The Mead Centre, Newport Pagnell Description

The Mead Centre will be a unique space at the centre of Newport Pagnell managed by Newport Pagnell United Reformed Church, community representatives and users of the space.

Our state of the art, multipurpose, accessible building will be a welcoming space for individuals, clubs, families, businesses and other groups to build community and find a sense of belonging.

The vision for the Mead Centre is to be a place of community in which to meet, celebrate, learn, grow, share and make a difference, making it possible to transform lives and enrich society.

Our desire is for the Mead Centre to be accessible to everyone in the community, raising awareness, understanding and active participation. It will be vibrant, joyful, adaptable and spontaneous; it will be shaped by those who use it.

The Mead Centre is named after Gordon and Glenys Mead, NPURC Church members who left a legacy which started the fund for a new building. They were a local couple who believed in community and cared deeply about bringing people together.

The Mead Centre, with a large hall, four meeting rooms, a sensory room, two differently sized kitchens and other facilities, will be a great resource, in the centre of Newport Pagnell, for an even wider range of community groups and activities. The building will incorporate the most up-to-date building methods and materials, will be environmentally efficient with regard to heating and water recycling and should cost no more to run than the present hall. Unlike the present hall the building will be able to be used by several groups at the same time and will have two storeys at one end with access to all parts for people with disabilities.

Building work has begun in March 2020 and later this year phase 1 will end and we will have a watertight shell. Phase 2 is to fit it out and we need to raise another £500, 000 to finish it. We URGENTLY need your support if the work is to continue.

We are seeking help and support from the local community, from trusts and businesses to assist us to reach the target so that we can finish the building and provide an asset for the town as a whole – a place where people can come together, find a welcome, tackle isolation and both give and receive support in our community building where we are community building!

Following our presence at the Carnival, we are now focusing on the planning and next steps in the work to demolish the current building. We still have a lot of money to raise but are in conversation with the East Midlands Synod and the national United Reformed Church so that we ensure we can go ahead with some financial safety nets in place. Once we start building there are other grant funding bodies we can access and when we are nearly finished there are other organizations... we can apply to, but we need to be sure we have support so that when we begin we can also finish the job! Currently we have some generous regular donations coming in and we would like to see these boosted so we can go back to those making decisions about supporting us and let them know we have £1000 per month coming in on Standing Orders. At our recent Gift Day we have some new people sign up to support this. Is it something you could do? Maybe £5 or £10 per month until the hall is built (or for a specified term)? If so, please get in touch with revdjmills@btinternet.com and I will give you the relevant bank details. Alternatively you may want to donate a specific sum for a specific purpose? Please get in touch and we can let you know what is possible. This building has so many possibilities for the town and for community building. Can you help us realise this vision and provide a space for future generations, right in the centre of the town? Thanks.

Thank you to everyone who came today. We raised money, fed people, developed ideas, told people about the vision for the Mead Centre and wore out a large number of children!! We welcomed the Mayor and Lady Mayor- who enjoyed the refreshments and the bouncy castle too! We raised £330 and got some new donations, offers of regular Standing Orders and a number of collecting tins returned. Thank you to all who helped to make this possible!

We're beneficiaries of the Coop Local Cause scheme and currently the total stands at £1786.90. This has been raised by local people choosing the Mead Centre as their Local Cause on www.coop.co.uk/membership and registering for their 1% to go help us with this Community Building. Can you register too please and help us? AND if you're interested in helping us raise more money or just to find out more, come along to the Gift Day on Saturday 23rd June from 10am- 3pm. All sorts going on including a bouncy castle and refreshments. And you can find out more about how to help us. This is the year we begin the work on demolishing the old building and starting the work to rebuild, can you help us- all help welcomed- to get closer to the total needed? Please share.

On 6th May we announced we'd reached £505,000 in our fundraising effort to build the Mead Centre. 22 days later and we can announce we now have £510,000! This total was helped by our continuing regular monthly donations from people who believe in this project, the Old Time Music Hall and some generous 'one off' local donations including £500 from our friends at NP Baptist Church. Come and see us in the old hall on Saturday 9th June (NP Vintage Weekend) when we'll have a boun...cy castle and bacon rolls. And again on 23rd June for our Gift Day- and find out how easy it is signing up to give a regular donation to help with this Community Building. We'll also be at the Strawberry Fair on 17th June and the Carnival on 7th and 8th July. We'll be sharing more about this project AND raising funds. Because this is the year we knock down the old hall and begin the transformation!!
