkable. Trains rumbling above, Bonkers but that's brilliant. A beer garden too! Staff nice, customers nice. Hope you have fun when you get there. Weekend's usually chocker blocker :)

User

It's an absolute institution! I've used it as a meeting point on and off for over 30 years. The beer is always good, with a decent choice of quality ales and the atmosphere is great. The noise and vibration from passing trains adds character. It's a bit scruffy but - hey, it's a proper pub!

User

In all we like this pub and enjoy visiting everytime we go to Waterloo. It's always busy and must be hard work for the staff to keep up but, telling a guy at the bar 'I don't give a fuck how long you've been waiting mate you can see we are fucking busy' isn't acceptable. Maybe counting to 10 doesn't apply anymore. Change of job for that barman I'd say.

User

Great wee pub hidden under the arches at Waterloo.. . Has a beer and fish and chips after rememberance on Sunday... was made really welcome.. and had to laugh at the staff putting on poppies once the veterans started to appear x

User

Its a big pub that you go to drink in and watch football on the telly before you go to Twickenham. Its a real drinking house with no frills that you go to for a drink and a chat with your mates. Its location is brilliant for Waterloo station as its about 300 yards from the entrance.

I cannot comment on the food as I never ate there.

The male toilets are typical drinking pub toilets..functional.

“Pint of Guinness please”

“That’s £4.55”

I present card

“Minimum £5 I’m afraid”

“Have you got anything for 45p?”

“No”

“Can you take £5 and give me change?”

“No”

“You can charge me a fiver, it’s fine”

“No I can’t, it’ll put my till out”

My thirst disappeared.

An incredible example of ridiculous policy. A pub that doesn’t want to sell beer.

User

Always was a crap boozer - when Waterloo was down and out city it was "rough..." Fine as beer was cheap.

Today it treats its customers like it was still the 80's... beer is no longer cheap so It's simply not acceptable to serve someone a drink and 10mins later start clearing furniture around them.

Worse still inside of the published hours start being aggressive about drinking up!

As a paying customer I rightly object to being talked to like a annoyance.

Sorry but pubs like this deserve to go out of business...
