What brilliant shots of the TfL event for #IETOpenHouse! Young people tried the train driving simulator and got to check out the brand new Elizabeth Line depot. This exciting event gave young people an insight into the variety of careers available to them at TfL. A great event with fantastic feedback!

#MondayMotivation: The young people that attended #IETOpenHouse had some fantastic, motivational words about engineering at the end of the day. 16 year old Daniel said: "A career in engineering would be so interesting and you would always be doing something exciting!"
Another person who attended said: "Today showed a whole new world to look forward to. Technology will surely lead the way to improving the lives of people less fortunate." #missionaccomplished

To mark #IETOpenHouse, we conducted some research and found that those who’ve pursued STEM in their education or career earn more, get on the property ladder quicker and save more than those who haven’t pursued STEM subjects! Don’t believe us? Then take a look at our research in more depth here > http://ow.ly/hRev30leGF9

More than one in 10 girls think that STEM careers are more suited for boys. In modern society, it’s important to disregard stereotypes. #SmashStereotypesToBits #INWED18

There is a wireless telephone bug .This has been caught by my bug detector. Active on the frequency 400 kilo Hertz. Other people also have verified this.

This needs to be stopped immediately .

One of the best platforms for engineers to gain an infinite ken on their respective field and also can disseminate their ken to others.

Lovely building, beautifully elegant inside. We were given a luxurious dining area with fabulous views over the Thames. It boasts a large, decked terrace which was the perfect place to be with a glass of bubbles and an amazing view of the New Years firework display. Magical!

User

Love this place!!! Great place to sit and enjoy a conversation with fellow engineers.

It's been ages since I last visited the IEE at Savoy Place.

Prof Ian Stewart, eminent Mathematician, writer and teacher at my alma mater. Warwick University presented a lecture on Catastrophe Theory. The packed theatre attracted alumni from the 60s through to current times.

In an absorbing lecture, Prof Stewart reminded us of the travails that some disciplines go through. After a fanfare start, the subject had gone "underground". But, the ideas it spawned from the times or Thom and Zeeman (also Warwick) have morphed and survived to become Stability Theory with applications in areas as diverse as fluid flow, mathematical biology and even markets!

The evening's lecture was much appreciated and we got to meet long lost friends from times gone by and also made new friends.

Great show, IEE and Warwick Mathematics department.

Great venue in a prime location , great staff and the view from the balcony at night is great

User

Great venue for meetings & conference. I attended the Institution of Engineering and Technology registration and standards conference at Savoy house and I must admit it’s one of the best venues with great history.

User

Great Institution that I’ve been a member of since it was created from merger of various others. The Savoy Place venue is excellent too. I’m proud to be a member and Professional Review Interviewer for IEng applicants.

User

Excellent visit and a great opportunity to mingle and network with like minded industry professionals

User

Beautiful building in a special location. Loved the statues, busts and background information on famous engineers. Great place to bring aspiring young engineers.

User

Attended the Telegraph Cyber Security conference here. Good venue for listening to speakers, great food and an amazing roof terrace for an end of event drinks reception (helped by glorious sunshine!)

User

A very special Arkwright Award ceremony yesterday for talented young engineers.Thank you for your kind hospitality and for making us all feel so welcome.

User

A fascinating lecture with two excellent speakers. As so often with these 'specialist' lectures, they managed to make a serious subject both interesting, and ta times even amusing, thus appealing to a wide audience.

Lack resource to be a multidisciplinary engineering institute and are doing nothing to address this. I recently applied for chartership and they struggled to locate competent engineers in asset engineering or water engineering. My assessors were clearly out of their dept and knew nothing about the design and construction of water mains. I had to explain what a DMA and HDZ was, they had never heard of sizing a pipe to peak summer demand. Immediately i filed a complaint with them the locked my forum in the engineering community and submitted the complaint to their legal department instead of investigating their inability to fairly assess CEng candidates that aren't in the electrical, mechanical and IT field. My advice is they review their charter and stop identifying themselves as multidisciplinary until they have adequate volunteering resources to fairly assess CEng applicants. They need to remember that these are peoples career and any professional review interviewer should at least have had prior work experience, theoretical and practical knowledge and familiarity with the terminology of that engineering field. People want to join IET not because they are an easy way to get chartered or because they are a soft touch but because it was supposed to be a platform that unites engineering and technological fields of studies. I have worked with electrical, mechanical, production, chemical, water and civil engineers in the same company. Most engineering firms these day are multidisciplinary, it is ok for IET to offer membership to us but to offer a route to chartership unless you have the resources to fair assess engineers from other fields of engineering.
